They are the only group working on the field every day watching and documenting every action taken against the buffalo. The Montana Department of Livestock are responsible for the slaughtering (as well as poachers.) They claim that the buffalo are infected with Brucellosis (bacterial disease that affects livestock and wildlife, sometimes causing cattle to abort their first calf post-infection.) and COULD spread it to the cattle. It is extremely important to note that there has never been a documented case of a wild buffalo transmitting brucellosis to livestock. As of the spring of 2006 the herd in Yellowstone was 3,500 strong. This is a dangerously small population compared with the tens of millions that used to roam across America. This is the only herd of buffalo that are the last genetically pure remnant of the heards of millions that roamed the American plains. Descended from just 23 buffalo that survived the 19th century slaughter. Wild and unfenced, this unique population holds the key to the future of wild buffalo in America.
