Daydreams and Music

Sometimes, while I'm listening to music (particularly music I REALLY like, like Linkin Park or Metallica), I start to have a daydream in time with the music. This happens a lot when I'm on a plane, on a bus, a train, or whenever else I'm killing time.

Sometimes these daydreams a REAL weird, but they all have a really similar theme: martial arts. These too can vary from the mundane to the ridiculous. And of course, because they're daydreams, I am some kind of undefeatable superhero, bashing skulls and taking names like Jet Li in some crazy kung fu movie.

Example: Underworld's track, "Born Slippy," has always somehow brought up this image in my mind of some huge tournament. As the song plays in my ears, in my daydream I'm going through some sequence of fights, eventually culminating in my victory and a cheering crowd.

For those of you in the cheap seats, Born Slippy is an 8 minute track. 8 minutes is REAL long for your typical MA match. I'd be lucky to last 3 and still be able to perform in real life, much less win anything.

But I digress. My point is, I still have these daydreams, but now, they don't end in ultimate victory or whatever like in the movies. Sometimes I lose. Sometimes I lose and come back to win. Sometimes I don't.

In my most recent, inspired by two tracks from Reanimation (a Linkin Park various artists remix album), I find in my "daydream," I am first paired against my best friend and sparring partner for the entertainment of those around us, who want some kind of good "show," like UFC or Pride or K-1 or something. The daydream ends with he and I agreeing to give them a "good show," and then engaging after the first bell...but then nothing. The song and the daydream end there. This is a good thing, since I'm hardly interested in beating up (or getting beat up by) my best friend.

In another sequence, we (who? I don't know...a bunch of my MA brothers and such) are all on some vacation to a Japanese inn somewhere in Japan (Kyushu, I think, since it's real warm and the beaches are nice), but again, it's not just my best friend and I, but several other of our MA buddies, along with...um...well, several girls. All in one big room.

Nothing crazy, mind you! Everyone is dressed, everyone has their own futon, and everyone is just sleeping. That's it. No funny business.

But the point is, as the song progresses, I wake up.... and I notice it's real early. Dawn. And I am about the only person up in the room. So I go outside to stretch a bit and start training. One by one, my MA brothers start to join me, training down by the beach, starting with my best friend.

As the song (and the daydream) progress in my head, the "camera" if you will goes back to the room, where now only the girls are left snoring on the futons. One wakes up, notices that all the guys are gone. She gets mildly alarmed, slides the shoji screen aside, and sees all of us down on the beach from the window of our room, overlooking the surf, practicing in the early morning sun and sea breeze.

Not long after that, we conclude and walk back up to get some breakfast. We continue through our day, eventually settling on an outdoor bar that night for some more celebration before we all head back to our hectic lives in Tokyo. But, because I am me and this is a daydream, drunken stupid us can't avoid getting into some ridiculous bar brawl (in front of the ladies, no less...noticing a pattern here?), but of course we trounce everyone and high tail it out of there before the law shows up to toss us in the hoosegow for runnin' moon---wait, that's something else.

Uh...anyway, yeah. There you have it. Random thoughts before I retire. Enjoy.

...does anyone else have these kinds of daydreams?

Ganked from Cubby, ganker of others himself...the Random Interest Sampling meme:

Look at your LJ "interests" list. If you have fewer than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much.

books: I like to read, what can I say? As Peter once famously remarked, "I can sit down and read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in print and be just fine. Put it onto a computer screen and my patience somehow goes down to somewhere between little and none."

computers: it's all the spinning and whirring, I think...just...hypnotic, somehow. computers and I get along pretty well most of the time.

games: I like games so much they're my job! Well...translating stuff about games, anyway. They're just fun! duh!

girls: love 'em or...er...love 'em, 'cause there sure ain't any leavin' 'em. (^^

japanese: beautiful language. having both English and Japanese at my disposal makes expressing both the infinite and the finite easy. chinese is next.

japanese girls: cream of the crop. kind, beautiful, smart, excellent fashion sense, VERY patient...and very, very good.

...uh...games in Japanese with Japanese girls: the trifecta!!

kung fu: this is for the me time. I've not yet found a better way to take care of my body.

movies: my first love...there's just something wonderful about watching a movie...be it at home alone, MST3K'ing with friends at a party, or on a date in a theater...if there's a movie on, I'm watching it. unless it sucks. then I'm playing some games.
