WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL [12 Nov 2008|01:56pm]
[ mood | determined ]

National Protest Against Prop 8

this saturday, civil rights activists, union leaders and their members, those in favor of the separation of church&state, and the LGBTIQQ community and its allies will be meeting across the country to voice our opinions about our inalienable right to marry whom we choose, and our inherent equality under the law. please join me in letting our political leaders know that we will not idly stand by and allow intolerance and discrimination overturn our most fundamental civil liberties!

Saturday. Nov. 15th
Join The Impact!
Statewide.
On the steps of your City Hall on November 15th at 10:30am PST / 1:30pm EST, our community WILL take to the streets and speak out against Proposition 8.

since i'm working this weekend, i'll likely be attending the Protest at the Orange County location. i'm also planning on attending this protest tomorrow:

Thursday, Nov. 13th
No On Prop 8 Protest - Irvine, Thursday 11/13 4:30pm
Corner of Campus & Culver Drive, Irvine
Marching to Culver & Alton.

you can keep abreast of future protests and rallies by visiting the My Direct Democracy Webpage.

please repost this and spread the word. this is a grassroots effort that needs the work and energy of all of us if it is going to succeed. you have a voice - exercise it! united, we have an undeniable power in our numbers.

make signs, make extra signs for your friends. we need to make ourselves as visible and large a body as possible. please come out to support equality for all under the law!

fuck you and your rigid gender roles! [30 Oct 2008|01:53pm]
[ mood | SCORE ONE FOR THE LITTLE GUY ]

as i am officially a member of the unemployed masses (save for the scant amount of money i earn teaching piano and minding the children), i obviously don't have a lot of money to contribute to the political campaigns that i support. i wish i did, because i would certainly put my money where my mouth is, and perhaps attempt to take on the huge out-of-state institutions (i.e. the LDS church) who are pouring millions in support of Prop 8.

i feel very strongly about LGBTIQQ rights, and feel equally as strongly about preventing discrimination against individuals in any form. as one of [info]burntcurtis' professors said, defeating this proposition is one of the most "important civil rights issues of our time." hear, hear.

it follows, then, that seeing the Prop 8 people co-opting images of children, images of them during what was surely a joyous event in their lives, sickens me. i am constantly encountering ads - on both television and radio alike - condemning teachers for teaching about same-sex marriage at school. you know what? if you want to raise your children in a bubble, if you want to deny the existence of same-sex love and commitment, then you should ENROLL YOUR CHILDREN IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS THAT ARE NOT PUBLICLY TAX-FUNDED BY THOSE AGAINST WHOM YOU ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO DISCRIMINATE!

what is truly disheartening is the number of "Yes on 8" signs that have sprouted up all over Newport Beach. Driving to campus the other day, I encountered at least 13 of them posted on the grassy medians on Jamboree, from PCH all the way down to Bristol. i was infuriated, which lead my brother and i on a wild goose-chase for "No on Prop 8" signs which we planned 'sandwich' around the "Yes" signs that we encountered on public property. so we called. we called dozens of people, all at different offices in the county, and played phone tag all afternoon. what we learned is that out-of-state private interest groups are literally funding a multi-million dollar effort to get this proposition passed, and invested a large chunk of this money into yard signs that they ordered from China. the signs were delayed in shipment, and hence the delay in their appearance. the delay is over: the signs are out in full view. the "No on Prop 8" movement just couldn't match that much funding, so "No on 8" signs are in short supply.

this angers me to no end. these out-of-state special interest groups, they aren't even Californians! GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR STATE AND OFF OUR BALLOT, THANK YOU.

i am not alone in my sentiment. there are numerous reports of people so incensed that they have taken to removing these signs. i wanted to join them. i mean, if the signs are abandoned on public property, they're essentially litter, right?

john mentioned that i could get cited for infringing upon someone's right to free speech by doing so, but i wasn't so sure. so, this morning i called the city, spoke with the head of the general department, and cited 6 different ordinances and codes that these signs were violating. and lo! they called the codes department! and they agreed! the signs will be removed immediately.

since i cannot financially support this effort, i will contribute in other ways - by donating my time and energy. i will continue to call back and inform of "code violations" wherever i see one of these signs posted in a public place. because i am all for the right to free speech - if you want to be a bigot, you have every right to be so - BUT DO IT ON YOUR OWN PRIVATE PROPERTY, NOT PROPERTY THAT THOSE IN SAME-SEX MARRIAGES HELP PAY TO KEEP GROOMED AND CLEAN OF LITTER. don't involve people like me - people who feel that everyone has the inherent liberty to pursue their own happiness - in your close-minded, intolerant positions.

i know i'm preaching to the choir on this one, but please, Please go out and VOTE NO ON PROP 8. it's discriminatory, unfair, and wrong.

you must absolutely watch these the first opportunity you find: Isabella Rossallini (one of my heroines) has made a collection of short films depicting the mating rituals of various insects entitled greenporno. watch them now. no, seriously, right now. they are FANTASTIC!

[ mood | aghast ]

seriously, WTF?!

please do not ever buy this "imagination kit" for your daughters. hearing a young girl singing "i love when my laundry's clean-clean-clean" against a backdrop of a young girl putting "laundry" into the "laundry machine" does little to advance a woman's own self-worth above and beyond her fulfillment of apparent obligatory domesticity.

WHAT THE HELL, HASBRO.

still cute, though! ;-D

it is a freaking furnace in my apartment; i don't quite understand it - it's always so much hotter in here when my brother is in the apartment. and it's not because he brings the party. anyway, i've spent the last day reading/writing/generally recovering from this weekend's festivities. so much fun in so short a space! i can't wait to see your rad faces again, and soon!

more updates to come. :)

dear jean-jacques rousseau,

this passage of your "Social Contract" is fucking brilliant:

Finally, when the state, near its fall, exists only by a vain
and illusory form; when the social tie is broken in all hearts; when
the vilest interests flaunt boldly in the sacred name of the public
welfare, then the general will becomes silent; all being guided by
secret motives think no more like citizens that if the state had never
existed. Iniquitous decrees are passed falsely under the name of law,
which have for object individual interests only."

word!

love,
élan

OH THE THINGS YOU WILL SEE [18 Jun 2007|12:17am]
[ music | the soft call of the lighthouse fog horn :) ]

this past saturday, i made my way up to northern california. if you’ve never made the drive along the 101, you’re clearly missing out. it is a gorgeous ride. i know it like the back of my hand, so often driving to and from santa cruz, visiting family, running away for weekend adventures. driving this route is like coming back to an old friend. this time, i took some pictures for the sake of posterity. have at 'em:

virtual roadtrip )

since arriving, i have been a cooking machine! i made some killer polenta (my grandmother’s favorite); arugula salads with homemade lemon-garlic dressing; tuna salad with dill; sautéed mushrooms with fresh garlic, sage, and thyme; rice fettucini with puttanesca…my aunt’s kitchen is my cooking paradise, and cleaning it up is a breeze. it is so charming and perfect that it’s almost intolerable. we're greeted by a thick marine layer in the morning, but this burns off by mid-day for gorgeous, sunny afternoons. and from where i sleep, i can hear the faint sound of the fog horn from the nearby lighthouse. all signs point to heaven.

aside from cooking, i have devoted a sizeable amount of time to my exploration of the New Thought movement, as I am writing a 15 page paper on “the gendered dimensions of the New Thought movement of 19th century America.” fascinating, right? i think so. :)

on tuesday, my cousin adam arrives from new york. on wednesday, i am picking up my awesome cousin [info]noss, my brother [info]lukeitupanddown, and hottie #1 [info]burntcurtis from the airport. i am anticipating lively family dinners, ribald conversations, and a level of wittiness that is seldom attained in other situations. also: sushi! i am so madly in love with my family i can hardly stand it.

stay tuned for more photos, featuring 200x the alcohol, wrestling, and pain. we’ll be bringing the lulz!

i have a question for all you bakers out there (specifically [info]salome_st_john and [info]vintagelife):
do you have any experience working with fondant (side note: is there a difference between fondant and rolled fondant?)? i am planning a super-secret-surprise (so i can't really elaborate), and i was wondering if there are any "tricks" or anything i should watch out for while working with it.

thank you for any/all help/advice that you can offer!

10 cosas [13 Dec 2006|06:56pm]
[ mood | tired ]
[ music | etude no. 10 - phillip glass ]

RULES: Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits/little known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things/little known facts as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tagbacks.

1. My grandfather, Earl Klein (see here), was the original background artist for the early Bugs Bunny cartoons (i.e. “Bugs Bunny Super Star,” etc). He also worked on The Harlem Globe Trotters and Hanna-Barbera’s Banana Splits, among other cartoons. He was my best, best friend when I was young. He lived in Mexico for the majority of my childhood, but we would talk on the phone often, and I spent many summers down there. He died from ALS complications when I was 10 years old, and his death triggered only 1 of 3 times that I’ve ever seen my father cry. I cannot think or talk about this without immediately tearing up.

2. I have intellectual crushes on all of my professors. I usually leave class feeling really giddy with my newfound knowledge, and I can’t freaking wait to talk with them during their office hours. I find that I do significantly better academically when I maintain a personal report with my professors—some level of personal accountability, or something like that.

3. Since returning to university, I’ve stopped picking at my nails. This was a nervous habit that I’d had for years, and with no end in sight. As soon as I had officially matriculated, however, this ceased to be the case (despite an increase in immediate stressors). I suppose I was more anxious about the direction of my life than I recognized.

4. When I was 14, I traveled with my father, uncle, and brother to Alaska to go deep sea fishing. It was really incredible….and incredibly terrifying! On our last day out we got stuck in a storm, our 5-person boat rise and crashing thunderously over 11-ft swells. My dad was being totally arrogant, and insisted on stepping outside the cabin to secure the fishing rods. I was terrified that he was going to fall overboard. We were the last boat that successfully made it back to the docks; the remaining 7 boats had to be rescued by the coast-guard.

5. The first summer I studied abroad in Mexico (’99), I suffered an intense, two-month long case of amoebic dysentery (I will spare you the details). When I returned I was 114 lbs, and looked on the verge of death. The second summer I studied abroad in Mexico (’01), I endured a gnarly allergic reaction resultant of being stung by A SCORPION!!!!!! And yet, SMdA, Méx remains one of my favorite places on earth.

6. I used to be really into E and deep-jungle and rave-culture when I was 15-16. wtf, right? whatever dude, don’t judge.

7. Every single person with whom I’ve been “intimate” was, at one point or another, a student at the small boarding high school I attended. This is really weird to me and frankly creeps me out.

8. One of the most beautiful experiences of my life was backpacking the 26-miles of the Lost Coast. It was completely a breathtaking trip, and in my heart of hearts I hope to do it again (hopefully soon!). I am somewhat of an outdoor purist—none of this car-camping horseshit! It’s all about strapping your essentials to your back, and pushing yourself to places not normally accessible by other means of travel.

9. Since returning to school, I’ve finally found the motivation to get off my lazy ass and start running. So I’ve been running. A lot.

10. I was hardcore into sports when I was in high school (by virtue of mandatory participation on sports teams—small school). I am particularly fond of lacrosse, and if you are ever in a competitive mood I invite you to BRING IT.

i tag [info]foxy_manacle, [info]burntcurtis, [info]noss, [info]maniacgiraffe, [info]stateofemergncy, and [info]goatrodeo. sorry fools.
