Bio
Barnabas Collins is a 212 year old vampire (played by Jonathan Frid on the ABC-TV Cult Television Gothic Horror-Romance serial Dark Shadows 1966-71; by Ben Cross on the 1991 NBC Dark Shadows Revival series' by Alec Newman for the recent 2004 The WB - Dark Shadows Pilot; and 2006-present by voice actor Andrew Collins on the Dark Shadows Reborn audio drama's).

Barnabas Collins is a six foot tall (give or take an inch) handsome young gentleman. He is tall and dark-haired, with sensative hazel eyes that can easily charm just about any women who looks upon them. Is more like a regal British gentleman, than an American. Is a highly educated, wealthy man of culture and class, that is very lordly in his bearing. He is courteous to all, always giving off an air of confidence and self-assuredness that most men lack.

Barnabas was born into a wealthy and powerful New England family that had made their fortune in the shipping industry. He lived ca. 1795 at Collinwood, near the small fishing village of Collinsport, Maine; when as a mortal he was supposed to marry Josette duPres, despite having a last second fling with Angelique. Angelique wanted Barnabas for herself, so refused to allow Josette to marry him. Unknown to anyone, Angelique (Josette's personal maidservant) was a powerful evil witch, whom via dark, evil magick made Josette fall in love with Barnabas Uncle Jeremiah Collins (played by Anthony George on original series, and Adrian Paul in the 1991 Revival series). Barnabas and Jeremiah fought a dual. Jeremiah lost said duel, but Josette still under the love spell didn't love Barnabas.

While Josette was mourning the loss of her husband. Angelique used her witchcraft to make Barnabas little sister Sarah Collins gravely ill. Then said she would save Sarah's life if he would marry her. When Sarah got better, Barnabas kept his word and married Angelique.

When Barnabas finally found out that Angeleque was the evil witch behind all his families misfortunes, he shot her. Thinking she was about to die, Angelique took revenge on Barnabas by summoning a hexed vampire bat to bite him. When that was accomplished, Barnabas became a vampire. She cursed him to be a creature of the night for all eternity, and to never know love, least it destroy the one foolish enough to love him. However, Angelique recovered from the gun shot wound. Unfortunately, her own curse backfired, since part of her curse was that anyone who loved Barnabas would die. She loved him more than anyone else. So, when Barnabas arose as a vampire, Angelique was the first loved one to die at his hands. Barnabas then found his beloved Josette, and put her under his vampiric thrall. But, Angelique was so powerful, her spirit transcended death, she haunted Josette, showing her horible images of what she would be like as a blood thirtsy fiend. The visions was false however, because Barnabas loved Josette too much to ever sire her. But Josette didn't know this, and jumped off of Widow's Hill, in an act of suicide to avoid becoming what her true love had become.

It was after this that Barnabas wanted to be destroyed. He begged his father Joshua Collins to end his misery. Yet, neither his father, nor trusted servant Ben Stokes could bring themself to destroy Barnabas. Instead, they chained him in a coffin, interred him in a hidden room of the Collins mausoleum at the Eagle Hill Cemetery, where he stayed til the 20th century.

In 1967, a petty thief named Willie Loomis, was looking to find some hidden treasure that the Collins family alledgely had buried with them. But while searching for hidden treasure, he instead found the coffin in which Barnabas was interred, and inadvertantly opened the coffin whilst marvelling at the heavy amount of security involved and was instantly enthralled by the vampiric power of Barnabas Collins. Thus becoming Barnabas loyal servant from that time onward.

After spending 172 years in a chained coffin, in total darkness, with only his waking dreams and nightmares of the tragic events of his life, and loss of his beloved Josette, Barnabas was constantly longing for his eternal love Josette.

Josette, was a ghost that haunted the old house, and sometimes possessed certain ladies that looked like her. Barnabas found various women that he believed was reincarnated versions of Josette over the centuries, such as Maggie Evans in the present, and Lady Hampshire aka Kitty Soames in 1897.

He would on ocassion find a cure for his vampire curse. First thanks to Dr. Lang, and his Frankenstein like creation Adam. Then thanks to Dr. Julia Hoffman, whom was a loyal friend, and whom secretly loved him. However, Angelique refused to stay dead, and always returned to prevent him from ever living happily ever after with anyone other than her. They had a love hate relationship over the centuries. Forever linked by the curse, and forever unable to come to terms with their true feelings.

As the original series ended, Barnabas was in 1971 when he, Dr. Julia Hoffman, and Prof. Stokes had just returned from a successful magic enabled excursion to 1840.

Ironically, when both Barnabas and Angelique was back in time, in the year 1840, Barnabas had finally forgiven Angelique, as both worked to save the first Quentin Collins, and the future of the Collins Family. They had finally realized how much they loved each other, only for Angelique to be murdered by gun shot, and die in his arms one last time.

When he's not wandering the world, or traveling through time, or going to different dimensions to fix his families problems; he returns on occasion to his beloved Old House on the Collinwood estate, which is the only place he feels at peace.

He is cursed to live forever, to lose all he loves, and to never know true peace. Barnabas Collins is a character marked by his duality. At once callous and compassionate, lonely and furtive, his greatest conflict is with the darker forces his curse unleashes, and the struggle to maintain his humanity in spite of them.

Released from the eternal imprisonment of a chained coffin in the 20th century. Pretending to be a British descendent of the original Barnabas Collins, he acquaints himself with descendents of his family, beginning a journey towards personal redemption. He remains fiercely protective of his surrogate family, and forever haunted by the dark shadows his curse casts over the lives of all who cross his path.

The author of all 33 Dark Shadows novels published between 1966-72, Marilyn Ross once said, "I saw Barnabas Collins as a romantic and courageous hero who was touching lives, correcting wrongs, and solving murders through the centuries."
