Hey everyone! What an awesome idea for the community. I've been looking through some posts and got tons of ideas already, so thanks! There's one person I'm having a bit of trouble with though, and I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone has.
Basically, I'm doing a 'secret santa' with my housemates where we make the gifts and I drew the girl who I sadly know the least about. She's twenty, studying textiles at my uni, loves the Arctic Monkeys and general indie music. She also likes cooking. She's a very girly girl so into make-up and fashion and jewellery - I did consider making her a bracelet but we have a cash limit and I'm not sure it'd be under that.
I should add that... I'm really no good at crafts! Which makes this a bit more difficult =P I can do basica origami but as for anything sewn or knitted... probably won't be able to do that.
I realise this isn't a huge amount to go on but if anyone has any ideas I'd be eternally grateful!

| Please help finding ideas for Christmas! |

Hey there! I just found the communiy and I sooo love it! Some tips I read were greatest! But here I am, having problems with finding something for my family. Isn't it strange that I know them so well and have no idea what to give them? I hope one of you has some great idea!
Who is the gift for? Mom, dad, sister, brother.
What is the occasion? Christmas.
List at least three of their interests: Mom: My mom loves everything that is done with a lot of love. I consider making her some cakes for her birthday (26th) and I know she will love it. She loves chemistry, reading, spending time with her children and friends and her plants. Dad: My dad is someone special. He can be the funniest man in the world, but sometimes he is also very quiet. He loves music, both classical (he is conductor of our church's choire, loves playing on his piano and singing old hallelujahs) and contemporary (he has a huge collection of LPs and CDs). Other than that, he likes doing things on his computer, sleeping and reading. Sister: My sister studies mathematics and physics. She loves doing that, and she's also teaching maths to some study group. She likes singing (but not professionally), having fun with her family, spending time with friends and reading. Brother: My brother is two years younger than me but a lot bigger. He reads a lot, loves playing fantasy games on his computer and doing all kinds of science.
Any stipulations or things to avoid (i.e., has to be something small, or they already have enough scarves, etc.): I can't do knitting, and it should be small, since I have to ride train with them (but that's not sooo inmportant). Books and CDs are redundant, since my family already has loads. Shouldn't be too time-taking, since I don't have much of it... : )
What kind of crafting do you do? I love making photo calendars (guess what I'm giving to my boyfriend), so everything that has to do with paper and scissors is fine. I'm afraid I can't do other things, and I don't think I'll have the time to learn anything new because of university pressure.
Name some other crafts that you would be willing to try: I don't know... perhaps something that has to do with wool...
Do you have a price range for materials? It doesn't matter, I just got my study benefit!
Do you have a time limit to make this present? Christmas, but preferably three days before christmas, since I then drive to my family and won't have much time (and privacy) to do anything.
Any other information you'd like to include: I haven't seen my sister for a year, and I see my parents and brother about once in three months. I'm not at pretty friendly terms with my sister, but it's getting better. I have just a few days ago argued with my parents about whether or not I culd buy me a cat, they were completely against, and I didn't do it in the end. I was on a special school for mathematics and have been thought of as the "little genius" of the family, which has always aroused huge arguments with my siblings because they're also very intelligent but couldn't attend the school. And so on... I love my family : )
Okay, I think that was all... I know my family is pretty weird, but does anyone have an idea for one of them? I would be soooo grateful! Thanks&greetings nirvanafan666

| Nerdy jewelry! |
[ Friday December 04, 2009 ] |
If anyone out there reads the Fables comic series or knows someone who does and needs a pretty present, I have a solution! I just finished a Fables-themed charm bracelet for my friend where each charm represents a character from the series. (Bigby Wolf was a wolf, Snow White had a snowflake since I couldn't find an apple, Cinderella had a shoe, Boy Blue had a horn, Clara the dragon had...a dragon, the adversary was a skull and crossbones, Prince Charming had a heart, the little wolf-babies had what was probably a fairy or angel, and surprisingly enough, they had an actual Frog Prince charm.) It turned out beautifully and she will probably love it. A word of caution--the company that makes the charms I found loves shrinkwrap waaaaay too much. It was really hard to get off.
Of course, this can be adapted to other works where the characters have symbols. I'd love to see someone make a Sandman themed bracelet...
EDIT: Okay, I finally have some pictures! Just going to link to my photobucket out of laziness, though, sorry! i3.photobucket.com/albums/y94/hannahisacat/fablesbracelet.jpg

| Gift Tag & Christmas Card in one |
[ Friday December 04, 2009 ] |
Sorry about the earlier post...I didn't put it in rich text format, but html and didn't know how to deal with it. Here's the picture of it.
My first submission. I hope this is good enough for you awesome crafty people. I'm just starting out...forgive my beginning syndrome.
I saw a similar gift tag on Martha Stewart's site, and had to incorporate it in my card so that I can send a useable gift tag for my recipient. Enjoy.
The Gift tag took these materials...which I didn't mind buying b/c of the fact that I use them every Christmas, scrapbooking, etc.
But the involved material: The card (surrounding the gift tag) Construction paper (got the Costco stack...probably something like $10-15 for 600+ sheets multi colored) holly stencils (got the martha stewart's stencils & it comes with other stencils $6 or so at Big Lots) red pen & green pen (I tried this again, and it came out better with the pastel green pen...unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the light green pen one (b/c I sent those to people already) Card = manila colored card stock paper (4.25 x 11) paper cutter
materials involved in the gift tag: adjustable circle cutter ($20 but if you buy it at Jo-ann's you can get it at a 40% discount at certain times) 2 inch scallop punch by EK ($15 but see above) bottom circle = 2.25 inches in diameter or so top circle = 1.75 inches in diameter or so Card stock paper (about $10 per stack if you get it on sale, clearance = even cheaper) standard single hole punch gift ribbon holly berries = construction paper

| Gift help for six friends? |
[ Friday December 04, 2009 ] |
Who is the gift for? Six friends: 3 guys, 3 girls, five of whom are approximately 20 and one who is about 35 (but hip and young at heart?). What is the occasion? Holidays/I love you guys/Thank you List at least three of their interests: writing, reading, quirky/amusing things, "lulz", and college related stuff. Any stipulations or things to avoid: Has to be something small since I will need to carry them around for six hours. (Let's say smaller than an orange.) What kind of crafting do you do? I can knit precisely one sitch, I draw/paint, have some experience with making things out of sculpey clay, can cross-stitch some, and have a mom that can help me sew. Generally have dabbled in everything. Name some other crafts that you would be willing to try: Anything but crocheting - I can't learn that fast! :) Also, not cooking - see the other info section. Do you have a price range for materials? Under $30 total would be great but I could spend a little more, if necessary. Do you have a time limit to make this present? By next Wednesday (Mmmm, procrastination)! Any other information you'd like to include: I'm the editor of my community college's newspaper and basically I'm gifting my staff, who I have also become great friends with. Two of them are transferring at the end of this semester, so I want to make the gift something that they can keep to remember me and their time at the paper. I also want to give them all the same general thing, with possible slight variations.
Thank you!

| 5 Minute Mug Cake.... |
[ Friday December 04, 2009 ] |
My son's school offers a shopping bazaar for the kids to get Christmas presents for immediate family. Priced for $1.00 each, they are donations from family members...
Here is what I made as my donation..
( Pictures under the cut ) The Mugs came from the dollar store, just make sure that they are microwave safe :) The idea came from this website: jccabulletin-geppo.ca/community-kitchen/5-minute-chocolate-mug-cake/ The bags, ribbon, and candy-canes all came from Dollarama as well. Here is the idea Take a small ziploc baggie and put in 4 tbsp flour 4 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp cocoa 1/8 tsp salt and I added 1 heaping tbsp Christmas M&Ms. close ziploc bag and place inside washed mug. Put the mugs in decorated clear bag, and tie off with ribbon. (I put Xmas confetti in the decorative bags as well to add sparkle). Tag each bagged mug with a tag that reads the rest of the directions and a list of the Dry Ingredients in the mug. 5-Minute Mug Cake Required additional ingredients: 1 egg, 3 Tbsps milk, 3 Tbsps oil a small splash of vanilla essence Add dry ingredients to mug and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add vanilla and mix again. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (High) The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed. Allow to cool a little and tip onto a plate if desired DELICIOUS and FAST! Enjoy! This can serve two if you feel like sharing J
