No Woman is a Whore [13 Jun 2007|11:19pm]
And this is what really pisses me off. A woman in prostitution left a comment on my journal saying that women in prostitution were intelligent, passionate and independent women. I have never denied that. All women are intelligent, passionate and, if given the opportunities, independent. But what is it that men value about us? Our creativity? Our passion? Our independence? Our commitment to life and liberty? Our capacity to inspire, support, communicate, create, articulate, analyse, radicalise, speak, act, discover, invent, explore, write, paint, share? Our commitment to the environment, to racial equality, to diversity, to integrity, to ourselves, to our sisters? Our ability to think with our feelings and feel with our thoughts? In short, do men value us for ourSelves?

No. Women are not paid for doing any of these things. Women are not valued or validated for being any of these things. What are women valued for? What can they earn money being?

Whores. Women’s ultimate value on the male commodity market is as dick receptacles.

Porn [13 Jun 2007|11:20pm]
Increasingly, I am thinking of porn as a political act of hatred against the subject people of women. And the act of masturbating to porn as a political act of terrorism against an oppressed and subjugated people: women.

I agree with MacKinnon that pornography is not speech but an act. A woman must be hurt to make it and all women suffer from its existence.

I had a thought recently that many of the men at the Activist Map launch had probably masturbated to pornography. And even if most of them had never done so (which I strongly doubt was the case), they have certainly reaped the benefits of our culture’s pornographic representation of women as whores.

The thought raises interesting questions about the political viability of me ever reengaging in activism with the male left. I am not sure why this thought has never occurred to me before but for some reason it hasn’t. I wonder now what use my little lecture was considering that I did not accuse the male members of the audience of directly committing acts of violence against women but rather talked of it as a social problem. I left out the fact that the left directly engages in the silencing of women whenever they show a documentary which excludes female commentary. I left out the fact that the majority of them enjoy and support incredibly misogynist representations of women in film and literature. I left out the fact that most of them engage in masturbation over porn which is an act of political terrorism against my people.

Well, I left a lot of things out. But I have to wonder whether I am just wasting my time bringing up issues like this with the men and women in the left. I doubt very much they will listen and I really hate shouting in order to be heard. Also, what do women really gain by associating with often male-lead groups which still consider women to be second class and barely human?
