ABOUT This visual arts blog was created to create a portfolio for me. I posted some of my artwork on my other livejournals but they became scattered and hard to recover. Another purpose _arete was created was an experiment to express visually rather than a written language. It is a fact that art is a global language which anyone can enjoy. Constructive criticism is always welcome but annoymous comments are not since those kinds of people don't have the balls to leave their name. All content here was created by me unless otherwise noted. (Photography, Graphics, etc.)

WHAT ARETE MEANS The most articulated value in Greek culture is areté. Translated as "virtue," the word actually means something closer to "being the best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential." The man or woman of areté is a person of the highest effectiveness; they use all their faculties: strength, bravery, wit, and deceptiveness, to achieve real results. In the Homeric world, then, areté involves all of the abilities and potentialities available to humans.

HOW THE NAME ARETE WAS CHOSEN As you already know, arete means "everlasting achievement". It is a simple yet a powerful word. I wanted to have a name that wasn't too specific or too broad. Even though you might think that arete has nothing to do with art, you're wrong. Explaining how arete relates to my hobbies is too challenging but I'm trusting that you can find out yourself.
