Sarah Palin [29 Aug 2008|10:31am]

Wow I am so excited. She's totally awesome. Judi and I ran into her at the state fair 2 years ago!

What an interesting move. A strong woman who isn't near as divisive or abrasive as hillary. Putting the woman vote in play. He'll take alaska now, too, of course, for what it's worth - not that any democrat has ever taken it, but Barack was running close. That's over now. Not that we have any electoral votes.

You can, and I'm sure people will, nitpick over this policy or that, but she's really an amazing individual. Yay for Sarah!

I just overheard two women in airport (I'm in SFO) talk about her "Who's Sarah Palin?" And I cannot comprehend how much more famous she must be today than yesterday.

Sara + Hasselblad, originally uploaded by Sid.Ceaser.

Sara and I took a lovely drive to Pitcher Mountain this week for a short hike and some blueberry picking. The mountain was much smaller than we both expected, which saved us much huffing and puffing to the top. The view however, was still gorgeous, and I simply must get back there many more times in the future because of the view and how un-visited it was (the entire time we were at the top, nobody else was there).

While I was there, I took some shots of Sara and her new Hasselblad that she got for her birthday. I used it as a chance to get a little more exercise learning how to balance small portable strobe light, in this case a Canon 580EX flash, with the ambient light behind the subject.

Directly at the top of the mountain is a lookout tower, and the sun hit the top of the mountain in just the right way that there was a small shaded patch for us to rest our gear and chill for a few. I set up the flash and the portable umbrella up by clamping the unit to the side of the tower and placed Sara directly in the shadow.

I've discovered what a challenge it is learning new ways of doing something. I have been shooting in my studio for so long, that I became blinded by anything else when it came to shooting outside. I wasn't considering factors that usually I don't have to deal with in a controlled studio environment.

I'm very happy with the resulting image above. I think it came out very well; the colors are nice, the subject is illuminated brightly and clear, and the overall image is a well rounded, well exposed portrait.

An alternate version can be found below and on my Flickr page:

Sara + Hasselblad

Here is a very simple visual to show the difference between ambient light and using something like a strobe flash, and how something so simple as a tiny portable strobe can alter the image in dramatic ways:

(L) natural existing light. (R) ambient light balanced with a Canon 580EX at 1/2 power inside an UmbrelSoft shoot-through Umbrella.

Now that the weather is getting cooler and the days are getting shorter, I look forward to shooting outside more.

Hi!  I'm new to this community, though not to being 5'8" haha (or to EDs.  I'm 23 and a decade into this bullshit)

cw: 132ish

This seems like a sleepy community, but I'd really like to see it perk up!

first day of work! [19 Aug 2008|09:13pm]

chokeberry
it was opening day today. holy cow, jeez louise, etc. people have already written nasty reviews of us on the interweb. ON THE FIRST DAY. blah blah blah, disorganized, cry sniffle, took too long to get my food, whine whine, staff wasn't perfect, I am a jerkface who has nothing better to do than to complain about a place on opening day.
we do have a SERIOUS problem though... the natural way the line forms doesn't really work and arrives at the register from two different directions. also people want to order their shit and THEN get rung up, which makes sense and is what I think most people are used to, but they want us to have everything go through the computer first. we have two stations behind the counter also (register/coffee and the mezze bar) and the mezze person is NOT SUPPOSED to do anything else, even if there aren't any orders up. I kept getting in trouble today because I was trying to help the other person with their shit cos I wasn't doing anything, and also people wanted to order from me because I was closer to the door and I had to send them around to the register person. and people thought I was just ignoring them or being an asshole or lazy but by the end of the day I was positively twitching from being told not to help them.

but it's the first damn day! shit will get better. I hope.
