It is hard to look for apartments in Providence because the ads are all appealing. The rents are all ridiculously low, and every single description says, "Near Everything."
Of course it's near everything. It's Rhode Island. Walk three blocks and you're in Massachusetts. |

| tuesday morning |
[Feb. 3rd, 2009|12:32 pm] |
freshly baked blueberry muffins, a french press of my new very favorite coffee, finishing off the toe of the first of my new very favorite lace socks, listening to public radio and to my new very favorite band (noah and the whale - thanks erin!). what could be better than this? tuesday has always been my very favorite day.
i'm trying to get a craft night going at my house, probably thursdays but i'm open to other ideas. i've got floor cushions and clean white workspaces and extra yarn and needles and great music for crafting. all i ask is that you bring a beverage or a snack - that way it'll feel like a party but i won't have to cover weekly party-throwing costs on top of planning and cleaning and everything. let me know if you're interested!

i'm watching the first season of the west wing and i'm noticing an interesting trend.
in the christmas episode, who plays bartlett's eleventh hour supreme court justice nominee? edward james olmos, otherwise known as gaff from blade runner.
in the next episode, who plays the chinese ambassador? why it's james hong, otherwise known as the eyeball maker. FROM BLADE RUNNER.
i find this very exciting and can only hope that blade runner cameos continue. |

gooey sticky cinnamon couscous with apples and bananas. i don't usually like gooey (i used to only be able to handle quaker instant oatmeal, but even that has gotten too sticky and mushy for my tastes) but for some reason my serious love of israeli couscous tempers my hatred of gooey things, and this breakfast turns out to be an absolute perfect concoction.
now if only i could get past the 17th century in my attempt to overtake four (four!) norton anthologies, this would be a perfect morning. |

tonight bw and i signed a lease for the most amazing perfect beautiful unique cozy us-like apartment that ever existed. i've never been so excited. this place has so much character.
i see csa dinner parties in our future. i see wine glasses on the back porch at sunset. i see neighborly cookouts and long walks around the blocks and mornings with coffee and newspapers. and so many nights of feeling grateful to be welcome in our own home. |

So as it turns out, I can't keep a secret.
I've received the English Departmental Citation, which is an award given to one faculty-nominated student in each graduating class who demonstrates, I don't know, good English-major qualities. The certificate will be presented to me during the commencement ceremony. I'll be sitting onstage with the faculty and the Ph.D.'s, and I have the option of writing a speech (although I doubt I will, since I'm pretty sure at least 45% of the English class of '08 finds me incredibly irritating and don't want to hear another word from me). I've been trying to downplay the award, but I'm actually pretty geekily excited about it. It's nice to know that my hard work hasn't gone unnoticed, and that i'm not actually as stupid as i feel most of the time. And Goodman is overjoyed, which is adorable and sweet and also makes me very sad to leave this university.
What's weird is, rather than elect one of the faculty members that I'm friends with to present me with the award, or even a faculty member I've taken a class with, the department has chosen Ian Duncan, who I hadn't even heard of until about thirty seconds ago. I hadn't heard of him because he teaches Romanticism and the Victorian novel, both of which I hate! So that's going to be kind of awkward.
But anyway, woo, my teachers think I'm smart. |

mark told me today that alcohol will help me write, so i took his advice and invented a new delicious drink called the gin and tonichee (gin and tonic with lychee) and i had two of them and now i spell "female" either "demale" or "femake" and i think that while "de-male" is a very dangerous way to posit female identity, "femake" definitely has some potential to liberate and recreate female identity and allow our gender to exist in its own linguistic terms. thank you liquor you are going to really help feminism go that extra mile.
someone is walking down my street playing an accordion. i love oakland so much. |
