Know where I can find a yellow tracksuit for Halloween? [October 14th, 2008 at 1:40am]

vancouver

[destructocheese]
Halloween's coming up and I can't find a yellow tracksuit (or something similar) for my costume! (The Bride from Kill Bill, fyi.) Hell, even yoga clothes would probably work, but I just need a matching yellow top and pants I can sew black stripes on. I scrambled around The Bay and found nothing, and I've also tried a few Salvation Army locations and the Party Bazaar. Any tips besides 'pick a different costume?'

Voting in Vancouver East [October 13th, 2008 at 10:17pm]

Dear voters of Vancouver East,

Could someone please tell me the address of a polling station in the Main and Broadway area? I've tried using the Elections Canada search engine, but it keeps telling me "Your address did not identify a polling station" for some reason. I also can't seem to locate my handy voter card. I'm sure there's someone who lives in my neighbourhood who can point me in the right direction... thanks!

Last night I got a little baby chinchilla as a friend for my older male, Horatio.

I only have a few pictures cause he's a bit camera shy right now, but I'd like to introduce my little 4 month old standard, Chandler.

I hope to have more pictures of the little guy soon.

Hi, my name is May McDonald and I am totally blind. I currently live in Alberta but will be moving to Vancouver hopefully next summer. I have a 4 year old German Shepherd for my guide dog who comes from the Seeing Eye and her name is Wynter. I also have two kids, a 4 year old daughter named Kahlan and a 9 year old son named Alexander. I really hope to make new friends here.

I'm extremely nervous about my move over the summer. I'll also be visiting Vancouver in 19 days for about 2 weeks. This way I can start to learn my way around BC and get lost a few times, lol.

Again, hope to get to know more of you.

Has anyone tried the West Coast College massage clinic? (as a customer, not student) [October 13th, 2008 at 6:14pm]

vancouver

[celdazero]

Back in August I tried a professional / semi-professional massage for the first time, at the Utopia Academy near Stadium Skytrain. It was quite good and definitely worth the $40. However, I decided that I want to try some other places to compare the quality. And since it's been two months, I figure I can afford $40 or so every two months.

I can't afford the $70-80 that a regular RMT would charge, so I'm planning to try out some other massage schools. I found out about the West Coast College of Massage Therapy : http://www.collegeofmassage.com/newwestminster/

They are a little farther away, but seem to be slightly cheaper and accessible by SkyTrain, so doesn't seem too bad.

Can anyone comment on the quality of their massages? I'm aware that because it's done by students, quality will differ, but any feedback would help.

Thanks!

Eating at SFU 2: Ichibankan Express [October 13th, 2008 at 3:07pm]

Hopefully everyone's having a great long weekend!  I know I was until I remembered the wretched taste that was Ichibankan Express at SFU.  Now it's all going downhill.  (Can you tell how this review is going to go?)

After 5 consecutive hours of class and 7 without eating, I was feeling well, a bit hungry.  So I actually decided to SKIP my workout so I could tend to my beckoning stomach.  Ichibankan was the restaurant of choice that Thursday.  (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of the front of the restaurant, but it's the one beside The Renaissance Cafe at the Cornerstone area).

I managed to get there during the off-peak time of hour as usually, it's the most crowded mofo I've ever seen, especially right after classes.  I stood in the restaurant for about two minutes, looking up at the "menu" to see what might be a tantalizing choice only to notice that everything had gone up in price by $0.50.  "OK, well at least it wasn't more than that," I thought to myself.  I ended up ordering the Tempura udon for $6.00 (that price includes tax as well), received my number and sat to wait for my meal.

I'm sitting.. sitting.. sitting.. gee, you'd think it'd come within I dunno, 10 minutes, especially since it wasn't crowded, and considering that it's an express location.  Nope, it took 15 minutes for my order to come out.  Granted, I did order udon, so I didn't mind too much as long as my order was going to be good.

I picked up my order and went back to my seat, sat down, and looked at it.  "Hmm... not bad, looks pretty good.  Good portion size for $6 compared to other Japanese restaurants."

Hey, not bad right?  WRONG.  W TO THE FREAKING RONG, WRONG!!! Cause this is what it REALLY looked like:

Yeah, that mush is tempura.  Disgusting.  Keep in mind that this is when my order JUST came out.  This is what my tempura udon usually looks like if I leave it out for 6 hours.

When I picked up the tempura with my chopsticks, all the batter fell off right away.  The soup was hot (I'm assuming it was microwaved for a bit) and the actual udon noodles had a descent consistency (chewy, yet soft).  The soup however was MSG-y-- it was so salty, I felt thirsty after 3 spoonfuls (and look at the size of that spoon).  Needless to say, the tempura was disgusting.  They gave me one prawn, one yam, one carrot and one zucchini.  By the time I had finished eating the prawn tempura, all the other batter of the other tempura had fallen off by themselves and combined with my soup to make some sort of thick, aggregated lipid-complex, not too different from the way a bunch of liposomes might look.

By the end of it, I had this beautiful site to look at:

The only tempura I ate was the prawn.  I tried a bit of the yam but it was mush.  Like, babyfood-mush.

For Ichibankan Express, I give the udon 1/5, only becuase the noodles were cooked okay.  I've never had the take-out sushi and I've heard that people are generaly satisfied with it, which is why I only rated the udon.

This place is WAY overrated and is extremely lucky that it is the only Japanese resturant (aside from that other one near Bubble World) at SFU.  In my opinion, if it weren't for these factors, this place would go out of business in a heart beat. Gross.  If you're really craving a tempura udon, I beg of you not to go here.  It'll be the worst $6 you've ever spent in your life.

I adopted this adorable little girl yesterday and she is in dire need of an appropriate name. She came with the name of Nell, which I am not terribly fond of. I wanted to share her beauty with you and would appreciate any suggestions for a name. I hope to take more and much cuter pictures of her in the near future.
