If I Ever Lose This Heaven

It was in 1998, I was with my cousins and cousin-in-laws from Iran. There was a band on stage right after the fireworks. A session band called Cast Members. They played 70s dance music and plenty of Earth, Wind & Fire songs. They played very well. All fill-ins and all bass lines spot on. It was raining. And it was crowded. And we were all dancing. It was an amazing feeling!

I'd like to go see Enchanted Kingdom, again. But I may not be so lucky this time with catching a good session band, these days. Songs of today have too much "boots wit teh furrr", totally devoid of soul.

Many of today's music are only heard... but nobody really listens.

The other day, I was listening to the 1974 original "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" by Leon Ware and Quincy Jones. The song also featured Al Jarreu and the late Minnie Riperton. It had a mellow but consistent beat with plenty of room for the listener to feel the message of the whole composition. Even the vocals tend to be subordinates instead of upstaging the rest of the music. It is a song meant to be more than just heard on the radio. It's soul food. It makes you want to close your eyes and smile at the vacillating intensity of emotions.

Later versions of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" by other artists tend to be more upbeat and compromising to the listener's experience. At worst, the remakes are mere head-bobbing grooves. The version by Average White Band is forgivable because it was obviously the jaw-dropping syncopation that was the emphasis. Drum and bass coming in pleasant surprises. I am left to wonder how the rest of the instruments sounded so damn sexy and sharp at the same time. Such is the secret of soul music. Things about soul tend to be better when left unsaid.

Don't miss out on this "heaven" of a song. I encourage you to listen, sit back and enjoy the smoothness of this extraordinary music.

+

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

I'm rather picky with Coldplay's music. "Clocks" and "The Scientist" sounded too depressing for me. You know, the speed of sound may be slower than the speed of light; either way, it's still fast. Maybe that's why I didn't even notice any song from their "X&Y" album. I thought Coldplay was turning into a ho-hum band.

One day, an officemate (Sir Natz or Sir Vaj?) went on youtube and showed the rest of us a video clip of Coldplay's latest single "Viva La Vida". It sounded good. And by "good", I mean really good. There was no need to see the music video. The song stood out by itself. There was a familiar feel to the melodies. The opening notes felt like a sneak peek from a past diary downpour, yet everything about the song was new.

Being an oldies afficionado, I can be ruthless when it comes to new music (Sitti is still a boo-boo for me... ugh!). But Coldplay's latest attempts has won me over. Despite my apathy for the band, this is the first time that I enjoyed an entire album by Coldplay.

Later, I did some research and the main denominator for my listening pleasure came up with one name: Brian Eno.

Now, I understand the majority of pseudo-intellectuals just love to name-drop Brian Eno. I don't know why these people do it, but it happens. And I hate these people. They think Japan is the be-all end-all world of sci-fi and pretty 20-something boys/girls that look like 12 year-olds. And they also tend to rave on and on about Batman with the mistaken understanding that Batman is a Marvel superhero. They can't even tell DC from Marvel! Meh.

I digress.

From my own experience, I only know about Brian Eno as the genius-producer behind the best albums by U2. No wonder the tracks from "Viva..." had a familiar air. Even the opening notes of the first track carried a hint of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name". And I love it!

Without further delay, here is my review of the new-familiar individual tracks from "Viva La Vida":

1.) "Life in Technicolor" = Nice prologue! Great appetizer! U2 derivative!

2.) "Cemeteries of London" = Think of this as a very hyper-trippy cousin of Sting's "Moon On Bourbon Street". Hehehe.

3.) "Lost!" = Definitely a sweet derivative of "Tender" by Blur.

4.) "42" = See what happens when you play "Imagine" and "Love Is Real" by John Lennon both at the same time. You end up with opening notes that are hard to ignore with a segue of major-notes version of "God Put A Smile...".

5.) "Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love" = Did I mention Japan awhile ago? Ignore Japan. Just experience the music and all it's glory. This upbeat track has a hint of U2's "With Or Without You".

6.) "Yes" = Gotta love the eastern sound of the string solo. Why does this track remind me of "My Friends" and "Californication" by RHCP? There is a hidden song in this track called "Chinese Sleep Chant". It has a whole lot of awesome droning rhythm guitars and ethereal vocals. Just lovely!

7.) "Viva La Vida" = Oh my god! Live the life, people! :D

8.) "Violet Hill" = Think of this as a derivative of "That's All" by Genesis watered-down with the morose air of GnR's "November Rain". !Gamer Alert! Wikipedia says this track is available as a download for Guitar Hero III. So cool!

9.) "Strawberry Swing" = This song made my synaesthesia go on overload. I saw things in my head. It's about time I did. I'm so happy!

10.) "Death and All His Friends" = It's the lovely taste of the coffee/milk-tea in your hand as you walk in the morning-rain to work. The hidden song is "The Escapist" which is another derivative from the sound of U2.

The acoustic versions of "Lost!" and "Lovers In Japan" serve as bonus tracks in this album.

Grab a copy today! :D

+

But Moleskine notebooks are too expensive. And why would I want to open up an even more expensive thing like a WD Passport Drive just to place it naked inside a mutilated $40 notebook?!

Other crazy stuff you can do with the Moleskine, like sticking an iPhone in it: [link]

These ideas are actually practical. Disguise your gadgets as something else to avoid "coffeeshop theft". But where do you people get the moolah that you can just cut it up like that? I digress.

My project is friendly to poor people like me. And it will save you plenty because snatchers don't grab at cheap record logbooks. Investing in external Hard Drives is heavy enough, so getting a disguise need not be as harrowing for your budget. The notebook I used here is a small cheapo Speedway logbook. My portable HDD is a 2.5 Fujitsu 80G inside an aluminum SATA enclosure. Get aluminum; it helps with the insulation of the HDD.

Yes, you can also use the same idea with your iPhones, MP3 players and other small gadgets. This took me only a couple of hours to make.

Enjoy! Thanks for looking!

A painting of a Betta Splendens aka Siamese fighting fish. It took me months to finish this because of countless accidents and mistakes with this painting. One area still had a teeny-tiny masking tape that I over-looked and I already painted over it! Then the paint seeped through the mask, creating crow-feet mess! Even just before taking the photograph of the final work, I was stupid enough to apply fixative without reading the label first. It was fixative for charcoal pencils and watercolors! Aaiiee! The acrylic painting started to look fungi-white and I had to make a quickie run through with both airbrush (yes, both!) while the fixative was still wet before it dried! Or I am doomed!

This painting is a mess, I know. But it was fun! It's... a mind-altering experience. Trust me! All the patience in the world! My fish, Allanon, sat quietly in his tank while he watched me cuss the entire time.

Thanks for looking!

Materials:
Reeves Acrylic Paint
Paasche AB Airbrush
Tamiya Airbrush

WIP: [link]

music: "No Ordinary Love" by Sade

.

The song is called "PULSTAR" by Vangelis from the 1976 album Albedo 0.39. No links to download, this time. You will have to do that by yourselves.

I found out that the music was by Vangelis in 1997.

.

You should also note that these females are the type that play hard to get but are really total sluts.

If she’s with 10 other bimbos that are just like her. Unlike the insecure female with ugly friends, these females are openly slutty.

If she has no real goal in life and thinks her looks will not only get her everywhere in life, but stick with her for the rest of her life - DELUSIONAL.

If she plays too many games. If you give into these games, eventually she’ll think you’re just a nice guy, and if that’s the case then she’ll just use you to show herself that a male is interested in her. This makes her feel wanted and temporarily cures her insecurity, don’t give into these games.

If she tries to be like Paris Hilton

Stages of Princess Syndrome
The following 3 examples will show you the progression of this mental disease throughout a females life.
Early Stages of Princess Syndrome
Sweet 16: Audrey
This is the early stage of princess syndrome, where being the center of attention and letting everyone know you’re a princess is more important than learning real lessons about life.

[Read more of it here...]

However, it is okay to feature deviants who create and share their music for everyone on and outside DA.

by

The music of ~DavidR-XV is a refreshing shot of experimental electronica. Now hold on! Just because I mentioned the word "experimental" does not mean it's your usual pretentious bohemian incomprehensible shite. His music is FAR from that filth! Be brave, forget about prejudice and check out David's music here: [link]

My favorites from his albums are:

At The Carnival (Le Funeral Lounge) = In the opening notes, ambience is gradually established. Thirty seconds into the song, a subtle build-up occurs. Before the first minute is over, the beat has entered into the carnivals of your mind. Images of Timothy Hunter from The Books of Magic hovered into my mind from an episode where he visits a carnival from his childhood and he encounters Death of the Endless. The story ends with Death inviting Tim for breakfast over pancakes.

Counter Revolution (Of Scorched Earth) = Mind blowing electronica! The music bounces on the sides of the walls of your skull! Back and forth... nothing like it! o.o

Dark City (Le Funeral Lounge) = This track would be perfect for the Dark City (1998) soundtrack! A down beat with bits of distorted elements. I feel so anacrotech-ish listening to this. Think futuristic 1940s.

Download the songs here: [link] Other songs to look out for by ~DavidR-XV are Escape From Lastday | External Memories (and try the Remix, too!) | I Don't Read Minds

by

DJ Dark has just released his first album "First Voyage". According to his blurb, the music of ~dj-dark allows you to "experience an exquisite feeling of trance, eclectic house, modern tribal, down tempo, and a chilling sound of electronica." I met DJ Dark in 2005 from an old job. We shared the same love for the music of Roger Sanchez. DJ Dark is one of the few laid-back people I know who does the night life with musical passion. And this is evident in his music, which you can download for free over here: [link]

My favorites by DJ Dark are:

Drums Of Joy = Rising above the strong house beat, a conga solo raps out a feeling of wild abandon. I would love to bring this track to the beach! With friends! And a bottle of tequila!

Sunset = The evening has come, and the beat goes on!

Don't Stop (a remix from the Queen hit) = this is not available from his album. It's a super secret track! I think this one was released as an on-air mix in one of the local FM stations. A hint of Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction" and loads of hard-hitting house beat! You will have to personally send a note to ~dj-dark to hear this.

Download the songs from First Voyage here: [link]

Das Parfum: The Story of a Murderer

Category: Movies
Genre: Mystery & Suspense

My favorite scent is vanilla and musk. And I would very much prefer it if the scent was on a person I like and not just anybody. If I don't like you to begin with, then no amount of vanilla-musk will make me like you, at all.

But in the movie Das Parfum: The Story of a Murderer, it seems that the sense of smell has no preference but the scent in itself. Well, I was expecting a film that spotlights solely on olfactory obsession, a theme in which is at great risk of becoming boring. Or worse, a subliminal full-length commercial for ghastly French perfumes.

I was proven wrong.

This movie made me wish I saw this on the big screen. But I am 2 years too late, as I did not even know it existed until someone mentioned it. I blame the government for this... they made me work my ass off too hard, I barely knew what movies were playing!

Unpredictable. Thrilling. Compelling. Dark humor, courtesy of Dustin Hoffman. Even darker with Alan Rickman on the sides. I mean, this Das Parfum was such a relief, after having to put myself through a "Sweeney Todd" DVD. Personally, I prefer movie murders with careful method and sensitive purpose instead of chaotic slashings and overdone Matrix-like blood splatter movements. I recall getting a migraine after watching the killing scenes from "Kill Bill".

I mean, just effing watch it. Although I'm wondering why there are two albums of the OST released, when both albums contain the same songs. Ah yes, there were two posters. So that means two album covers. Yes yes, get the soundtrack, too! I also give it a rating of 5 stars!!! :D

But I'm rambling. Now go. Watch it!

+++
