you take the good, you take the bad, you take 'em both and there you have...
...oh, you know the rest. so 7 weeks since my last entry. i've been neglecting you livejournal, and i apologize. to fill you in i've been working, doing the band thing(its going quite well, thanks for asking), playing a lot of madden '06, hit the quarter century mark, saw mc chris(fucking amazing), and found myself smitten with a girl who is moving out west soon... such is life. on another note, i think if everyone would listen to jack johnson, world peace could surely be achieved. try it sometime, you might like it. thats all i've got livejournal, til next time. from the lake cumberland clear channel battle of the bands myspace page: "First of all...we open the Battle of the Bands to ALL genres of music, If you play punk or metal or Bluegrass or rock or Christian...you are welcome to be in the Battle. It IS a competition...not a music festival...because that is what is is designed to be. It is also a way for lots of bands to come together to play for people they might not ever get to impact. For instance, if you are a fan of country music and you attend a country music festival, all you will get is country music. If you attend OzzFest...you're only going to get metal. This event has all the genres mixed together so that everyone gets a little taste of all types of music during the two days. We are not opposed to sponsoring a music festival, but the Battle is a 'battle.' It is our hope that bands exhibit good sportsmanship and support one another. In any competition, there may be some who have problems with someone else winning, but overall all but only one or two bands have ever shown themselves to be unkind over the outcome. BOTB is not a charity event. (However, we do give a prize to the band that gets the most canned food collected for God's Food Pantry.) Money is made for the radio stations by this event because it is a PROMOTION for the radio stations. Just like the Clear Channel Challenge or any other event that is not strictly done for a charitable organization, the radio stations make money on ADVERTISING from the sponsors and ticket sales. (Another example might be our Taste of Home Cooking School each fall.) We have to pay $500 up front to The Center, split the admission money with The Center (about $4000) and The Center runs the concession stand (don't have a clue as to how much money they made last year.) We have to pay the sound and lighting crew (that's about $2500) and we have to make sure judges, volunteers and workers are fed. We have to make sure there is water and snacks for the bands. We have all the pre-event costs of printing information, making backstage passes and purchasing trophies. Our title sponsor donates the $500 to give to the winning band. We use our trips and other items we have 'purchased' through advertising trades as prizes. Non-profit organizations may set up free booths at the event and we also allow the bands to set up merch tables so they can make some money, too. We have sponsors for stages and all, but that money doesn't even stay in our local budget...it, along with the ticket money and the entry fees, goes to our corporate headquarters. No one in the planning of the event receives anything other than time off from work to balance the hours worked at the event. We also have to get our friends and family members to help with security, set-up and general labor....these people do this without compensation and volunteer to get those jobs done. We do sell t-shirts (with all bands listed on the back of each shirt) and the money made from the shirts covers the cost of printing the shirts....and our corporate headquarters gets a little profit from those sales. Radio stations make money by selling advertising and sponsorships. That is what pays the salary of everyone from the on-air dj's to the sales staff to the receptionist to the person who cleans the building each week. That also pays for the electricity to run the transmitters so YOU can hear the stations. Radio stations, like any other business, have overhead for utilities, facilities, insurance, wages and such. Even non-profit radio sations, associated with churches or schools, have to pay employees and 'household' bills with the money they receive from grants and donations. Finally, we ask bands to pay a small entry fee because we need some sort of guarantee that bands will show up for the event. Anyone who has ever put shows together knows how important it is to keep as closely as possible to an announced schedule and to make sure that all advertised bands are there for their fans to see. We don't force bands to compete, but we do ask bands to compete...we hope your band will join us on January 2nd & 3rd....and yes, we might 'beg' a band or two to enter so that we have enough bands in any given genre." i'll let that speak for itself | | Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 | | 2:59 am |
modest mouse...
...if you ever get the chance to see them, do it... just not at bogarts. its been 2 years since the last time i went there for a show, and i most likely won't be going back, unless its just an insanely good show. not only can you not smoke there(or anywhere else in cincy, i guess) the entire staff are just fucking douchebags... theres really no other word for it. i mean, it was bad last time i went, but this time it was just fucking ridiculous. but yes, modest mouse was awesome. oh, and show tomorrow, come out, it'll be fun, promise Current Music: modest mouse | | Sunday, June 29th, 2008 | | 4:02 am |
good times...
so, everyone in the greater somerset area that has this thursday night off should totally check out the show at brandywine studios(or is it studio? i have no idea). the fallen will be there, a couple other bands who's names escape me at the moment(but i'm sure are pretty fucking rad), and i'm gonna be jamming with a killer born. super fucking stoked, basically the whole reason i quit going to local shows was because it bummed me out to no end to not be one of the guys in the front making an ass of himself in front of 50 kids, or 100 kids, or whatever. its not an ego thing, its just that i dig the shit out of playing for an audience(if you ever get the chance, most definately take it, it is a rush like none other). so yeah, bring a friend, bring a date, bring a friend's date. good times will be had by all. so yeah...
...too much going on all at once, its overwhelming, and my head won't stop spinning. its been a rough couple of weeks(bonnaroo aside, bonnaroo was fucking amazing), nothing i want to get into graphic detail about, but its mostly just me feeling sorry for myself. well... that and work. fuck work. but i finally get a day off tomorrow, might stop by bodeans and get the mushroom tats touched up, then back home to chill out and get my head on straight. night kids Current Music: the weakerthans-reconstruction site | | Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 | | 9:41 pm |

...and no one to talk to about it. eh, so much for being there for your friends, but that requires effort, i shouldn't be too suprised Current Music: ben folds-supersunnyspeedgraphic, the lp | | Thursday, June 12th, 2008 | | 7:48 am |

better...
so i clocked in another open to close shift today, it was awesome... not at all, actually. i kept my cool though, with the exception of cussing adam(the lone dude server), which i kinda meant, but was just as much all in good fun... i can't help it, i think its funny to give the kid shit. so yeah, its day two of the week and i've already got 25 hours and 15 minutes under my belt, which means OVERTIME... its been a bitch getting it, but i'm pretty stoked. and supposedly, we have a new cook starting on tuesday, not sure who the dude is other than apparently he's 22, and hasn't ever worked in a kitchen before... maybe he'll make up for it in personality. regardless, an extra set of hands is always good to have around, and maybe he'll end up being the intelligent type that doesn't have to ask if a veggie pizza has pepperoni on it like the last gem they hired(i can't make this up people). so, lack of sleep aside, things went relatively well today. and... um... yeah, thats all i have... ugh...
this is just me rambling, so feel free to ignore it altogether... work is becoming severely overwhelming, our cook line is insanely short-handed and little to no attempt has been made by our management to hire any new cooks... the great thing about all of this is even though we only have three cooks, and we're open an extra day a week now(sunday), they seem shocked when, suprise! the three highest paid employees in the store(me, casey, and hank, the fucking dream team) all get overtime. i worked open to close today(10:15am to midnight), and will most likely do the same tomorrow, which after breaks and all will give me about 25 hours in the first two days of the pay period. and i'm pretty sure i pissed off at least half of the servers in the store today, honestly there's no excuse for it, it's just my nerves are shot... and i've kinda got some personal shit going on right now too, but nothing i really want to go into. i've turned into an asshole at work... well, i've always kinda been that way, but its gotten worse recently, what with the whole constantly feeling stressed out from the moment i walk in the door to the moment i leave, and truthfully, i don't like it. i'm just not handling my shit very well right now. so yeah, that's it, and... i dunno... i'm gonna try to work on it. i feel i'm pretty chill outside of work, but once i get so overwhelmed(which, with three cooks bouncing back and forth between the dough table, the make line, the oven, the grill, the fryer, the walk-in, the freezer, the prep table, and the expo window all night, barely keeping up, if at all, happens pretty fucking often) perhaps i get a little crankier than i should. so yeah, 12 hour shift in the morning with less than 6 hours to sleep before, and i'm gonna try to maintain my cool the entire day... while i'm at it, i should try to quit smoking tomorrow. then again, maybe its all those angry rock bands i listen to... yeah, we'll blame it on the devil music Current Music: paramore(yeah, thats right)-riot! | | Monday, March 31st, 2008 | | 3:57 pm |

Update: 3/25/08
its been a few, so heres an update for the adoring masses. this past friday, i walked out of my job, along with several of my coworkers, i've told the story at least a dozen tmies so far, but the abridged version goes something like this: shit got bad, and i felt like i had no other option but to leave. so currently i'm unemployed. i've got an application in at sonny's, and another at bookland, i'll probably drop one off at the theater tomorrow. i figure, worst case senario, i can go back to wendy's for a bit, at least til something better comes up. i know they need people, and last week my old manager all but begged me to come back, so i think its a pretty sure thing, albeit a last resort. not much going on, other than that, at least nothing worth mentioning. if anybody hears of any place that's hiring, let me know Current Music: RX Bandits-Progress | | Saturday, March 15th, 2008 | | 4:11 am |

a sad commentary on the mindset of the american public
*note* this is my political rant for the year, so enjoy it... or don't so driving down the road a few minutes ago, i was stopped behind a car with an american flag sticker on its back window. the really disturbing part, however, was the text underneath it which said "if there had been no pearl harbor, there would have been no hiroshima"... ...lets look at the facts for a moment, the Japanese military launched an attack(albeit a surprise attack) on a U.S. MILITARY BASE(cannot emphasize that enough, MILITARY BASE), and we use that as justification to end the lives of thousands of Japanese CIVILIANS. we didn't bomb a strategic military position, we bombed a fucking city. at this point, allow me to divert from my original point for a moment to say this, i have nothing but the deepest and utmost respect for American troops, and i truly believe that they should only be put in harms way as a last possible resort, and in such time, they should be equipped with the best possible gear money can buy(we are spending billions upon billions of dollars on the military anyways, where the fuck is it all going?). please don't take this as my way of bashing the military, or any such nonsense. now, with that being said, when you enlist for military service, you do so being fully well aware of the risks that come with it(or at least, you should). there is a risk of being shot, bombed, captured and tortured, or any number of other atrocities, it comes with the territory. when you willingly sign up, you're saying that you understand and accept these risks. i'm not saying that pearl harbor wasn't a horrific event, it most certainly was. it was an unprovoked attack that claimed the lives of some of America's finest, and was a terrible tragedy. what i am saying, however, is that these men knew the risk they were taking, and chose to do it anyways(and God bless 'em for it). so, not to make light of pearl harbor, but how can we possibly compare an ambush that cost the lives of 2,388 U.S. military personnel, to dropping an atomic bomb on one of Japan's largest cities, directly claiming the lives of approximately 80,000 people(mostly, if not entirely, civilian), not to mention those who died due to the after-effects(all said, the total number of Japanese casualties lies somewhere between 90,000 and 140,000). can we honestly justify this, or is this an attempt to turn a blind eye towards our country's crimes against humanity by masking it with a sense of patriotism, and our duty to God and country? we won, so in the end, i suppose we're the ones who get to make that call. still, i can't shake that feeling in my gut... maybe we were wrong... this rant has been brought to you by the letter H, the number 13, and viewers like you Current Music: world war 4-leftover crack | | Monday, March 10th, 2008 | | 9:08 pm |

my, my, my, how time does fly...
...when you know you're gonna die by the end of the night. so i may have made a horrible decision today by agreeing to go to the gym with mofield tomorrow. so in case i don't make it back, i'd like to bid you all a fond farewell. other than that, st. patty's day coming up(my favorite holiday). in honor of the occasion, i went a little crazy at sam goody yesterday, but walked away with the new flogging molly cd, and the dropkick murphys "live on st. patrick's day", both of which will go to bean after my untimely demise tomorrow afternoon, along with the rest of my cds(sorry, she called dibs). but feel free to stop by and rummage through my belongings once i'm gone. ugh, to bed Current Music: dropkick murphys-"live on st. patricks day" | | Sunday, March 2nd, 2008 | | 10:38 pm |
lex vegas
got to go to lexington today. hung out with the incomparable arrison "a-jizzle" johnson and tylerwilburnrules(AKA cashanova). good times all around. hit sqecial, cd central, and some sweet used books/comics/dvds/vhs/cds/records store. got a couple used trade paperbacks, the new jack johnson cd, and some other random crap. all in all, a pretty good day Current Music: jack johnson-sleep through the static | | Friday, February 29th, 2008 | | 1:58 pm |
BAH!
so my tax return money is all but gone now, it was fun while it lasted though. on the up side, i've already given my roommate my money for my bonnaroo ticket(we're ordering ours together), i paid rent a day early, and all of my bills are completely caught up. unfortunately, the pub fired one of its cooks last weekend, and so far no effort has been made to hire and train a new one, which means theres a very good chance that i won't be able to go to nofx friday(friday is our busiest day, and with me gone, there'll only be three cooks on the line, and since we barely make it work with four, its just not happening). pretty pissed about that, but maybe i can talk to them tonight, and try to work something out... not really sure what yet, but we'll see what happens Current Music: punk in drublic-nofx |
