Help if you could, please... [07 Oct 2008|11:49am]

neworleans

[fidgetofdoom]
(cross posted- sorry if it floods your FL)

My lap top was stolen from the Wendy's on Claiborne off of Napolean. The guy who did it was caught on tape, but the police never showed up to take the report. I'm on my way to the station to do so now, but I'm sure that the thief has tried to get rid of it by now.

It's a rather largish Toshiba Satellite, and it's COVERED in stickers. The entire top as well as the majority of inside and keyboard.

I don't have any money to offer as a reward, but would really appreciate any info or help.

You can reach me at fidgetofdoom@yahoo.com

Should the laptop actually be returned to me, I would be more then happy to offer free babysitting or Housecleaning or something to compensate.

Thanx for your time.

below is a pic of said laptop:

Reinventing the Crescent [07 Oct 2008|09:53am]

neworleans

[robzas]
Went to the Riverfront Project meeting last night, and came away with a greater understanding of the importance of creating a great riverfront for the future of this city. It is a very ambitious task to undertake, but if we don't act we may never get another chance at this. The speakers last night were very insightful, and it was a pleasure listening to Dr. Norman Francis. Mr Sean Cummings elaborated a little on the dilemma that is arising from the plans of the port authority to place Cold Storage at the Gov. Nichols wharf.
The importance of emailing Rep. Juan A. LaFonta, whose district the area in question lies, I cannot emphasis enough. To explain to Mr. LaFonta how the the present "planned " location would undermine the future of making the river accessible and viable to the citizens of the city and the tourist that visit. The Port Authority has other locations available but what it comes down to is money. 30.6 has already been allocated by the state for Cold Storage, that's right our tax money.

Would it not be to much to ask if Cold Storage could pony up the rest to be placed elsewhere, maybe the Napoleon st wharf. The short-sightedness of actually building on the Gov. Nicholls wharf should not be lost as a major deterrent against the Cold Storage Plans. To look back and regret not having done anything would surely be as soulwrentching as if they had built the expressway over Decatur.

We need to act ASAP

Well, Running With Scissors has done it again.

If you're like me and want to see more theatre — theoretically anyway — but can never seem to manage the time to go out to see a play, this would be a good candidate for getting you off your ass and into the Chat Noir, where I promise you will leave with your face hurting from laughing so much.

Ist das nicht eine Schnitzelbank? [06 Oct 2008|11:45am]

neworleans

[emperorbuz]
Let me tell you- if you live in the New Orleans area and you are looking for an AWESOME time outside of the french quarter during Oktober, then you need to go to the Deutsches Haus on 200 S Galvez and pay the puny $5 cover charge which will get you into....

OKTOBERFEST!!!!!!

If you happen to be a member, or you go with a member of the haus, then you get in for free. If not, so what? $5 for a night of fun and access to good german beer on tap is WORTH it.

Beer by the pint is cheap. Great German food tastes good and is cooked by haus members and the oompa pah pah bands play from 6-11:30!! There is plenty of fellowship and merriment and ample opportunites to dance, drink and participate in sing-a-longs! Many people come dressed up, too, so that's always fun. Also, FYI, bring your own favorite steinkrug or mug, and the bartenders will be happy to fill it up for a comparable price (usually the same as a pint, unless you come with a maskrug or an exceptionally large stein), so you don't have to walk around holding a plastic cup. So beer afficionados like me who refuse to drink out of plastic need not worry!

Oktoberfest opens on Fridays and Saturdays at 5pm and closes at 12. For more information, check out the haus' site. http://www.deutscheshaus.org/

Also, know that you are benefitting a good cause; the Deutsches Haus, which is a German Community center open since 1928 in danger of being torn down. If you would like to know more about that, or become a member, or to volunteer your time at the haus, simply visit the site, or visit the haus itself during normal operating hours!

End Transmission.

hi all.
i will be in new orleans tuesday-friday for work (a convention), staying in the quarter.
i lived in la (baton rouge) until i was 13, and am currently a resident of portland oregon. that said, i've never been an adult (read: drinking age) in louisiana, and while i know my way around directionally, i'm not entirely sure where to end up with my few free evenings in town.

your advice would be greatly appreciated: i'm looking for recommendations for great bars or venues, and potentially an event to attend and/or lj-peeps to meet-up with. (basic "me" stats: 29/f, editor, dj, liberal, creative-type. check out my lj/profile for more.) i'm not too worried about the food thing (i've never struggled to find amazing restaurants in louisiana), but should you have an incredible suggestion, i'm receptive to that, too.

thanks in advance!

FOUND Card w/Tickets at Atlantic Antics Street Fair [05 Oct 2008|05:23pm]

nyc_for_free

[acidcrys]
Hey everyone. We found a birthday card today at the Atlantic Antics street fair in Brooklyn with tickets inside. The card was from "Dave." We're looking for the owner and thought perhaps we'd have some luck on this community (already posted in Craigslist). If it is you - please respond to this with what the tickets were for and what the card had on it, and we'll arrange for the card and tickets to be returned! If you know of someone named Dave who had a father with a nearby birthday and might've been at the Atlantic Antic street fair - please spread the word.

If anyone has any more ideas on how we can get this back to the owner, please share! Thanks.

I'm from Canada, and looking to make another trip down to NYC soon.

I stayed at the Candy Hostel last time, and though I found it more then adequate, it was a little expensive. Can anyone suggest a safe, clean hostel in the city? I really have no need for anything special, just a place to rest my head without worrying about catching something or being robbed.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Volunteer for a good cause! [03 Oct 2008|03:54pm]

[drunah]
Please join YES! to find out how you can help adult literacy students!

YES! is the YMCA Educational Services Branch. Founded in 1977, it is the oldest adult literacy provider in New Orleans. Its services are offered free of charge to adults ages 16 and over who need to improve their basic skills in reading writing, math, and job readiness.

The need in New Orleans for adult literacy programs is staggering. Statistics tell us that at least 30% of our present NOLA population is functioning at pre-GED levels (Grades 5-8). Another 25% are functioning at the lowest level of literacy (Grades 1-4).

Most of our students work full-time jobs. They have families to care for and busy lives. They make time in their schedules for YES! because they know that education is crucial to moving up at the workplace. They may want to be able to help their children with schoolwork. Whatever the reason, these students are ready to learn and need committed, energetic tutors to assist them.

Come find out how you can help us provide free education to adults in need. Join at us our Learning Center at the Main Branch of the Public Library to learn more during a brief orientation to volunteer opportunities at YES!

Date: Saturday, October 18, 2008
Time: 10:00am-11:30am
Place: YMCA Learning Center
3rd floor, Main Branch, New Orleans Public Library
219 Loyola Avenue (at Tulane Avenue)

Conversational Spanish [03 Oct 2008|02:46pm]

Awesome but cheap haircuts? [03 Oct 2008|01:44pm]

neworleans

[elpajaronegro]
Hi people. I did a search on this before posting but the last relevant entry was a year ago.

I need a haircut something awful. This may be asking for too much, but I want a really great haircut without having to spend a fortune. I can't seem to walk into Stardust without spending at least $250, so I'm looking for some place cheaper. Also, it's gotta be Uptown or in the French Quarter, somewhere I can get to via streetcar/bus. I can't make it to the Aveda school on the days they do cuts, otherwise I would go there. Can y'all recommend some place where I can get a badass haircut for cheap (or cheap-ish)? Thanks.
