Backpacking Adventure- Greece, Croatia, Istanbul, Iceland [14 Oct 2008|11:42am]

eurotravel

[prashant_ashoka]

Hey everyone!
I need some critical advice on these following countries. I am a 19 year old film student planning to backpack for 3 months on my own. Not traveling with much money :) (Guess the adventure lies in that!)

Greece
1) Any tips or travel advice on places/islands i should visit?
2) Any recommendations on the very cheapest internal travel options (ferries/buses)?

Istanbul
3) Can anyone advise me on the cheapest possible way to get from Istanbul TO Zagreb, Croatia?
(I dont know if i should take a cheap flight or if there is a train...)

Croatia
4) Anyone to recommend any must-see places in Croatia?
5) I need to get from Croatia to London but i dont know the best way to do this. Anyone know of a train or budget Croatian airlines that fly to London?

Iceland!
6) Agian, anyone to recommend Iceland or some things to do, from their own experiences?
7) Does anyone know the best way to get to Iceland from London?
8) Would greatly appreciate any form of advice at all on Iceland :)

THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE, FOR THE ADVICE!
I'm very excited about the trip. Planning to go from March-May '09:)

lately i work a lot and i am mostly dissatisfied of the temperature of places indoors. it is always too hot, i think i would be so happy if even once it was too cold, but it's always so hot. heat makes me feel so confined. supposedly the way you react to temperature is genetic, so that's why some people like hot temperatures and other people like cold temperatures, because of some biological reason, one feels better to you than the other. i really love cold. it makes me feel awake and alive and like the world is very big. most of the time in the winter, i wear light jackets left open and skirts with kneesocks, still, and even wearing sweaters makes me feel all hot and uncomfortable and itchy. i like the way cold goes through me. it would probably feel nice to be a ghost, i mean, physically anyway. things moving through you.

there's this boy i know, he makes wonderful music and i like to hear him talk about music, the tiny technical things and the arithmetic of sound waves. i am sitting in his basement now, while he produces an album for a band in his studio. i like to know people who know so many things about things i know nothing about. i like to hear people talk and it sounds like a foreign language. i like it when he picks me up from the train and we sit for hours in the parking lot, and we leave the car on because we think we'll drive away soon, but we just sit there and talk and let the gas tank run low. he really gives a shit about me, i don't know, that sounds stupid, but i haven't had that in so long and i forgot what it was like. he honestly gives a damn and he says everything perfect and it's never ever been better than this.

it's not like i'm never sad or scared or anything anymore, of course, and i'm trying not to be stupid and idealistic like usual. i don't socialize much any more and i feel like the friends i do have don't actually like me very much to begin with. i'm thinking i'll probably never have a close group of friends for the rest of my life, i think i'm past the point where that can develop, but it's alright. most of the time socializing isn't worth how sick and anxious i get over it. it's okay, i mean, when it happens. i just get so worked up beforehand.

i don't know, i got distracted, i lost my train of thought. fall makes me listen to middle school music and there's this line, "my mom's god is a woman and my mom she is a witch" that makes me think of middle school, and this boyfriend i had, and he was six feet tall in seventh grade and had hair dyed blue from kool-aid powder. he lived in a tiny pink house at the back of a long driveway off a busy road, surrounded by trees so it felt like a forest, and his mom was a wiccan or something and she gave us henna tattoos and blessing spells and campfires and meteor showers. she drove a big white truck and rescued forest animals from the side of the road and put birds' wings in slings. they were from louisiana. she had long brown tangly hair and i think she attended a unitarian church. i don't miss him or anything but i always wanted to be like her when i grew up.

i always feel so adopted by my boyfriends' families. i am trying to be a forward thinker.

waiting for the train and cold city nights, the square lights of office buildings outside the window going by. walking, i don't know, i'd forget you if i could and i'm sure damn trying. this city belongs to me and not to you. there's a blue-eyed boy who asks, "there is someone who you mean the whole world to, how does that feel?" there's a homeless man in the subway station who plays a guitar to a synthesizer and sings, "silver and gold, diamonds and platinum, wealth untold will pass away."

Blessed with a beautiful son and his "stepfather," ya hey animal husbandry in the nuttiest sense of the termz. BOTHER AND SON.

  • I am on vacation as of tomorrow night! Many of my professors have canceled classes, knowing full well that we won't come, say, seven to ten the night before vacation. I had a LOVELY meeting with this man today, wherein I learned that I am actually Joan Didion. Tomorrow, poetry is canceled, then I get to talk about homosexuality in Denmark, and attend a Linda Alcoff (!!!) lecture on debunking white as a potential 'part of the rainbow.' Frankly, I'm thrilled.
  • Pre-ordered the Domino decorating book and sneakily ordered myself The Offbeat Bride (no, I'm not getting married, but I AM considering getting into wedding photography!)
  • Something I have never really mentioned on here, but I have finally passed the one-month mark and therefore I will announce this: I have quit smoking for good! Hooray, no more cigarette hair girl or premature wrinkles.
  • Also, I found another wrinkle between my eyes the other day. Hooray for never being able to afford glasses and squinting to see for so many years. Ah, I am wrinkled at 21.

  • I had another argumentative moment with boyfriend this morning, again involving the Girl What Done Make Me Nervous, and he assured me that he does, in fact, LOVE me, and does not want to hurt me. Have I mentioned my life is perfect and I'm utterly full of shit? Yeah.
  • I have so many stories from my weekend with Paul's family, mostly involving death metal tow truck operators and lots of Scotch, so I will save all of this for a point later this week where I can write and post a lot of photos. For now, Molls and I are reworking the layout of my bedroom. This week = painting and redecorating. Say goodbye to orange walls!

Travel business in 10 years period. Tour operators.

There are 2 pieces of news for tour operators: as usual one is good and one is a bad one. The good news is that tour operators will still exist in 10 years. And the bad news is that their quantity will decrease. The better chance among mass market operators will have those which will be able to reorganize their technological structure at most and create the comfortable web-sites for their products reservation. I should note that it is not an easy task for the majority of existing tour operators as most of them do not have experience in working with final consumers. It means they do not have experience in constructing appropriate business process.....Read more

Also, I forgot to mention that I sat next to Susan Pevensie (she'll never not be that character to me) on the train the other day:

I wanted to ask if she could introduce me to Mr. Tumnus (the faun, not James McAvoy), but then she would have hated me.

Bob and George [11 Oct 2008|11:08am]

bobdylan

[reginaclarejane]
I was just perusing through George Harrison's "autobiography", I*Me*Mine and he talks about his song, Behind That Locked Door... (p. 206)

"Behind That Locked Door was when Bob Dylan was playing at the Isle of Wight soon after his Nashville Skyline album. I wrote this song about him:

Why are you still crying
Your pain is now through
Please forget those teardrops
Let me take them from you
The love you are blessed with
This world's waiting for
So let out your heart please, please
From behind that locked door...

It was a good excuse to do a country tune with pedal steel guitar."

I don't want to get all sentimental or mushy, but gosh, that's lovely... Bob and George seemed to have this tentative connection with each other and I like that George felt the need to write a song for Bob- or about him anyway...

I can't help but feel these lyrics somehow still apply today...

Appearing on The Simpsons means you have made it.

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová have lent their voices to their own characters in the cult cartoon, The Simpsons. The couple should appear in an 'Irish' episode.Irglová and Hansard have joined celebrities like the Rolling Stones, U2, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, R.E.M. and Johnny Cash. Like these music stars, the Czech-Irish couple are to appear in an episode of The Simpsons.

During their US tour in early October, Irglová and Hansard dubbed their own characters in Los Angeles for one of the episodes of the planned 21th series of the cult cartoon. A source close to the couple confirmed the information to the portal iDnes.cz on Wednesday. The episode should be broadcast in the Czech Republic in about a year and a half [Mod note: I have no clue what that translates to in terms of when this episode will show in North America]

Warning: episode spoilers lie within! )

(I'm on the front page-- the "Hot!" page-- of lookbook.nu right now.... #19... with this photo. hee hee, the styleless wonder strikes again!)

I sat today and watched one of my favorite poets of all time absolutely shred my work, then laughed all the way to the café with the professor and other students (all four of us in this upper-level workshop). Oh, my poetry is only what it is, I realized this semester that I really do write for myself but maybe soon I will publish a little chapbook of my poetry, I could print it for free on the campus printers, staple it and sell it for postage maybe.

Anyway, I ate potato soup, which was incredible (I love that the tiny café in downtown Canton now advertises when specific foods are, in fact, vegan!) and then went back to campus, where I found out that I got a 4.0 on my Sexualities midterm. I am a pro at sexing. Proof positive. We took some pictures on the roof (see above), and now we are going to the grocer's to pick up ingredients for dinner.

Tomorrow we travel downstate with flowered suitcases aloft, stop and have lunch with my mother and brother, then go downstate where I will say the how-de-do with Paul's parents for the first time ever. I hope they do not see me only as a tattooed ninny in suspenders. I will be very polite and put a napkin in my lap when I eat, and I will not sneeze in their vichysoisse or rub raw chicken all over their refrigerator handles or stick my fingers in their light sockets.

I wish you all a wonderful end to a wonderful week!

I think when it comes to this election, as important as selecting a presidential candidate is, so is spending a lot of time focusing on our state's propositions. I've been trying really, really hard to fully read and understand each one in time for November 4.

One that has a lot of attention right now, and specifically my attention, is Proposition 8. In a nutshell, voting YES on Prop. 8 restores the term of "marriage" within our states laws to require a man and a woman. Currently, gay and lesbian couples can marry after 4 supreme court judges found that denying same sex couples the ability to marry was unconstitutional. Voting NO on Prop. 8 will keep the current system of equality within marriage in California.

It seems to be a pretty sensitive subject for a lot of people. My neighborhood is littered with signs for and against Prop. 8. I've been trying to get some feedback from some of my friends, co-workers, and students in my classes and so far it is always divided by ONE factor: Religion.

I really want to find someone who is planning on voting "Yes" on Prop. 8 that wont give me a reason why that I've already heard. I think this is a pretty interesting Proposition and I think it might be the topic of an upcoming paper I will write.

So please give me your opinion: What do YOU believe is right? Will you vote "Yes" or "No"?

somehow i won the not-spending-money bet between shawn, lauren, and i? sweeeeet, free dinner for me! it was really hard, too, because monday afternoon, lauren and i went to king of prussia to get her iphone fixed and i almost caved a million times.

yesterday i cried in the middle of my law class because i was so frustrated. i am not okay with school right now and even though overall i'm doing fine, i'm really not pushing myself the way i should. i'm so unmotivated. probably because i hate my major. yay. anyway, the day got better because lauren and i went over to the boy's house where we made snacks, watched a movie (broken flowers, it was super good!), and were prompted with the question of who in the house we would most want to sleep with. the boys all picked, which was funny, but we refused to answer and conferenced later. we found that we had a tossup between the same two! nuts.

went to class this morning and spent most of the afternoon dealing with the 5 shirts i tie-dyed this weekend. never doing that again, it's waaay too much work! kingdom for dinner again tonight. i should probably stop going there so much.

so not stoked on having class tomorrow.

Another Europe trip [08 Oct 2008|01:13pm]

[uepianogirl]
My husband and I are planning another trip to Europe, probably in mid-May. This time around we are thinking Prague, Munich, Venice, and maybe somewhere else. We were really interested in Ireland, though that is definitely out of the way;) Another thought is that the university we both attended is having an alumnae reunion in Grantham, England in June/July, so we have signed up to receive info about that. If that comes through, we would be going at the end of June (instead of May) and would probably do the Prague, Munich, and Venice thing after attending part of the reunion. However, we're not sure exactly what we're going to do but we were wanting to look into other cities that aren't as far from Prague, Munich, and Venice. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on the order to visit the cities (as far as which is cheapest to fly into, trains and flights running between cities, etc.) would be greatly appreciated!

I think this is my first or second time posting on this community so hello! :) I attended the Austin City Limits music festival in Austin, TX this year, where the Swell Season played and then did an aftershow gig the next night! Both performances were absolutely amazing, though there were a few technical difficulties during the festival performance.

The aftershow gig on the 27th was spine-tingling, though this was the type of crowd that didn't really: a) sing or b) stand, so that kinda sucked for me as I like to sing along during Swell Season shows (like at Central Park). In any case, I was able to get Glen's setlist (yay!) and also got to meet him after the show!

Before the Goldrush, ft. The Swell Season [08 Oct 2008|10:01am]

[dolcianiblows]
The Swell Season make an appearance on a new compilation project entitled "Before the Goldrush", contributing music alongside Rebecca Elliot, Carey Ott, Vandaveer, Neko Case, Tracy Bonham, Okkerville River, and others. They appear on the album in a live performance of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic".

The proceeds from the digital album, which is up for sale on Amazon, all go towards Teach For America, "a nonprofit group known for its innovative work towards ending inequity in educational opportunities for children":

Teach for America recruits outstanding young teachers and professionals who commit to teaching two years in urban and rural public schools to ensure that students in America’s lowest income communities receive the education they deserve. These teachers then become part of the Teach for America alumni, using the knowledge and experience they’ve gained in the trenches to continue working, in education and various sectors, to bring equality of educational opportunities so that all children have a chance to learn and succeed.
