Basic Info
Name:_aranwe_
Bio
Aranwe is mentioned one or twice in the Silmarillion, always purely as the father of Voronwe. This historical omission may be a tactful one, considering that, in the Gondolin RPG, he is a staunch supporter of Maeglin.

Born in Aman, Aranwe learned his smith-work in the service of the House of Fingolfin. After crossing the Grinding Ice, he met and was enchanted by Cirdan’s pretty but sharp-tempered niece, Maiwen. The Falathrim and the court of Doriath were delighted to get Maiwen off their hands by letting her marry Aranwe. They had one son, Voronwe, while they dwelled in Nevrast. Despite his parents’ united hectoring, Voronwe was not cut out to be a smith, though he used the skills he gained from his father in his later fountain building. Aranwe is now estranged from Voronwe for various reasons. Aranwe remains uxoriously devoted to his wife, writing off anything anyone says against her to jealousy of her beauty or prejudice against the Sindar. His lively marriage is unusual for a 2,763-year old like himself, but Aranwe’s not complaining. He and Maiwen are better grandparents than they were parents.

Aranwe is a blacksmith at heart, loving his work next to his wife. He left the House of the Hammer for a higher position in the House of the Mole, feeling sympathy for Maeglin and strongly encouraged by social-climbing Maiwen. As a blacksmith he has a vested interest in the success of the iron mine of Anghabar, and does a great deal of work related to it. A typical Mole, he comes across as reserved and quiet, only revealing his dry sense of humor if he likes you.

With his pride, manners, and old-fashioned Eldarin beliefs Aranwe is distressed by the increasing foolishness and faddishness of Gondolin. He puts his considerable practical abilities to work for Maeglin. Unfortunately, his advice to Maeglin, though well intended, often supports Maeglin’s own pride and preconceptions.

Aranwe says, “Shouldn’t you be getting some work done for the glory of Gondolin instead of prying about into user profiles?”
