German Film: Gegen die Wand (2004) - Head-On [20 Aug 2008|09:37am]

GERMAN FILM:
Gegen die Wand (2004) - Head-On

DRAMA/ROMANCE - IMMIGRATION/TURKS IN GERMANY - HAMBURG - ISTANBUL

Cahit Tomruk (Birol Unel) and Sibel Guner (Sibel Kekilli) are immigrant Germans who live and work in the port town of Hamburg. In a bid to help Sibel break free of her family, which strictly adheres to Turkish customs, religious and otherwise, the couple decides to marry. But straitlaced families are just part of the problem; Cahit and Sibel must also counterbalance ancestral roots with life in a western democracy. Fatih Akin directs.

Contemporary film, somewhat gritty in part, set in parts of Hamburg and Istanbul/Turkey. It's a drama and a love story and a second-generation immigrant story all at once and I think it's a really good movie. Never a dull moment, haha. I gave it 8.5/10.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

Luebeck!!! [20 Aug 2008|02:33pm]

[scottygirliwish]
Hey! I'm in Luebeck for around two weeks to visit my Fiancé before my Fall semester at Uni starts again. However, he works during the day, so I must keep myself pretty busy. Can anyone recommend places in Luebeck for me to visit? I've already been to Travemuende nearby, and to a bunch of churches.

I've already used some German by myself so I can get around and oh goodness, it's the best way to learn along with going to a German lecture. :)

namuh htrae: science, psychology and spritiuality [19 Aug 2008|07:15pm]

neurotheology

[namuhhtrae]

i am an author attempting to write a book that was originally about a character called namuh htrae. My actual name is Matthew Bowron, the book I am writing is called Namuh Htrae. The book was originally meant to be a fictional tale about an immortal woman who lived throughout historical periods of humanity, the tale being about her experiences learning about humanity and its role in the universe.

As an author hoping to capture the development of 'namuh htrae' I studied developmental psychology and became particularly interested in the theories of Erik Erikson. Erikson suggested the ideas of developmental psychosocial stages, 8 originally, with 2 more being later added by students after his death. It was during this time that i was introduced to teh Bahaii Faith and their ideas of progressive revelation. Progressive revelation is an idea about how different manifestations of God (Krishna, Adam, Moses, Noah, Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Bahulluah and the Bab) come at different ages to bring different ages of development to humanity. It was there in comparing the two theories I saw what appeared to be a similarity. now I have been criticised at being trying to hold objective views. And so what I am proposing is more of a  thought-experiment, a hypothetical, but in no ways provable or maybe even realistic approach at ideas of human development and spirituality.

But for those who are interested read on

Gender and Religion: Getting in Touch with the Feminine [19 Aug 2008|07:58am]

neurotheology

[fringekitty]
While doing some research on autism spectrum disorders, I happened to notice in several sources that although such conditions, which include autism, asperger's and other developmental disorders, appear more predominantly among men, women who had the disorder seemed to have some variant of the x chromosome, one of the pair was damaged or was missing entirely, as in Turner's syndrome. These findings allowed researchers to conclude damage to the x chromosome (for both men and women) was one of the hallmarks for autism spectrum disorders. Such damage seemed to adversely impact empathy, social skills and the ability to read and use nonverbal communication. Anyway, this prompted me to ponder the role and importance of religion and/or ritual as a gender-influenced issue. Thoughts, anyone?

Fame and Media [18 Aug 2008|08:37pm]

Another strange question that popped into my head. Apologies, I seem to be struggling to word this correctly.

What is the stance on 'celebrity interest' in the media, such as magazines, tv etc? I'm just using the UK as an example here, where most celebrities can't go to the toilet without a ten page spread in a magazine detailing it or articles like "Celeb Bikini Disasters". You know, mostly pointless articles.

Are German papers and magazines more reserved in the content they display about a famous person's life?

I have continually made life hell for a man who used and then dumped me unceremoniously over five years ago. It's nothing physical - he lives in another state now - but he's been fired because his employers have received notes from me, his flight arrangements are often cancelled, complaints made to his landlord, his electricity mysteriously turned off.

Reading this card, I have decided to stop, because it made me realize that by not letting go, the only one I'm really torturing is myself.

Kurt Vonnegut liked to say of Isaac Asimov, though both of them were avid humanists, "He's in heaven now." I think Kurt, too, is in heaven now.

PostSecret Proposals: Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace

My wife and I were recently invited to a Wedding to be held at the American Visionary Art Museum. We don't know the couple. They invited us because of the groom's creative marriage proposal at the PostSecret exhibit and we can't wait to attend.

Here is their romantic story as told to me by Rebecca Hoffberger, the founder of the AVAM.

For people who don't know, most of the secrets are displayed along the side of a circular staircase that gradually rises to the third floor of the museum. As the couple slowly ascended the stairs she read every PostSecret postcard. He knew she would because it had been her idea to attend the exhibit.

What she did not know was that earlier he had made a special arrangement with me to replace the last post card with a special one he had created just for her see.

When they reached the top of the stairs she read the final card, "I don't know if I believe in God, but I believe something Great brought you into my life. If you turn around I'll ask you to marry me. . . "

[Read the rest of this story and watch a video of a live PostSecret Proposal at Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace.]

Another PostSecret exhibit is currently on display at the Yeiser Art Center

Weather Question: best time of year to travel? [15 Aug 2008|12:17am]

deutsche_kultur

[lleno_d_alegria]
Hey guys,
Sorry if this has been asked/answered already, but I couldn't find it....

I'm an American student studying in Niedersachsen until next summer, and my best friend and his sister want to plan a trip out to visit (woohoo!!!!!!). My friend's sister definitely wants to go to France, so we'll probably end up spending a portion of our time together there, but I was wondering when the best times of years to travel are.

It is important that the weather not be so cold that we won't want to go outside, cause I want them to get the most out of their trip. Keep in mind, they're used to the sunny, hot, dry CA weather. They know it'll inevitably be a colder climate than CA, but don't want to freeze! They were thinking of coming in October/November, or maybe March.

What do you guys think?
Danke im Voraus!

I know this is a bit off topic for this group, but maybe there is a biochemical or neurological link created that allows for the following topic (I doubt it, but that does not make it not so...lol).

In watching a documentary last night about cult groups, one thought came to mind (well, a bunch did, but one stood out).

What is the connection between guys proclaiming to be the reincarnated embodiment of Jesus Christ...and the need for prescription glasses? you'd think the connection to God would entitle them to a bit more of an unblemished body.

Details: young lady in the 1930s/1940s [13 Aug 2008|10:10pm]

deutsche_kultur

[pisica]
Another 'trying to get accurate details for a novel I'm working on, partly set in Germany in the 1930s/1940s' question:

In this period, among the middle classes, what were the delineations between a girl and a young lady? In the UK it largely involved hair going up and hemlines coming down, but in looking at pictures of German girls of that period, I find some who have their hair braided and pinned up even when they look around 11-12, so I don't want to assume anything. I'm guessing cosmetics would be out, even before the BDM ideology became a factor.

Basically, if I have a girl dreaming of 'when I'm a young lady', what sorts of changes will she be dreaming of? Hairstyle, clothing/shoes, jewelry, other? (Wrt jewelry, what might have been appropriate gifts for girls ages 9-12?) Non-material information also useful (does she gain extra responsibilities, that sort of thing?).

Was there a particular age at which a girl would cross that line, or would it vary?

Was there an equivalent phrase to the UK's 'out of the schoolroom'?

Many thanks.

A thought-project: Creation and Evolution (not versus) Day 1 [14 Aug 2008|01:58pm]

neurotheology

[namuhhtrae]

As a postmodernist I believe in both spirituality and science. It was during my re-readings of Genesis and my re-observation of scientific studies that I thought I came across a similarity between the first chapter and modern scientific ideas of astronomical evolution.

I apologise first and foremost if some people are offended by this, as some people believe every word of Genesis to be correct. Others will say that science cannot be connected to spirituality. But as a person who yearns for peace, I thought that this interpretation could solve the issues between those who believe in scientific evolution and spiritual creation, showing that there may be more similarities between the two than we thnk.
