| Johnson & Johnson spends millions settling Ortho Evra lawsuits |

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Feministing/~3/419560684/011582.html According to Bloomberg News, Johnson & Johnson has spent at least $68.7 million to settle the hundreds of lawsuits filed by women who used the Ortho Evra birth-control patch and suffered blood clots, heart attacks or strokes.
Of 562 complaints reviewed by Bloomberg News, the vast majority of users alleged the patch caused deep-vein thrombosis, or blood clots in the legs, and pulmonary embolisms, or blood clots in the lungs. Some blamed it for heart attacks or strokes. The complaints blamed Ortho Evra for the deaths of 20 women.
One settled case involved Ashley Lewis, a 17-year-old high school junior from St. Louis who died in 2003. She developed a blood clot in her lung after wearing the patch for six months, according to Roger Denton, an attorney for Lewis's family, including her son, who was a one-year-old when she died.
Earlier this year, the NY Times found internal company documents that showed J&J hid evidence that Ortho Evra actually delivered much more estrogen than birth control pills, despite its claims otherwise. So scary. (I was actually a huge NuvaRing fan until I read about women having similar problems, like blood clots, at a higher rate than with the pill.)

| Weekend Box Office: 'Chihuahua' Chomps on Ridley Scott |
[Oct. 13th, 2008|09:32 am] |
|
http://www.cinematical.com/2008/10/13/weekend-box-office-chihuahua-chomps-on-ridley-scott/ There have been a number of moderate- to high-profile box office fizzles in the past few weeks -- 'tis the season, I suppose, though the flop ratio seems higher than average this year -- and this week adds a couple more to the list. First and most surprising is the tepid performance of Body of Lies, which couldn't leverage the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, or Ridley Scott to open to more than $13 million. I don't really get it: the marketing was action-packed and fairly ubiquitous (though a bit confusing -- people apparently had trouble deciphering the trailer), and I thought the star wattage would do more for the film. (On the other hand, Scott's A Good Year, which also starred Crowe, died an even harder death.) Is anything involving Iraq or the Middle East really that much of a turn-off right now? Or maybe anything perceived as serious? It's really a superb film, and one that benefits from the big screen; you should check it out before it vanishes.
Another addition to the list of big fat flops is Fox's City of Ember, which crashed and burned at number ten (10). I haven't seen it yet, but I'm a big, big fan of Gil Kenan's debut Monster House, and so was rooting for Ember. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone knew that it existed. The football drama The Express doesn't count as a flop, I don't think, since no one expected it to do much better than it did: $4.7 million in sixth place. People just couldn't bring themselves to care about this story again, though the movie isn't bad.
The weekend's hits were exercises in escapist frivolity, which might support one of my hypotheses regarding Body of Lies' failure. Beverly Hills Chihuahua held on to the top spot with $17.5 million, ensuring a sequel. And the low-budget Quarantine took second in a huge victory for Screen Gems -- a $14 million opening for a movie like this is gold.
The full list of estimates after the jump.

| Crossroads by Blakefancier (G) |
[Oct. 13th, 2008|08:54 am] |
Fandom: DRAKE’S VENTURE Pairing: Thomas/Francis Length: ~300 words Author on LJ: blakefancier Author Website: None Why this must be read: A tiny story, more of a poem than a story, really. The images, economical and bladed, cut to the heart – and end on a note of surprising hopefulness.
Thomas closed his eyes and heard the beating of the drum. It reminded him of his heartbeat and then it was his heartbeat and he could taste it in his mouth.
It tasted of autumn apples: crisp and tart and firm.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: implied Duncan/Methos Length: ~9800 words Author on LJ: elistaire on IJ Author Website: Taterville
Why this must be read:
This is a summer vacation story with a wonderfully original premise: while on a fishing trip with Duncan and Richie, Methos is abducted by a water nymph. Will Duncan be able to get him back?
This story just has a wonderful summery feel to it. I love the understated characterizations and the contrast of the relaxed summer-house atmosphere with Duncan's growing concern. The whole thing feels like sunlight dancing on the water.

| Julie, Julie, Julie, Do You Love Me? by genagirl (Not rated) |
[Oct. 13th, 2008|08:54 am] |
Fandom: HOUSE M.D. Pairing: House/Wilson Length: 2,814 Author on LJ: Author's LJ profile Author Website: None Why this must be read: genagirl writes, hands down, the best stories featuring Julie, Wilson’s never-seen third wife. In this one, set after their divorce, Julie drops in on Wilson at House’s place and finds him shockingly changed. House's caustic contempt of her has a pitch-perfect House voice that cuts to the bone. This is House being as cruel as possible -- he's protecting Wilson, after all -- and he's using every weapon at his disposal.

Julie, Julie, Julie, Do You Love Me? is the third in a series of fics that follow this storyline. The others are Fading Light and Watching the Light Fade. |

| A First Look at Dr. Watson, a Second at Sherlock |

http://www.cinematical.com/2008/10/13/a-first-look-at-dr-watson-a-second-at-sherlock/
The Sherlock Holmes photos appearing online are almost disappointingly fast, aren't they? JustJared already has a second set up -- this time, we get a glimpse of Jude Law as Dr. Watson ... and well, he looks like Law in a mustache. I was hoping for a frock coat, at least! But what's more interesting is the second look at Robert Downey Jr. in costume as the great detective. He's considerably more polished this time around, which suggests several of our commentors were correct, and we may have glimpsed Holmes disguised as a member of the lower class. With the rate these photos are pouring in, we may see Rachel McAdams in full corset soon -- and the costume geek in me can't wait to see what she's wearing as Irene Adler.

Fandom: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Pairing: Lyla Garrity Length: 1200 Author on LJ: cartwheel_dizzy Author Website: In Memories Why this must be read: In season two, a lot of Lyla's character development happened in scenes that hit the cutting room floor. Not a fan favorite from the start, the missing scenes left the audience scratching their heads and disliking her even more. In this character study Cartwheel_dizzy does an exceptional job of getting inside Lyla's head and taking us on the journey of Lyla finding religion. I can't promise you'll like her at the end of the fic if you didn't like her at the beginning, but I can promise her season two storyline will make a lot more sense.

Title: Falling Slowly Artist: Rating: G Disclaimer: I do not own the Harry Potter books or movies and/or photos used in this fanart; they are the right of JK Rowling, The Warner Brothers and various other publications. Neither do I own Falling Slowly sung by Glen Hansard. Notes: I realllllyyy hope that aerna likes this because it took me a while to make and I wanted to make it nice for her. Umm well the "Falling Slowly"relation is that all this time at school, they were separated by house rivalries and blood class discrimination yet they were falling slowly. Thanks to sanami-276 on deviantart for the resources I used. :) Made for Aerna. :) I made 2 other entries (for this round) and 3 versions of this entry before I got the right thing.

| Calling Your Bluff by mousapelli (PG-13) |
[Oct. 13th, 2008|09:37 pm] |
Fandom: GRAVITATION Pairing: Yuki/Shuuichi Length: one shot Author on LJ: mousapelli Author Website: http://www.theratbox.com/fanfiction.html Why this must be read:
Yuki always seems like he doesn't need Shuuichi, but this fanfiction is about discovering one of the ways he does. And it's sweet and cute, and its nice to see Yuki really show that he needs Shuuichi, even if it's only for a little thing.
Two rings into the phone call, Yuki nearly hung up, but due to the curse of modern technology, Shuichi's phone would have recorded his number anyway.
"Yuki?" Shuichi picked up after the third ring. "What's wrong? Are you dying?!"
"No." Yuki sat the phone down on the desk and twiddled with the earpiece a little.
"Is the apartment on fire? Has there been a tsunami?!" Yuki heard some noise in the background, and then the low murmur of Hiro's voice, followed by Shuichi's slightly muffled, "I think Tokyo is being invaded by aliens!"
