I hate to say it, but I think Broken Social Scene actually has the ability to create good music.
I really like "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" off of You Forgot It In People. I can't get into most of their stuff, but the layers in "Anthems" are excellent.

I'm having trouble matching my subject and verb tenses today.

11/8/07 10:13 pm - Hope Is a Tattered Flag

Hope is a tattered flag and a dream out of time.
Hope is a heartspun word, the rainbow, the shadblow in white,
The evening star inviolable over the coal mines,
The shimmer of northern lights across a bitter winter night,
The blue hills beyond the smoke of the steel works,
The birds who go on singing to their mates in peace, ware, peace,
The ten-cent crocus bulb blooming in a used-car salesroom,
The horseshoe over the door, the luckpiece in the pocket,
The kiss and the comforting laugh and resolve-
Hope is an echo, hope ties itself yonder, yonder.

The spring grass showing itself where least expected,
The rolling fluff of white clouds on a changeable sky,
The broadcast of strings from Japan, bells from Moscow,
Of the voice of the prime minister of Sweden carried
Across the sea in behalf of a world family of nations
And children singing chorals of the Christ child
And Bach being broadcast from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
And tall skyscrapers practically empty of tenants
And the hands of strong men groping for handholds
And the Salvation Army singing God loves us. . . .

-Carl Sandburg, 1936

Some day you will silence the talkers.
They'll drop in because they saw your name on the wall last week.
Your words will carry weight.
Beware.

It's a good day to face the hard things.

It's just a life story, so there's no climax.
No more new territory, so pull away the IMAX.

CRIPPLE

Once when I saw a cripple
Gasping slowly his last days with the white plague,
Looking from hollow eyes, calling for air,
Desperately gesturing with wasted hands
In the dark and dust of a house down in a slum,
I said to myself
I would rather have been a tall sunflower
Living in a country garden
Lifting a golden-brown face to the summer,
Rain-washed and dew-misted,
Mixed with the poppies and ranking hollyhocks,
And wonderingly watching night after night
The clear silent processionals of stars.

Truth: The Royal Tenenbaums is a masterpiece.

Wes Anderson has yet to make a poor film.
I may just be a sucker for his visuals.

I got new running shoes today.
And I'm going to use my dad's bike until I get one. He can't use it right now even if he wanted to.
So now I'll have something to do when I wake up at 5. =]

Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
I meant it though.

The Schneiders are here. We went to downtown St. Charles today for lunch and to walk around. It's such a ridiculous place. I feel like I should have something profound to say about all the middle-aged women that purchase the crap that is sold there, but all I can say is that it's sad. Everytime I go there I wonder how those places can stay in business and then I see a group of stupid giggly women and remember.

Louis & Clark's was good though. I had a fried eggplant stack sandwich and fries. The eggplant was surprisingly good. David and I are probably going to go to QT, White Castle, and Dairy Queen after dinner because he has none of those things in Orlando. So that could be fun.

Holy fucking shit.
Two summers in a row.
I don't think I'll be as forgiving this time.

This morning I was sitting in the Barnes & Noble cafe and there were two Italian women (possibly a mother & daughter) talking to each other. A few minutes later, I looked up and realized that they were both weeping. I've no idea why because they were exclusively speaking Italian.
But it disturbed me for some reason. Seeing people cry in public, not for joy but for sorrow, is something that I am not used to. It bothers me at funerals too. I think it may be a reflection on middle-class suburban society though. The fear of wearing your real emotions on your sleeve.. it's everywhere.

Hey, how are you?

Good, I'm good. You?

I'm good too. Life's good.

No, it isn't.

One. More. Week.

Prom was alright. The actual prom wasn't that great because it was pretty much just a banquet. I mean, I knew that's all it was going to be, but even so. Kind of boring. The after-party was good though. Near the end I put on LCD Soundsystem and made people dance to it. It lasted four songs and then they put some stupid Napoleon Dynamite song on. Whatevs. It was fun, regardless. I do enjoy not having a date. Maybe next year I'll ask someone though. We'll see. Who knows what my situation will be in a year.

Only need to write a couple more pages on my history paper. It's getting along alright, I guess. I'm sure it'll get a B. Not that I need anything higher. That class has been such a blow off this semester. I got a 102 and a 95 on the last two tests after just reading the chapter the night before we took them.

We have a track meet Thursday afternoon and then Friday is the play and Saturday is another track meet. Tomorrow I'm going to miss the second half of the day for a Chemistry field trip to the crime forensics lab down the street, so that'll be good. But.. man, busy week. The church rummage sale is on Saturday, but I won't be able to help because of track.

Oh, and next week is Joplin, so I'll be gone Wednesday through late Saturday.

GAH, BUSY WEEK. GAH, BUSY MONTH. SUMMER, COME QUICKLY, I'M BEGGING YOU.

Prom is tonight. I don't care about it much, so I didn't rent a suit or anything. I'm wearing my seersucker jacket from freshman year, black pants, a white shirt, and a dark (blue-ish) tie. I still have to go buy shoes at some point.

I'm burning LCD Soundsystem for the after-party and I'm gonna bring my iPod in case we can use that. PARTY PARTY PARTY. LCD Soundsystem is so good. I also downloaded Britney Spears for the event. Hehe.

I really really need to write my paper for History. It's due Wednesday. I have about two paragraphs. Blaaaah.
