Her eyes, gleaming with the window’s watery reflection, dashed from one droplet to another. She followed each liquid gem along its erratic descent with a silent intensity. For minutes of eternity she remained fixed on the dripping network, uninterested with all else around her. It was a game she had created as a child, sitting in her mother’s old wrapper-littered Chrysler, she had first discovered the simple entertainment of a rain-splattered window. It had kept her occupied for that entire afternoon, sitting in the back seat as her mother drove around the city completing miscellanious odd-jobs. Each droplet, she had realized, traveled its own unique path, tailing behind it a stream to preserve the direction of its lifespan. And each droplet seemed to have its own personality – only a few impulsive drops raced eagerly towards their destination. The rest quivered hesitantly, often eaten up by the more aggressive ones. She had found herself lamenting slightly every time a raindrop reached its blurry demise at the bottom of the windowpane, wishing it could have flowed a longer life. Back then this
had only been a game - a source of amusement during a long, rainy ride.

Harriet Lye is a sixteen year-old girl with short brown hair that is unstoppably curly. She is in grade eleven at Unionville High School, which is an arts school - she is in the drama program. She, like most teenage girls, loves shopping, makeup, clothes, and can swear in Latin.
She has dreams of being famous, but has not decided what she will be famous for. She loves music, especially when her friends burn her CDs, and she has been heard singing along loudly to her favorite songs in her car.
Her hazel eyes have seen more than most eyes her age have - they have seen the cancer that was in her blood last year through the hospital microscopes, the tumors and fungus infections in her lungs on the cat scans, the chemotherapy being injected into her tired veins, the clumps of hair on her starchy white pillow that had given up holding on, and they have seen her friends lose the battle and be carried away on stretchers in body bags.
