News in Iceland

... is piece after piece on what to do if you're about to succumb. The television hammers home information about the suicide hotline, emergency reception at the psychiatric ward, local GPs and talk about how important it is to talk to friends and family in this crisis. Celebrities give little pep talks and stress that no unhappiness is so great and no problem so insurmountable that there is no possible solution, no faint glimmer of hope.

Because the fact is that there is no such thing as national bankruptcy. As long there are people left alive, someone is producing *something*, and so the state, which is its people, can't go bankrupt. And so there is no way out. The idea of living in a slavery of debt and destitution with no hope for the future or their children's future has people killing themselves. Go figure...

tears of a clown?

I don't know if you all know, but I was just palling around on the Rasputina website and noticed that Melora has a new fragrance for sale! Tears of a Clown. I don't actually know if it's new or not since I haven't looked at the merch shop for a while (I didn't realize there's now a Handicraft shop and a regular music shop). They also have the sheet music folios for sale there, which is super exciting! I wouldn't know what to do with one if I had it, but they sure do look awesome.

Anyway, this is probably not news. Just thought I would draw everyone's attention to it! If you're like me, you forget to visit bands' websites for very long periods of times and then when anything changes it is exciting. And also if you are like me, you haven't seen Rasputina live in a long time and you are nostalgic for the good old days!

p.s. Has anyone tried the new fragrance? It's supposedly ginger-mint, and I am interested. I was always scared to try the Rancid Brain Oil. hahaha.

nose over tail

Shooting straight up into the earth's atmosphere until there's only barely a dot visible. The stalls and rolls and sharp nosedives. It must be so much fun to pilot an F-16 or FA-18, the whole blank blue sky your canvas.

I saw the show from the other side this time, getting to the pier as The Patriots' heart was being framed. It was so much more massive close up; it didn't all fit in my shot and I wasn't even zoomed in (though I thought I might have been and was messing with the zoom at one point).

My battery was dying when the Blue Angels came on, so I didn't get the Delta formation. Here's one of the solos though: video )

+31 photos, though none of them came out too great.

Please read, watch & repost;

When you promote a grotesque program like Governor Sarah Palin's Alaska wolf slaughter, you can expect gruesome results.

A startling example: In June, after gunning down 14 adult wolves from a helicopter, officials from Governor Palin's Department of Fish and Game rounded up 14 orphaned wolf pups and methodically shot each one in the head in clear violation of a state law.

State law prohibits the targeting of pups -- a practice known as denning. Maybe that’s why Palin's officials tried to cover it up, making no mention of the brutal pup executions in the state’s June 30th press release on the killings. To date, none of the officials involved in the incident has been held accountable.

Governor Palin could be just a heartbeat from the presidency. Do we want a vice president who champions savagery towards animals?

The restaurant Las Manitas may have closed at the end of August, but at least the cook is still around while they work downstairs on the renovation of the building. It's hard to say when they'll be done with the move and reopen here, but at least there are some free meals for me. The $10+ I would pay for lunch everyday at places in the downtown area would really hurt my wallet.

As far as the non-profit work goes for the La Peña organization, I've been in a form of hibernation and preparation for the future. The office moved to the top floor of this historic building months ago in preparation of the restaurant moving in below. There's also a huge space up here that will stay as an archival area that won't be open to the public. So I definitely have a nice environment to work in. I can hopefully starting doing the programming again by December with the art exhibits, but it is uncertain at this point.

A few people have seemingly bailed on what they see as a sinking ship, but they were the restaurant employees and managers. I even had an assistant helping with La Peña move and organize the office and archival area, but it's just me again. Most days are quiet now. I have a calendar project to finish up and city paperwork to turn in at the moment, but I mostly take my time and enjoy the fact I still have a paycheck. There are even days I can bail out early and call it a day before 5 pm.

I've thought about leaving before throughout the years. My heart has flip flopped about being in and out of the work over time, but the pros outweigh the cons. There's also the fact that there's no one lined up to replace me or there might not be anyone who can be the jack of all trades the job requires. Once we are able to get the programming going again, I'd like to re-establish La Peña and help make it more relevant. Most of the time I've gone through the motions. It's sort of fresh start now and I see the opportunity to move things forward.

Lunch

It's been a quiet morning. After breakfast, my father and siblings went to work (and school) while my mother went down to the church to take care of some things, then speak to my cousin. I'll see her at the church on Sunday. I've just been home writing, and now it's about time for lunch (according to my stomach).

It all feels very normal, like nothing's changed, though everything's changed. Maybe both are true. Everything and nothing has changed.

For the language enthusiasts

The Icelandic word for this economic crisis is "kreppa". When horribly mutilating the English language (as we terrorists are wont to do) by pronouncing Icelandic words hastily forced to meet English grammar, and with the suitable American accent, that word becomes "crap".

There are so many lovely jokes about "the crap" bouncing around this house right now, that I couldn't begin to share them all. But "crap food" and "crap talk" are very common phrases...

Home sweet home

I'm home.

Watching news. Today's news includes:

* Iceland is being classified by the UK government as terrorists. For serious. By doing this they can draw on provisions from the anti-terrorism laws to seize assets. I guess this means I should go blow something up..?

* The last big Icelandic bank has collapsed. It has been taken over by the government.

* The oldest, biggest import company in Iceland is on the verge of going under. My brother works there. I'm worried.

But my dog just opened the door, jumped on the bed and is sleeping by my feet, all grey in the face from age, my little sister has dyed her hair blonde, and my dad's making his world class stroganoff. I'm dead tired from the trip, as I spent twice the amount of time just getting to the Glasgow airport than on the actual flight. But I'm here and it's good to be home, even while the sky is falling.

Crushed

On my way to Iceland tomorrow.
For reasons I won't get into, I need to be with my family right now.

Iceland is such a microcosm.
A tiny nation of 300.000 people, trying to maintain a working civilisation and economy.

When the world has crisis, Iceland has catastrophe...
Everything is falling apart.

The Icelandic economy is crawling half-dead in the sludge, waiting to be put out of its misery. News of national bankruptcy vacillate between impending and postponed. Personally, my own savings, which were invested in stocks, have plummeted by 25%, by about 1300 pounds according to the exchange rate two weeks ago. The current exchange rate changes literally by the hour, so I couldn't give you an exact number. The Icelandic Federal Bank has frozen the Icelandic krona's value at a point that most countries refuse to accept. For my boy, who needs to withdraw his earnings through his Icelandic credit card, the loss of income is enormous, as the bank buys the dollars undervalued and sells it back in pounds at a monstrous difference.

As an example, if you were to buy Icelandic kronas with your 10.000 pounds right now, you would get the buy rate of 162,70 kr per pound. If you then changed your mind and bought pounds back with your kronas, the sale value is 211,98. Meaning you would only get 7.675 pounds back. That's without any banking fees or exchange commissions. Both of these values are based on the current (13:47 on oct. 8, 2008) exchange rate of my commercial bank, and not the international values.

It's an odd experience to enter my credit card number onto a site and be refused.

We are not accepting credit cards from this country. Please contact billing support...

Back to the third world? Just two weeks ago I was a national of a prosperous country. Now, some people are even fearing that one of the big countries will seize the opportunity and just... buy us. I'm not quite that pessimistic. Yet.

It's a funny thing. The Scandinavian countries offer to help, the big relief comes from, believe it or not, Russia. The U.S. refused aid and Britain's more likely to sue us than help out. It's interesting to watch.

I, for one, am just glad that my family owns a house in Norway, and my mother is still a Norwegian citizen.

There is desperation and death in the wake of all this. The general mentality seems to be the typical Icelandic one: Þetta reddast. Loosely translated as "It will work out." Because it always does - the world never ends. Things will work out, one way or the other. That doesn't necessarily mean it will work out well...

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, but she hasn't got a lot to say.

I just drove home from Jack In The Box, at 12:21 am on a Tuesday night, the result of a sudden and ravenous desire for the rarely sought after hamburger/fries combo. The idea of something fried and hot and in my face was explosive and irresistable, bursting into mind as I was plinking through the pilot of Ballykissangel*. So I went, on my own, in the darkiest dark dark dark of an autumn night, in my christmas tree flannel pajamas, and I have to say that the ride home - high beams on, the only person threading through the backroads that lead to our house, licking the salt off of my fingers - was the nicest alone time I've had in a while. "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" was on the radio and the crackling fft!s that broke through as I moved in and out of the appropriate air space just made it seem more intense and in my fizzace. I had it turned up so so loud; I was crawling along John Lennon's trembly, pained vocals as I was crawling over newly tarred roadway. If I could have driven with my face pressed into the faulty speakers (thus leading to my imminent demise or the grisly deaths of countless woodland creatures) - well, you know. I would've.

Instead I just aurally motorboated the boys, then parked in my driveway and waited, solo - except for the flourishing colonies of salt on my knuckles - until the song was over before scuttling back in here, and to this chair, and to you. And to Ireland, circa 1994!

FLASH! fun facts: I do not like mustard or the word "belly". I do like find-a-words and Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses.

(*Lika, this show only makes me think of you! If you ever come across it, you should try a show called Doc Martin. It's about a grouchy, socially inept doctor who moves to a small, quirky town. I guess it's like House meets. Uh. Vicar of Dibley, except without Jesus and/or Hugh Laurie. I feel like you're the only other person I know who may actually enjoy it. I hate doctor dramas, but it's more about the character development. It airs here on multiple PBS feeds, Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings.)

I'm not much of a workout guy. The last time I had a regular workout schedule was in high school. At one time I could even bench press more than my body weight (which wasn't much since I was a little guy under 130 pounds). I haven't had anything regular ever since. I had a little workout routine I did after a finished college and noticed my pants were getting tight due to sitting around and doing nothing while looking for work. Then I got a job and life got busy again.

Going to the gym is too much trouble. A thirty minute workout could end up taking two hours with everything associated with it added on. Plus I also have a bit of a shy yet paranoid egotistical streak where I don't like to do certain things in public because I don't want to bring attention to myself yet think everyone is looking at, thinking, and talking about me. Well, it's not exactly that bad but you've got the idea.

I was able to get a copy of Wii Fit recently. It seems to have me motivated to get active again since I can fit in some yoga, strength training, and aerobics and not have to go further than my living room. After a few days I feel that good soreness setting in. I even found some exercises that hit some areas I never could before. Of course since I work in a building with three flights of stairs that I go up and down on many, many times a day, I don't think my thighs and ass can get much more toned.

I've noticed something about how body weight can fluctuate depending the time of day and how much you've had to eat or drink. I even noticed this before I got the game. Lately I've hovered between 146-149 pounds. Alcohol seems to really change things though. The other weekend I woke up at 142 pounds after a long night of drinking but it went back up to 146 by the end of the day. It goes to show how alcohol dehydrates the body and that I probably also have a lot of water weight. I think I'm carrying around a water balloon inside.

Greetings one and all. I have recently begun a new community called [info]rural_goth for those of us who love all things spooky but live outside of big cities and thusly away from any pre-made "scene." It's a place to discuss the pros and cons of living away from other subcultural groupings as well as a place to post creative endeavors such as photography, videos, and writings.
