[Whisper To Me]

And heart to heart you'll win, if you survive! [Wednesday
May 13th, 2009 at 3:15pm]
After two months of living like an urban-nomad in this jungle-desert called Manila, I am finally blessed with a place to stay. Thank you so much for the support, you guys!

Of course, I will be starting from scratch. The scratching will start on Saturday, and I am hoping the traffic will be light and bubbly so I can have my bare essentials transported to my new bat-cave. Also, I have to acquire needs like a bed, towels, kubyertos, a chair, a drawing table, kitchen utensils, and most importantly, balde and tabo. However, all of these, including the movers, require bread.

I am available for art commissions and music gigs (Click here to view my price list) and I am selling my artworks so I can start my life over. The artworks I posted here are my personal creations, non-commissioned, and have their individual prices. Shipping and handling not included. Click on the thumbnails to full-view.

If you or a friend is interested, please drop me a note. Thank you so much and God bless!

PS: When I acquire a drawing table, all pending commissions will resume ASAP and will be regarded first priority.

Changes by Aquarela [Saturday
March 14th, 2009 at 11:52pm]

Saturday afternoons meant free concerts at Shangri-la EDSA. Just last week, Charice Pempengco did a free show at the mall atrium, effectively jamming the entire place with people. But this Saturday was different. There was an album launch of a band I have never heard of, before. The crowd was thin, but curious.

The huge stage backdrop said the band was called "Aquarela". They were going to launch their second album called "Changes". There was a black-and-white photograph of a couple. The event was fronted by the same UP College of Music professors who jam up jazz numbers at various events all over the metro. While the music played, I was able to grab a quick cup of brew at Figaro, my favorite filipino coffee place.

Soon, the music ended. The lights dimmed, as the Aquarela band did their set up. The band began with an upbeat song. Since I was not familiar with their music, I had no idea what the song was called. But it was a crossover type of music, something I'd like to kick off the evening with, after a long day from work. Or listen to, while cruising on the highway to Laguna. It was good. Very clean. The basslines were nifty without being intrusive. The drums and percussions were precise. The saxophone was spontaneous, with high and low notes jiving. The guitar riffs were refreshing and the vocals were AMAZING. Later, I found out that the song was called "Samedis Nirvana".

Hah! Just when I feared that today's local "jazz/latin/bossa" music is tragically besieged with high-pitched caterwauling and ghastly mispronounced lyrics by clumsy artists... here is hope, care of the awesome band Aquarela.

The band was brought together by French song-writer, Miguel Juteau, and Evelyn Juteau, a fellow Visayan. Oh hey! That's another Visayan kicking it good in the music scene! I'm so proud to be Visayan! The other Visayan band I like is Urbandub. But, I digress.

So, the band did a few more numbers. A good version of "Light My Fire", a few more French and Spanish originals, and a smooth one with "Boracay". There was a Samba version of the Visayan classic, "Usahay". Personally, I thought the song might end up being weird, knowing that Visayan songs are rather difficult to rearrange. But I was proven wrong! Aquarela's version was fantastic! I loved it so much, that later in the evening, I let my mom listen to it. She did not complain, which was surprising for someone who always has something to complain about.

So, I sat there among the audience, taking photos with my cheap camphone. I really enjoyed the songs. The band was pleasantly unpretentious, even in the way they were dressed. Just simple blouse/polo and slacks. There were no gimmicks or visual overload via feathers or sequins. Just pure music. And the crowd was well behaved.

After the show, I went to the back of the audience, where a table was set with CDs. I bought Aquarela's first and second album, at around P280 each. I think everyone should go and get a copy! The albums are available in stores! Buy Filipino!

Of course, the songs in the CDs are magnificent! I'm listening to it, right now!

The official website of Aquarela is www.aquarelaband.multiply.com

Commissioned work
2007

Last year, I was pretty much immersed in the world of storyboards and pencilling in general. I hardly had time to explore other forms of design. However, an external project or two would land in my email inbox every now and then. It would give me a chance to exercise other methods of designing.

After moving on to a new job, I gave myself the chance to experience... [Read more]

Sunny [Friday

When I saw the Obama inauguration and concert ball on TV, I laughed.

I laughed because the whole shebang was just like everyday politics here in my country. Government leaders holding song and dance variety shows. It's all over the place here. The only difference is that Obama has Bon Jovi, U2, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, etc.

Remember EDSA Revolution II during the ousting of President Estrada. An entire DJ console set-up materialized in the middle of the crowded highway. Apparently, someone decided to hold his birthday rave party during a political happening. The people there was practically a wall of flesh. So was the traffic jam.

Variety show politics is so common here, we'd rather go malling than watch it. :P

Another option is to go to the beach with friends. Ah, now that's better!

Now, this photo reminds me of Hemingway's "Garden of Eden". The novel was set in a beach in Europe. There was not a single mention of any garden. Hemingway spoke of the food, drinks, and everything else in such a manner that the reader can almost swim in it. For an unfinished book, "Garden of Eden" was superb.

So, we went to Puerto del Sol in Bolinao. It is located in the North, near the South China Sea. Three of us in this photo are on DA.

Oh, I just found out that some vector art I made a few years ago was included in the menu layout of SMAIRU. It is a Japanese restaurant located in Trinoma. If you're in the area, check the place out. The food is great! :)

I haven't had time to visit DA much these days. Recently, I've been caught up with my job. I now work here: [link] Check it out! Of course, I love it!

Through The Test Of Time [Sunday

Through The Test Of Time by =artistm0nk on deviantART

"What's that supposed to be about?", my cousin, ~keeptraveling asked.

"Patti Austin", I said.

He was all like :pointr: :| Then he started to look for a fat singing lady in the painting.

I looked at him and said, "It's about a song by Patti Austin."

I can be a total flip, sometimes. :ohmygod:

Back in the 90s, the now-defunct 88.3 FM City Lite was one of those radio stations that released a jazz compilation CD or tape to the local market. A highschool classmate bought a cassette copy of the compilation. Later, he thought he got sick of the songs and gave the tape to me. One of the selections was "Through The Test Of Time" by Patti Austin.

The song gave me a vision of an individual stripped off of everything. Blindfolded by uncertainty and driven by love, he can only hope for a bright future by taking the present, one day at a time.
"I could never try to write a better story
For the pages of my life you must have written for me
'Cause every line found a way into my heart

So we take it one day at a time
And leave all our worries behind
No matter which road that we choose
As long as we got each other
No way we can lose..."

Give yourself the chance to check out this song. Full of soul. Full of life. Full of win. ;)

Thanks for looking. :)

The Air That I Breathe [Wednesday
December 17th, 2008 at 6:13pm]

The Air That I Breathe by =artistm0nk on deviantART

12x14 inch canvas
Reeves acrylics
W.I.P.- [link] :bulletred:
Music: "The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies (played really loud... it makes up for 5 months worth of "OK Computer". Really, I think Radiohead borrowed from The Hollies.)

I started on this painting just yesterday. Something inside me snapped because I'm tired of being repeatedly told (both literally and socio-metaphorically) that my artworks are next to nothing or has nothing to say. But that's real life for me. Life is never fair. But all is fair in love. So if there is no love in the room, don't expect life to be fair at all.

Funny how disbelief and dismay can serve as inspiration.

So I made this painting. It doesn't have to be everything an artwork should be. Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe.

ZERO colored pencils! ZERO tracing! PURE acrylics! =P

PS- This painting is for sale. Feel free to drop me a note for more information. :)

Commission: Timra [Tuesday

Commission: Timra by *artistm0nk on deviantART

12x18 inches
Aquarelle watercolor paper
Mixed media

A commission illustration for my friend Aksel. She's currently writing a novel, and she had me illustrate one of her characters.

Reeves acrylics and Prang watercolors, alternately applied with Paasche airbrush and a regular Chinese brush. The deviant who gave me his Paasche airbrushes deserve a mega-THANKS , but he won't let me and I don't know why.... Those "difficult" gadgets have saved my life many times! :faint:

I had fun painting this. Aquarelle watercolor paper is expensive, but I'm hoping it will last better than its cheaper counterparts.

Thanks for viewing! :)

Good Friend: Final Version [Thursday
November 27th, 2008 at 1:20pm]

My version of "Good Friend" by Mary MacGregor

To sing second-voice to your own voice feels weird. Even weirder to sing in three voices with yourself. This is an "improved" version of the first draft. Feedback of the first voice is due to the cheap mic of the cheap digicam. But I sure had fun making this. Enjoy! :P

Magister Ludi [Saturday
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:20am]
Hey everyone. I need your help.

Some old virus called "magistr" (2001) aka "agent.ROI" has weasled its way into my Pc. How the hell, I have no idea. Forums say the virus spreads through emails. I don't recall ever opening a bogus one. Anyways, the virus is infecting important system files. And AVG promptly deleted these infected files while ignoring the actual virus! I am so sick of Windows! All these annoying viruses!

Now, I had my first taste of Linux, this evening. Everything is smooth... except for one problem. The wireless internet connection. Linux detects the wireless signal, connects to it, BUT maintains a "0%" connectivity. Even though I have input the correct ESSID and password.

Spoke to the only person I know who LOVES Linux, and he did admit that the wireless problem is common with Linux. It all depends which wireless card and which version of Linux one is using.

A big OH NOES! How many versions are there anyway? And which one?! Checked my wireless card. Compatible with Linux, it said. Now what?!

I need help with my Linux. Anyone out there with a shred of knowledge to share would be great! Thanks!

Windows is bah-humbug! I need to save my PC! Back up my files and hope the virus doesn't ride along into my portable drive? What should I do? :(

Random thought: It's funny how people are when they think they are being challenged... even though nobody is really challenging them. And even more interesting is how people act when they think you're really stupid.

Really amusing. I'll just sit back, munch on popcorn and watch these people dig their own graves.

People, it's those voices in your head, okay?

"I want to be remembered as an imaginer, someone who used his imagination as a way to journey beyond the limits of self, beyond the limits of flesh and blood, beyond the limits of even perhaps life itself, in order to discover some sense of order in what appears to be a disordered universe. I'm using my imagination to find meaning, both for myself and, I hope, for my readers." - Clive Barker

It has been 14 years since... [Thursday
November 13th, 2008 at 11:30pm]
... my first "stirrings", if I may borrow the term from Lois Lowry's "The Giver".

My feelings from the past can now be easily dismissed like a bad dream or a quick fart. Of course, there was a time that those feelings were real. For a moment, they were. But change is constant, and one must ride with the wind, whether you like it or not. Others may be lucky enough to find that going against the flow might lead to their happiness. I tried to get lucky, too. You know, seven years (and then some more...) down the drain isn't so bad now that I find that all of that is balanced out with what I am in, right now.

All in love is fair.

If you listen to the entire song (below), you will find that it is, so far, the best remake of the Stevie Wonder classic. It has been 14 years since this song came out from Workshy's "Soul Love" album. It still sounds excellent!

Eddie Vedder by ~artistm0nk on deviantART

Pearl Jam frontman, more than a decade after the grunge era. Baritone still good. Inspired, after watching Adam Sandler's "Reign Over Me". The iPod was blatantly endorsed in the movie, but I successfully ignored the silly gadget and rooted for the story, instead.
