Ms. magazine is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, feminist magazines in America. The mag has occasionally featured celebrities on the cover; Wonder Woman was its very first cover girl, while other cover stars include Meryl Streep, Cher, Cecily Tyson, Ani DiFranco and Pam Grier.

But the mag’s latest cover girl, Beyoncé, is causing controversy for all kinds of reasons.

A quote about author Janell Hobson’s piece posted on Ms.’s Facebook page garnered nearly 100 comments:

“Hobson sparks a discussion among other pop culture critics about female empowerment, combining feminism and ‘traditional’ roles, and the ‘politics of respectability’ for black women. At the end of the piece, it’s up to the reader to decide: Has Beyoncé ‘earned’ her feminist credentials? Why do we even question her feminism at all?”

In the use of the term “respectability politics,” Hobson is referring to the concept that to be taken seriously in a white supremacist society, black people — in this case, black women — need to adopt the behaviors and values of the dominant culture. Chief amongst the critiques about Beyonce on the cover of Ms. are, one, whether Bey qualifies as a feminist and two, whether a black woman who dresses/performs in a sexually suggestive manner is an ideal representation of black women. A lot of comments seemed to conflate the two ideas: that Beyonce can’t be feminist because she’s setting a bad example for young (black) girls by dressing provocatively. Still, others objected to Ms.‘s cover line questioning whether Beyonce had “earned her feminist credentials.”

Paulina Abdul Rubio says it's hard to sing like Britney.. Especially when your mic is turned on



Today a Britney fan was lucky enough to get to try out for X-Factor only to be confronted with cruel people. Here's their experience:

“Hey Jordan huge fan of Brit and your website. I submitted an online audition in March for the XFactor and heard back in early May that I was chosen to audition infront of the judges on the 21st. I sang Britney’s “…Baby One More Time” which I did kinda badly since I was very exhausted after sitting in the arena for 14 hours. Mainly because Simon was late and delayed auditions.

After my audition Simon commented “for a second I closed my eyes and thought Britney was on stage, but when I opened them back up it wasn’t and it was creepy because you weren’t wearing the schoolgirl outfit.” I was really embarrassed haha.

Paulina was rude. She said “not everyone can sing Britney, especially with a microphone,” which I took at her throwing shade at Britney for lip-syncing.

Demi gave me a thumbs up when I said I wanted a career like britneys and Kelly said she loved my shoes and demi agreed. I got four NO’s. I didn’t receive any negative feedback besides demi saying she doesn’t understand how I will fit in the industry sounding like Brit.”

Benedict Cumberbatch goes shirtless in a deleted shower scene from his film Star Trek Into Darkness that was revealed when J.J. Abrams made an appearance on Conan on Wednesday (May 22).

The scene was cut from the film but was revealed after J.J. was accused of sexism for showing Alice Eve in her lingerie during the movie, but not showing male skin.

“I’m not defending it, but then there’s a picture of Kirk (Chris Pine) who is not wearing all his clothes,” J.J. said, while showing a shirtless photo of Chris.

'Welcome back Sharon!' Simon Cowell hails Osbourne's X Factor return

SIMON Cowell hailed the return of Sharon Osbourne to the X Factor today as the new look judging line-up was officially revealed. Sharon will sit on the singing show's panel alongside last year's judges Nicole Scherzinger, Gary Barlow and her old pal Louis Walsh. Show boss Simon Cowell said of the news today: "Three words I never thought I'd say.... Welcome back Sharon!"

While former judge Sharon, 60, who quit the show in 2007, declared: “I couldn’t be happier about coming back for the 10th anniversary of X Factor. "I can’t wait to give Gary Barlow a big hug, sit next to the gorgeous Nicole, and of course throw water on dear Louis. Yay!”

It has also been revealed that wannabes will have to tackle TWO sets of auditions. First the hopefuls will face the judges in an intimate audition room. And if they receive three or more yeses, they will then go on to perform for the panel again in an arena.

Only if they prove they can impress an audience will they then make it through to the next round. Speaking about returning for a second series, Nicole Scherzinger, who won the competition with her act James Arthur last year, said: “I had so much fun and such a great experience on the show last year – it far exceeded all my expectations! I always give 110 per cent to all I do and I put everything else on hold to focus on X Factor and supporting my Scherzy boys. This year, now that I’ve worked out doing my new music and the show together, I am so excited to get back to the UK, my second home, and get stuck into X Factor 2013!”

Louis, who is the only judge who has appeared on all nine previous series, added: “I'm back with a vengeance! Ten years on and I'm just as thrilled to be involved in the best show on TV and even more delighted to be re-united with original judge Sharon Osbourne. Let the fun and games commence!”

Dermot O'Leary will also return to host the ITV1 show. The judges’ auditions will start on June 4 in Glasgow before visiting Birmingham, Manchester, London and Cardiff. This will be followed by the second stage of judges’ arena auditions in July.

Steven Spielberg will executive produce a new live action "Halo" television series based on the popular video games.

Spielberg, 66, appeared via video chat at the Microsoft One next-generation console launch Tuesday, noting he is a longtime gamer who began playing in the 1970s era of "Pong."

Microsoft unveiled the next-generation entertainment console that the company hopes will replace traditional cable company set-top boxes. It offers a combination of games, television, movies and other entertainment and is expected to go on sale later this year.

"For me, the 'Halo' universe is an amazing opportunity to be at the intersection where technology and storytelling meet," Spielberg said.

There are only a few days left of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, but some of the biggest films are still yet to come. Tomorrow brings Alexander Payne's "Nebraska," while Saturday includes both Roman Polanski's "Venus In Fur" and Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive." And as for Friday? Well, Friday brings the return of one of Cannes' favorite filmmakers, James Gray, back with his first film since 2008's "Two Lovers" with "The Immigrant."

In the meantime, Gray's given his first quotes about the film in the press notes.

Ke$ha likes to push the envelope, and we’d been warned that she drinks her own pee on the MTV documentary series “My Crazy Beautiful Life.”

On Tuesday’s episode, it happened.

The Parents Television Council watchdog group has condemned the stunt; in a statement, its president commented: ”If given the opportunity, I can’t imagine that parents would want to pay for a cable network that airs an episode of a pop star drinking her own urine.”

Judging by the footage, it looks like Ke$ha may not be so eager to make this a regular habit.

Bryan "Birdman" Williams, Co-Founder of CashMoney records, officially confirmed that Paris Hilton has indeed signed with the label. Paris will release her eagerly awaited Afrojack-produced album through the label. Birdman also answered that Paris' new single will be coming soon! While P herself revealed that she has recorded a new song with Lil Wayne, which one can assume will be the lead single.
