COMEBACK!!!??? So I am on my way home from seeing a movie and I am listening to the radio....and what do I hear. Step by Step by the New Kids on the Block.....and it is a new recording too, the voices are dramatically different from what I remember when my brother collected their music. |

German Piracy Not a criticism or anything, just a new drink related to the Caribbean Reef. I ought to do a whole series of these.
Highball glass of limeaid Ice 1/2 shot coconut rum 1/2 shot banana rum 1/4 shot of Jagermeister 1/4 shot of Creme de Menthe 1/4 shot of Blue Curacao 1/4 shot of Triple Sec
It works quite well, though you need the very small amounts of Jagermeister and Creme de Menthe else they would overpower the drink. |

Happyness is continual charity So I am infatuated with Kiva, microloans which let people put out loans for people in third world countries. You pay money for credit and when repaid, the repayment turns back into credit which may be pulled out if you wish. It means that I can loan to some people and once a loan is repaid, loan out that same money at no additional cost to myself. Everyone benefits and I manage to help people. They just changed how the repayment worked. You used to have to wait until the loan was repaid in full before the credit was given but they changed it to be real time. It meant that I was able to reloan $75 tonight which puts a smile on my face. Current Mood: chipper |

Spending the money So I have been spending like a fool today. Bought a bus pass + pic for September, got 2 three-drawer dressers for dirt cheap, bought Unhallowed Metropolis due the the game I am playing in and purchased Hunter: the Vigil. All in all, I spent a great deal of money but it ought to be useful. The dressers for instance were 30$ cheaper each and I had already been planning on buying them for my move out.
Oh well, hopefully tomorrow will be less expensive. |

This year's Book Festival is going to be LEGEN-(wait for it, and I hope you're not lactose-intoleran http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/08/this-years-book-festival-is-going-to-be.html posted by Dan Guy
Leila writes: Dan posted that the signing in DC will take place at 1pm - I know that the LoC event itself is free, but do those of us who want something signed have to bring or have anything besides a book (or stack of them)? To which Mr. G waxes: This is so mysterious. What kind of thing could people have or bring apart from books? Perhaps owl feathers in their hatbands, or black orchids in their buttonholes?
Anyway. No, they should just come. And by special permission of Harper Collins there will be copies of The Graveyard Book available that day only. And to which I will only add: You do realize that you all need to show up with owl feathers in your hatbands or black orchids in your buttonholes now, right? UPDATE: In fact, thanks to the generosity of a fan, the first twenty-odd of you that she sees so attired will receive a free copy of the UK edition of ODD AND THE FROST GIANTS, not yet published in the US. FURTHER UPDATE: As I tapped the above last night, I thought to myself, Wait, it's illegal to possess the parts of most migratory and predatory birds, unless you are a member of a recognized Native American tribe using them for religious ritual, isn't it? I should confirm that before Birdchick has to school me...And then I promptly forgot about it until this morning, at which point I did look it up and confirmed that: "The Federal Migratory Bird Act states that most birds and their parts (feathers, eggs, nests, etc.) are protected by federal law from being killed, taken, transports, possessed, bought, sold, imported or exported without a valid federal permit."So all of you non-Native Americans need to stick to black orchids in your bottonholes or, at the very most, faux owl feathers in your hatbands, okay? Or just pick up the first pigeon feather you find on the ground and stick it in your hat -- the Mall is full of them. Mr. G will probably know the difference, but I bet he's too nice to call anyone out on it.
- Mr. G will be appearing at a fundraiser for the Open Rights Group on 24th October. The details are all on their site. They're charging 5 pounds to existing members, 10 pounds to the general public, and it's completely free to anyone who signs up to become a regular supporter of ORG between now and the event's date. Sounds like a good reason to support a good cause!
- Lucy helpfully writes to point out that details for the Manchester stop of THE GRAVEYARD BOOK UK Tour have now been posted.
- Details about the Scotland stop on THE GRAVEYARD BOOK UK Tour have been posted.
- UltimateDisney.com has up a nice interview with Henry Selick about NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and CORALINE.
The RoboPanda was delivered at last, though its arrival was not without incident. Without further ado, I give you: The Arrival of the RoboPandaor, good fences make good neighbors but good umbrellas make better bludgeonsWhen I arrived home this evening, I discovered two ragamuffins, of the sort increasingly infesting this once-fine borough, loitering by a large package on my stoop. As I drew closer, their eyes seemed to alight with a sort of nervous hope. "I always wanted a panda," whispered the little matchstick girl. I recoiled; for a moment my confusion overwhelmed my revulsion. How could she know what was within? The answer was quickly revealed, and did not please me. Of all the meddlesome knavery! I brandished my umbrella and shook it vigorously at them in chastisement. Choice words were uttered then, you have my word on that! They fled, and I briefly pursued them. Having chased them off, I retired to my study to survey the damage. Thankfully, the shipment within was unmarred by their grubby little trespasses. How fortunate that I happened to have with me an acquaintance who is a professional photographer to capture the entire saga!

Bachelor Mage Playtest Oneshot Extravaganza! So, Kerry's going to be out of town for a week, making me a temporary bachelor. What better way to celebrate than gaming! I'm going to run a playtest for some rather extensive changes to the Mage the Ascension rules on Saturday, September 6. Time would go from the afternoon (starting no latter than 4pm) and ending when people are done playing. You can certainly show up earlier if you want though, just give me a heads up if it's like before noon or something. Also foodage of some sort will be cooked here (so I guess it's not entirely like I'm a bachelor again). No familiarity with Mage is required, as the house rules have completely revamped the magic rules anyway. Who wants to play (yes, haha, you live in Ohio/Toronto/Edmonton. Very funny.)? |

Nugget Hops! Last year was a disappointment for hop growing, but this season we were blessed with a single very active hop vine that produced some HUGE hops! Michael cut it down this afternoon:
Maybe making some beer this weekend?
EDIT: This is more hops than we’ve ever gotten from 3 vines, just from one! Michael just brought me this photo:

Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland, PA Anyone who has been reading my blog of late knows I’ve been doing the local touristy thing this year. My latest conquest? Coal Mines.
I knew Pennsylvania was a big coal state, but didn’t really think about the fact that there would be retired coal mines open for tours to the public, and was only clued into their existence by a Radio Times broadcast on July 2nd about fun things to do on less than one tank of gas in eastern Pennsylvania.
The drive up to Pioneer Tunnel took a little under 2 hours, and was a pleasant drive the whole way. We arrived to the surprise of an entire Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine Pioneer Day festival being in full swing! Parking was a bit tricky, but once we found some we walked up toward the festival, got our combo tickets for train and coal rides, and hopped on a train.
If not for the completeness of experience factor I’d say skip the train ride. It’s a very short ride, was crowded (ok, maybe that was partially due to the festival!) and probably the least exciting part of the day. But it was nice seeing the top of what the strip mining operation did, and learning about the history of the area and nearby Centralia, where a coal fire has been burning for over 40 years under the town, that was pretty fascinating.
…the view was nothing to sneeze at either, and the weather was amazing. Oh and Michael snapped a photo of me on the train that I not only don’t loathe - I actually Like! Score!
After the outdoor train ride, it was onto the carts for a trip down into the coal mine! Once inside we were in for quite a treat, a fantastic tour where, among other things we got to see a portion of a petrified tree - most of which was removed for display in the Smithsonian.
And what coal mine tour is complete without some explosives and a canary?
A shot of Michael standing in front of the huge pile of equipment the miners were expected to haul up the shafts with them each day, and a photo of one of the still-working escape shafts - yikes!
In all, the tour was well worth the ticket price and the drive all the way up to Ashland - even if there isn’t much else up there.
Back up topside the festival was winding down by around 5PM. I snagged some of the last Funnel Cake of the day, yum yum!
..but what is that down the hill? Michael spotted them before I did…
LLAMAS!!! Aaaah :) I love llamas, they were available for petting!
Also, some cute goats :)
The last stop on our adventure for the weekend? Yuengling Brewery. It was unplanned, there is no brewpub (boo!), we knew they would be closed for tours by that time of the day, but we were in the area and decided to swing by to snap a photo before heading home. To be honest, Yuengling is sorta my slumming beer, I’ll go for a Black and Tan if nothing else reasonable is on the menu, or their Lager in a real social pinch, but it is a famous brewery with all kinds of history, so it’s worth a real visit at some point.
That weekend I also finally got to meet Nick and Karen over at Sly Fox in Phoenixville. It was cool to finally meet up - hurrah for more friends in the area!
What are my grand plans for the long Labor Day weekend? Well, I’m on call and have to work for a couple hours on Sunday(!). But our friend Ian is in town for the weekend! So we’ll be hanging out, probably have a fire outside. Shooting for a pretty mellow holiday weekend. Michael took a few days off of work this week too, so I think talked him into taking some of recipes I marked in Eating Well and giving them a go. Yum. Oh and I think I’ll get some sleep too, haven’t been doing that enough lately. |

Language classes So, ashiikankwe and I were out for a picnic at the parc on the east side of the mountain the other day. On our way back to the Metro I noticed this place: http://www.collegeplaton.com/english/localfees.htmThey offer classes in Slovene! Which is good, as I'm getting frustrated with my book, and we're heading to Sveta Ana (I'm fairly sure that's where we're going) in November. So I could take a short course to help get me to a level that's easier to sustain than my current "Dobro jutro, ime mi je..." level of things. They also offer French classes of course, so C- and I may sign up for those as well. Mostly because we're having trouble motivating ourselves to learn it. Why isn't German the dominant language in Quebec? I like it so much more. Anyways. For people who've taken language classes in the past, do those rates look reasonable? I'm going to take the Slovene class regardless, as I haven't seen anywhere else offering courses in it in Montreal. I think that's all at the moment. I should do a real up date when I get back home. I sit on a Board of Directors and I'm the head of the IT committee. Yesterday I got an urgent phone call because while the office manager was away on extended leave, the ED (with good intentions) allowed a volunteer to update the website. Somehow, the volunteer managed to wipe all the content (including the template data) from the welcome page and essentially broke the website. I went in, managed to recover the page from the google cache because no backup had been saved, and then had to find where to upload it on my own. If there were an instruction manual and backups, this wouldn't have been hard, but since I wasn't given anything to work with, I'm quite impressed with myself. |

My work finally online Hey Guys, I've been around this group for awhile now. I even moderated for sometime. But now I am done with film school. Just graduated and now am off to the big bad world of filmmaking. I plan to take the year off and work on my own creative stuff and in the meantime take gigs and do production work when I can. I can say it's an uncertain, worrisome time now that school is over.
Anyhow, my last year at school I worked on a thesis film I would like all of you to check out. You can see it here at my website among my directors reel and other clips from short films I worked on. Here's the address:
www.jaydrose.com
Good luck as you enter and exit film school. Any feedback on any particular clip is wanted and appreciated. |
