I realized I never finished that gaming meme thing. Oh well!

I forgot to post about this but a few weeks back, right after Christmas, I went with a friend and her boyfriend to Video Games Live. I had always wanted to see the show, but I just never got around to it. But here I went with no plans at all until she asked me to go with them, which was the day of. As luck would have it I was able to buy a seat right next to them that was still free. And they were good seats too!

So how was the show? It was amazing. Seriously, I was expecting it to be good, but I was completely blown away. They didn't play everything I wanted to hear (for example, there was no BioShock, Silent Hill, or Sonic, all pieces they've been known to play) but I understand they've acquired so much music over the years that it would be impossible for them to fit everything into the show. And really, it just gives me more incentive to see it again.

What did they play? Well, a lot of stuff. They opening with a "Classic Arcade Medley" where they played music from Pong, Frogger, Ghouls n Ghosts, Duck Hunt, and so much more. My favorite pieces of the night were probably the Mega Man medley (which covered the intro music from Mega Man 2, the title screen theme to Mega Man 3, and Wily's Fortress from Mega Man 2) and the Street Fighter medley (which covered Guile, Ryu, and Ken's themes). OH YEAH! And a Zelda flute medley played by a cute girl dressed as Link named Laura Intravia. That shit was amazing.

Some special guests were there as well. Laura Intravia, who I mentioned before, was a special guest though she's been on Video Games Live several times prior. There was also Brentalfloss who you might know from his YouTube videos of giving classic video game themes lyrics, such as Mega Man 3 and Dr. Mario. He performed a live song to the water theme from Super Mario Bros. Also, while I have never played the games before, the composer of the original Castlevania soundtrack was there for the Castlevania piece. She apparently lives in Jersey now!

Even the pieces from games I had never played before were amazing, and there were quite a few of them. And they ended the night singing Still Alive from Portal. I loved the experience so much that I bought a t-shirt, CD, and Blu-Ray of the show. I hope to go again sometime soon, especially knowing they're working on pieces for Pokemon, Phoenix Wright, and Katamari Damacy.

Whether you're a gamer or not, look into going to Video Games Live. It's an experience like no other.

Someone should totally make an all-Pokemon version of a Christmas Carol

My friend and I have been putting far too much thought into this concept.

EBENEZER MEOWTH - Meowth is a prick so he has to be Scrooge.

PIKACHU CRATCHIT - Meowth's faithful employee, of course.

TINY PICHU - SPOILERS: HE DIES.

WOBBUFFET MARLEY - WOOOOOOOOOOOOOBBUFETT!

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST - Mew is such an angelic Pokemon and Past is usually the most innocent looking of the spirits. So Mew would be perfect, no?

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT - SLOWKING? BUT SNORLAX IS BIG AND FAT WHY NOT MAKE IT HIM? Yeah, but Present needs to be someone who can talk just so he can say "I SEE A POKEBALL WITHOUT AN OWNER" when Scrooge asks about Tiny Tim's health. And Slowking seems like a nice fit.

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET TO COME - Yes. Ghost. The ghost you see before you get the Sliph Scope. Why? Because it's it perfect and you know it is. Future is always the most mysterious and disturbing of the spirits and Ghost fits that role perfectly.

FRED - Scrooge's nephew. Why? Because Charmander just seems like he's friendly enough to keep inviting Uncle Meowth to Christmas dinner even if Meowth is a raging douche. How a Charmander and Meowth could be nephew and uncle? IT'S A MYSTERY!

WOOPER FEZZIWIG - Because I could picture him dancing during the Fezziwig party scene. And because Wooper is awesome.

BELLE - Scrooge's girlfriend from the past. Come on, it would have to be Meowzy from "Go West Young Meowth". It's perfect.

FAN - Scrooge's sister. Jigglypuff was the first to come to mind.

THE PORTLY GENTLEMEN - You know those two guys that come to try to get a donation from Scrooge? Just picture these two with top hats and monocles and suddenly it makes all the sense in the world.

PIPLUP CRATCHIT - Pikachu's wife. Just so we don't have two Pikachus.

If I had the patience or time I would totally make this into an entire flash cartoon.

HOT DOG!

So I landed my first voice over role. What that is? I'm not exactly sure. All I know it's some video a girl is making about a character she plays in a circus freak show (she walks on broken glass and eats fire) and, after auditioning, I have been given the role of the narrator. I don't know how many other people auditioned, but it feels pretty awesome to land the role. Could this be the start of something more? I guess only time will tell.

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2 - SNES - 1995

Is DKC2 my favorite classic game ever? Probably not but, like I said in several other posts, picking just one game for a lot of these categories is near impossible. But with the recent release of Donkey Kong Country Returns I've had DKC on the mind and in particular I've been reminiscing about Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. DKC2 is, hands down, the pinnacle of the Donkey Kong Country series. It took everything that made the original DKC great and made it better. The level design was great, the graphics still look incredible, and it has one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time. My brother and I would sit around playing this gem for hours (I would be Diddy and he would be Dixie) as we worked together to clear the levels, smash the enemies, and take down Captain K. Rool. While some my feel the original DKC hasn't exactly aged well, DKC2 has stood the test of time and remains one of the greatest platformers ever made. It's a shame it was followed by the lackluster DKC3 and DK64 but from what I've seen Donkey Kong Country Returns is the sequel DKC2 deserved.

Day 1 - Very first video game.
Day 2 - Your favorite character.
Day 3 - A game that is underrated.
Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game.
Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
Day 6 - Most annoying character.
Day 7 - Favorite game couple.
Day 8 - Best soundtrack.
Day 9 - Saddest game scene.
Day 10 - Best gameplay.
Day 11 - Gaming system of choice.
Day 12 - A game everyone should play.
Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times.
Day 14 - Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper.
Day 15 - Post a screenshot from the game you're playing right now.
Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes.
Day 17 - Favorite antagonist.
Day 18 - Favorite protagonist.
Day 19 - Picture of a game setting you wish you lived in.
Day 20 - Favorite genre.
Day 21 - Game with the best story.
Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you.
Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style.
Day 24 - Favorite classic game.
Day 25 - A game you plan on playing.
Day 26 - Best voice acting.
Day 27 - Most epic scene ever.
Day 28 - Favorite game developer.
Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn't like, but ended up loving.
Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

Yeah, yeah, I know

I kind of neglected this meme thing for the past few days. I have an excuse though! I've been busy. What with Thanksgiving, work, friends, and Christmas shopping. But that's okay because I'm here now. YEAH!

KIRBY'S EPIC YARN - WII - 2010

Really, I could have picked a million things for this. A game having great graphics and a great art style are two completely different things and they can be great for different reasons. I could have gone with Resident Evil 5, Okami, Little Big Planet, ilomilo, Super Mario Galaxy, BioShock--really, there's no end to what I could have picked.

Now, I don't know if I'd say Kirby's Epic Yarn has the best art style ever, but since I just finished playing it and it's fresh in my mind I've decided to roll with it. Kirby's Epic Yarn is one of the most charming looking games I've seen in a long time due largely to the yarn motif it uses. Much like Paper Mario makes everything look like it's made of paper crafts, Kirby's Epic Yarn takes the world of Kirby and makes it out of yarn, felt, and patches and it works beautifully. It's simplistic, but it works so well I wouldn't have it any other way. If I'm not mistaken, I believe all the yarn effects were made using real yarn that they photographed and put into the game as the character sprites. This is the kind of game that really makes me wish the Wii were in HD.

Oh man! Almost Thanksgiving!

Or I guess it IS Thanksgiving since it's 1:30AM. Nothing really exciting to report today so let's do the meme. CONTROVERSY!

BANJO TOOIE - N64 - 2000

Ask just about any Banjo fan their favorite game of the Banjo-Kazooie series and just about all of them will tell you Banjo-Tooie. But not me. Fuck Banjo-Tooie. Now, let me explain! Banjo-Kazooie, to me, was the perfect 3D platformer. Everything about it just felt so right. The controls were tight, the level design was fantastic, the collecting was kept to a minimum and managed to be enjoyable, and the worlds we just the right size. If I were to make a list of my favorite 3D platformers of all time you can bet Banjo-Kazooie would be on that list somewhere.

A couple years after Banjo-Kazooie came Banjo-Tooie, the sequel. It promised to be bigger and better than Banjo-Kazooie ever was. Well, it certainly was bigger, but better? I don't think so. And this becomes Banjo-Tooie's most glaring problem: it seems to be under the impression that "bigger is better". The levels in Banjo-Tooie are huge, that's for sure. But they feel like they're huge just for the sake of making them huge. There's no reason for it. Most of the levels are huge open areas that take forever to travel across. Even the hub world was far larger than it needs to be. Sure, the levels LOOK nice but that matters little when they aren't any fun to play through. Not to mention it's way too easy to get lost in the levels.

The Banjo and Kazooie separation gimmick got old fast. And it added too much shit to collect to the point where it felt like a chore.

Think I should give Banjo-Tooie another chance? That's the thing. I've tried. I have tried playing through Banjo-Tooie on at least three separate occasions. And each of them come to a screeching halt due to one level in particular: Grunty Industries. Grunty Industries has to have one of the worst level designs I've ever dealt with in a platformer. I constantly get lost, I never know where to go, practically every Jiggy there is a pain in the ass to get, and it's a world that is just so un-fun I lose any desire to play through the game any further.

I'm not saying Banjo-Tooie is a BAD game. The graphics are great, the humor is chuckle worthy, and the soundtrack is fantastic. But why Banjo fans consider THIS to be the pinnacle of the Banjo franchise I will never understand.

AND SINCE I'M FEELING CYNICAL, HERE'S ANOTHER GAME!

SUPER PAPER MARIO - WII - 2007

I had no reason not to believe Super Paper Mario was going to be anything less than phenomenal. How could you go wrong? The original Paper Mario and especially The Thousand-Year Door were some of the greatest RPGs I've ever played. The previews of Super Paper Mario looked amazing. Transforming into a giant 8-bit Mario and tearing shit up? Yes please! So you bet your keister when Super Paper Mario came out I had no problem slapping down $50 to play it. And what did I get? A Paper Mario game that was pretty... mediocre.

Now I'm not saying Super Paper Mario is a bad game because it isn't. But compared to the first two? Yeah, this one doesn't even come close. First off, while I admire what they were going for, the RPG/platforming hybrid gameplay does not work. It just makes the game come off as feeling confused about its identity. It doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. The NPCs are also some of the most ugly, boring, and poorly designed I've ever seen especially compared to the imaginative and great looking ones from previous Paper Mario games. The story is good but the writing isn't nearly as funny. You have no attachment to your party members who are reduced to boring squares and triangles with no personality to speak of. The game is also easy. Now Paper Mario has never been all that difficult but Super Paper Mario is insultingly easy. Is it even possible to die in this game? I don't think I had a boss fight that lasted any longer than three minutes and even that's pushing it.

And one of my biggest problems with Super Paper Mario? The "paper" mechanic is used horribly. In the other Paper Mario games the paper style added greatly to the game's charm. Mario would find hidden doors underneath a slip of paper, Mario could roll up or slip under doors, when you went to bed Mario slid underneath the covers--all these things are gone in Super Paper Mario. Instead they went for a more "techy" style that works poorly. You wouldn't even know it was a Paper Mario game if the word "paper" wasn't plastered on the cover.

I didn't hate Super Paper Mario but it has got to be one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced with a game. The only reason I haven't sold it is because I own the first two games and would prefer to have the whole series.

I'M A GOLDEN GOD!

Neglected this again the past few days. Sorry, I was busy with work, partying until 4am with friends, and getting all the achievements in Super Meat Boy. I'm pretty damn proud of myself.

SILENT HILL: SHATTERED MEMORIES - WII - 2009

I was planning on doing BioShock for this one but that's so obvious. Everyone knows BioShock has a great story. So instead I decided to go with something else entirely: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Shattered Memories may not exactly be "scary" but the story it tells is fantastic. Being a reimagining of the original Silent Hill, the story starts off quite similar: You are Harry Mason and you've crashed your car. When you come to you realize your daughter, Cheryl, is missing and so the search begins. But that's where the similarities between Shattered Memories and the original Silent Hill end. Shattered Memories is its own game with its own story.

Shattered Memories, as the game states when you boot it up, is playing you as much as you play it. Story elements and other such things will change depending on choices you make, things you look at, how much time you spend wandering around, etc. I'm not going to say it's perfect but it does things no game has ever done before.

What makes the story so great? Well, you'll have to play the game to find out. If you have a Wii go and buy this game right now. It's also available on the PS2 but I highly suggest the Wii version as it looks so much better and it's one of the few Wii games were the motion controls really benefit the game. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is one of the most immersive games I've ever played and part of that is due to how well the Wii controls are implemented into the game. It's not your average Silent Hill game. In fact it probably has less "Silent Hill-ish" elements than Silent Hill 4 did. But Shattered Memories ranks right up there with Silent Hill 3 as one of my favorite games in the series.

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

a group that dined at the restaurant I work in ordered a $10,000 bottle of wine. no joke.

Nothing exciting to talk about today. I have work at 8:30 so let's just get to the meme!

PLATFORMERS

You know, I've grown to love so many gaming genres that picking a favorite is impossible. Really it just comes down to what I'm in the mood for. But for the sake of this post, if I had to pick just one, I figure I can't go wrong with the classic platformer. Platformers are what I grew up on and I still love them today. There's just something magical about jumping from platform to platform that I can't really explain. Some of the greatest games ever made are platformers: Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 3, Super Mario World, Kirby Super Star, Super Metroid, DuckTales, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country 2, Banjo-Kazooie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles--really, I could go on and on listing great platformers. It's sad that they aren't as plentiful as they once were. Yes, there's Super Mario Galaxy, but beyond that the platforming genre isn't seeing nearly as much love as it used to. Thankfully platforming games are becoming much more plentiful from the downloadable games front. I thank Mega Man 9 for not only being a brilliant game but bringing new life to the platformer. And Xbox Live Arcade has provided some of the best platformers I've played in years.

Platformers are a timeless classic. Let's not let this genre die.

JOBS

Yeah, I should look for a new job. My dishwashing job is probably going to require me to work on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. That's just crazy. Working on Christmas!? That's all kinds of wrong!

FLOWER BUD VILLAGE/FORGET-ME-NOT VALLEY/ETC - HARVEST MOON SERIES

You know, a lot of games I play may SEEM like a cool place to live at first, but they've got some serious drawbacks that would make living there not very appealing. Silent Hill? Yeah, sure, I'd love to get lost in fog for hours, have every door I try to open have a broken lock, and getting raped by monsters. Resident Evil? Forget dealing with zombies and giant mutated alligators, just imagine really having to use the bathroom only to find out you can't get in there until you obtain the Helmet Key. Pokemon? Please, you wouldn't be able to so much as go for a walk without getting attacked by a Pidgey. Even the Mushroom Kingdom would be a pretty fucked up place to live, what with the constant attacks from Bowser and the only eligible women being taken by portly plumbers or living in outer space. Or being Birdo.

But the world of Harvest Moon? I could dig it. I love the Harvest Moon games, even though I haven't really played the last few installments in the series. In the past when I've played Harvest Moon games (primarily Harvest Moon 64 and A Wonderful Life) I could get lost for hours playing the simple farming sim. Farming is hard work, sure, but in the world of Harvest Moon it's easy. Plus the townsfolk are all very charming and likable. And nothing bad ever happens there: no attacks, no murders, no monsters. Just a very peaceful and enjoyable place to live. Not to mention getting married and raising a child is ridiculously cheap. So, yeah, I think I'd like living in the world of Harvest Moon.

I actually came REALLY close to picking Toronto, Canada just so I could hang out with Scott Pilgrim and His Amazing Friends but that's probably sort of cheating kind of.

I wanna be diiiiiiirty!

I'm thinking of poking around craigslist and trying out for any voice acting jobs I can find or maybe even acting in general. What have a got to lose? I don't get picked then I don't get picked. If I do it could be a good way to get my foot in the door. YEAAAAAAH! Also, I tried out Kinect the other day at Best Buy. I was actually really impressed. I would have tried it more if weren't, you know, out in public.

HEATHER MASON - SILENT HILL 3

Heather is my favorite protagonist from Silent Hill (followed closely by the Shattered Memories version of Harry Mason). The reason? She feels the most real. Her reactions feel genuine and she actually reacts to the shit happening around her whereas characters like the original Harry and James kind of just roll with it and act like it's normal. And then there's Henry from Silent Hill 4 who... doesn't react at all. But Heather, she actually comes across as a real person. Even the little things like inspecting different things. In most games if you inspected something like, say, a mannequin it would normal just say "It's a mannequin." but Heather gives you a little peak into her inner thoughts and actually makes comments about the things you look at so it would be along the lines of "It's a mannequin. I hate these things. They've always creeped me out ever since I was a kid." Little things like this really help you get a feel for the character. She also looks real. She's not all dolled up, she's not wearing skimpy clothes, she doesn't have huge breasts. In fact, she comes off as bit homely looking--scraggly hair, freckles, bags under her eyes--but I actually feel like these things make her more attractive. Picking a favorite protagonists, like almost all these categories, is impossible for me. But Heather is definitely up there.

WOOPS

Kind of neglected this for a few days there. Sorry, I was busy with stuff! Nothing exciting. Just work/work/family/friends. Yeah, LET'S CONTINUE!

GIYGAS - EARTHBOUND

Giygas is one of the most terrifying antagonists in video game history. He isn't just evil, he IS evil. The pure embodiment of evil itself. He's also one of the most tragic villains in gaming with a back story that would be far too long to sum up here. Giygas is, as Pokey puts it, "an almight idiot". Giygas doesn't know what he's doing. He has no sense of right or wrong. He just is. He's also invincible. He cannot be killed. The only way to defeat him in EarthBound is through the power of prayer. It might sound cheesy but it makes the fight one of the most memorable I've ever seen in a game. Oh, and did I mention that Giygas' dialogue is based on rape? His lines coming from the victim. As you battle Giygas he will cry out things like "It hurts..." and "It's not right... not right... not right..." and cry and scream in pain. Giygas doesn't even have a battle theme, really. Throughout most of the fight all you hear is fucked up noises, static, and white noise. In the first part of the fight against him Giygas is trapped inside a device known as "The Devil's Machine" where he takes the form of a giant head of Ness. Giygas is fucking crazy. Since most of you will probably never play EarthBound, I'll go ahead and post a video of the battle.

<lj-embed id="29" />

This was actually hard to pick because I realize I've played a LOT of games with great antagonists. Albert Wesker, Andrew Ryan, Pokey Minch, and even Bowser are all worthy contenders to be considered my favorite. Really, for almost all these entries there are probably a handful of other choices I had in mind.

It's not so bad being dead like me~

Hey, you know what were good TV shows that I discovered thanks to the wonders of Netflix? Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies. If you have Netflix you should watch them both. They're wonderful and currently streaming.

You can skip the Dead Like Me movie though. It's shit.

I was trying to avoid repeating games I've already brought up but for this I will make an exception.

KILLER7 - GC - 2005

Not everyone may fully understand the plot of Killer7, but there's no denying that the cutscenes are brilliant. The cutscenes of Killer7 already have a unique style with the usual in-game graphics but several others have their own style as well. Perhaps it would be better for me to show you some of these cutscenes rather than just talk about them, so here are a few examples of the amazing, disturbing, and crazy cutscenes to be found in Killer7. The cutscenes have some spoilers, but you won't really understand what's going on anyway.

<lj-embed id="25" />

<lj-embed id="26" />

<lj-embed id="27" />

And as an added bonus, here's a dumb (and the only) AMV I made a long while back using Kiss Me Deadly covered by Reel Big Fish.

<lj-embed id="28" />

Yeah, go play Killer7.

It's on like Donkey Kong!

I got both Scott Pilgrim and Toy Story 3 on Blu-Ray today. Scott Pilgrim bombed in the box office so if you didn't see it you are a horrible person and should feel bad. In more tragic news, the wife of a teacher of mine from high school was involved in a car accident a passed away. He's a great guy who loves his family so I send my condolences to him and his two children. Also, someone from my brother's graduating high school class died after overdosing on heroin. Shit, man.

SUPER MEAT BOY - XBLA - 2010

Super Meat Boy is a game where you play as a cube made of meat whose girlfriend, Bandage Girl, is kidnapped by an evil fetus in a jar wearing a top hat and monocle named Dr. Fetus. And it is the most ridiculous game ever made. Don't let the cute look fool you, this game is balls to the wall difficult. This should give you a good idea of how difficult this game is: I've died more than 12,000 times. And I haven't even beaten the game yet. The other night I was attempting to unlock a hidden character in one of the game's "Warp Zones". It consisted of three levels. I was in that Warp Zone for over two hours. Look up videos to see how crazy this game is. However, even though the game is absurdly difficult, it is SO much fun. The soundtrack is also amazing. If you have a 360 get this game NOW. It's on sale for 800 MSP ($10) for a limited time only and will soon go up to 1200 MSP. If you don't have a 360, fear not, for it will be heading to Steam on PC/Mac soon and later this year will be available on WiiWare.
The last Metroid is in captivity...

So last night I went to Play N Trade and bought myself a copy of Super Metroid still with its box, manual, and even the Nintendo Power poster promoting Star Fox. It was only $20 so I figured "why the hell not?"

Also, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is on sale this week for 400 MSP ($5). If you didn't already get it for $10, $5 is a steal. Buy it RIGHT NOW.

It's art based on BioShock 2 drawn my Johnen Vasquez, creator of Invader Zim and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Apparently he's a big fan of BioShock. WHO KNEW? I love this because of how crazy, creepy, and fucked up everything looks. Especially that Little Sister! :O

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

blah

The Nintendo World Store had a grand reopening party today celebrating the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. They had a cake, Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, and everything. I potentially could have gone but I had to work. Poo!

At least Amazon finally got that Chuck Greene Avatar code out.

RESIDENT EVIL - GC - 2002

Hands down my favorite game in the Resident Evil franchise. I love RE4 and RE5 as much as the next guy, but REmake was really the perfect Resident Evil game. I've probably played through it so many times I could do it with my eyes closed (of course, I could probably say the same about a lot of games including RE4). REmake was just the perfect Resident Evil game. The atmosphere was incredible, the story was engaging (particularly loved the character of Lisa Trevor), and the graphics still amaze me even if all the backgrounds are pre-rendered images. It was my first game in the Resident Evil franchise and remains my favorite. I still love the Resident Evil games we have today but I long for one to come out that captivated me like REmake did.

WAAAAAAAARP ZOOOOOOOOONE

Super Meat Boy is the most frustrating game ever made but holy shit do I love it.

LITTLE BIG PLANET - PS3 - 2008

This is the game that pushed me into a getting a PS3. LittleBigPlanet is a game that is filled with so much charm and creativity that I don't think any gamer should be willing to pass it up. It's more a tool than it is a game, encouraging players to build and share their own levels with the world. Of course it does come with some amazing pre-made levels as well. Building levels is a simple process but if you want to make a good one it's incredibly complicated--I was never really able to figure it out. But my joy in LittleBigPlanet came from seeing the levels other people could create. I've seen amazing levels based on Silent Hill and BioShock, a level turned into a roller coaster, a complete amusement park, remakes of classic arcade games--and there are millions where that came from and more being made every day. LittleBigPlanet is not a perfect game but it IS a game that everyone should play.

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

oops

I kind of forgot to do this last night.

I assume when they say "game system of choice" we're referring to this gen itself and not of all time. As an owner of all of the "big three" this gen I have to give this one to the 360. It's funny, every past gen I've always been a Nintendo guy when it came to picking a favorite console. I even played the GameCube more than I did the PS2. But this gen I have to give the edge to Microsoft. Best part is, I didn't even care for the original Xbox. I used to have one, briefly, but sold it since it wasn't getting much use. But I am in love with the Xbox 360. That's not to say that I don't still love Nintendo and the Wii, because I do. There are some really amazing games on the Wii. But it feels like, to me at least, that games I enjoy come out more frequently on the 360 than they do on the other two consoles. It annoys me when people seem to think all the 360 offers is Halo and Modern Warfare because it actually has a such a wide range of games, many of which have become some of my favorite games I've ever played. Not to mention the Xbox Live Arcade, where I've spent more money than I wish to discuss, providing some really amazing games as well. Oh yeah, there's also achievements, which I love and hate at the same time.

STUFF!

I should start looking for a new job. I'm currently working two: dish washing and dog washing. The dog washing I actually don't mind really. I enjoy working with dogs and washing them isn't that bad--some are more of a pain to wash than others but overall it's alright. But washing dishes I can't stand. I love the people I work with, they're all nice, cool, and overall friendly. But it's the dishwashing itself that drives me insane. It sounds like an easy enough job since all you really do is rinse off dishes, stick them through a washer, and dry them off but it doesn't take long for it to become a stressful job. Especially when you work in a restaurant that gets as busy as mine. It doesn't help that most of the wait staff never picks up the clean plates, so they start piling up, and many times they don't clear their plates of food because they're "too busy" even though it takes them two fucking seconds so then I have to grab the plate, walk to the garbage, and scrape off the food. It's gotten to the point where I have to keep a small trash by me just in case. I also only work there two days a week (typically it's the same with the dog groomer too) so I should find something to do with myself the rest of the week rather than sit home playing video games.

Not to mention I still have to figure out where I'm going for school but every school I've looked at so far I haven't been feeling. Sometimes I feel like skipping school all together, doing what I can with my Associate's Degree, and getting a cheap apartment somewhere and trying to talk my friends into moving in with me. But then I sometimes think not going back to school could be a big mistake. Gee, life is confusing.

RESIDENT EVIL 4 - GC/PS2/WII - 2005

RESIDENT EVIL FOOOOOOOOOOUR. While I will always love the past Resident Evil games (the remake of the original still stands as my favorite in the series) there is no denying that RE4 is an absolutely brilliant game from start to finish. Everything about it just works so well. The controls, the action, the over-the-shoulder camera--it even popularized quick time events (which may or may not be a good thing)! It was a departure from what Resident Evil fans were used and while many still have a problem with that you have to admit it was nice to see all the positive feedback, reviews, and awards that RE4 was given. It also served as inspiration to several games including Batman: Arkham Asylum, another contender for "best gameplay", and Dead Space, one of the best horror games I've played in years. RE4 was also ported over to the Wii a couple years back and while it was still the same game with motion controls I would venture to say that the Wii version of RE4 is the definitive version. The controls work so unbelievably well that you could have sworn the game was made for the Wii.

That being said, I'm really hoping Resident Evil goes back to its horror roots. RE5 was great and all (and Wesker is a badass) but was even a further departure from the horror element of Resident Evil being set during the day, the non-stop action, and having a co-op partner by your side. They should take a look at Dead Space and try applying that into Resident Evil. Though after the RE5 DLC of Lost in Nightmares and the upcoming 3DS game Revelations promising to be more horror based I like to think Resident Evil's future is bright.

I'm hungry and want some Subway.

This one was the easiest yet.

MOTHER 3 - GBA - 2006 (JAPAN ONLY)

Few video games have conveyed emotion as well as Mother 3 has, which I would rank right up there with a movie in terms of the emotional pull it gives the player. The scene in question is probably known to anyone who has played the game but just to clarify I am, of course, talking about the game's final battle and ending. I absolutely refuse to spoil it for those who haven't played the game so if you haven't I strongly suggest obtaining a copy of Mother 3 by ROM, import, however you want to do it and applying the fan translation patch. Everyone should play this game, whether they are a fan of RPGs or not. Let me put it this way: Mother 3 is the only video game I've ever played that has made me cry. Not just get sad, not just get teary eyed, it made me flat-out cry. Tears rolling down my cheeks and everything. You wouldn't expect that from such a simplistic looking game on the Game Boy Advance of all things, but it's the truth. Mother 3 is beautiful. Screw Nintendo of America for nothing bringing this game stateside.

I GOT NOWHERE ELSE TO GO

So, I need to decide what I want to do with my life. Problem is, I haven't a clue. I was supposed to go a new school this semester and I did, but I wound up hating it so much I dropped out to rethink things. I haven't come any closer to rethinking anything. I can't find a school that feels right for me and, though I have an Associate's Degree in graphic arts, I really don't want to do that. But changing my major now would basically be like starting from square one, which I also don't want to do. I can't stay here forever, I know that, but I just have no clue what I want to do. I'M SO LOST!

This is another one that feels way too hard to decide as there are so many great game soundtracks out there it would be impossible for me to pick an overall best. But here we go!

SUPER MARIO RPG - SNES - 1996

The soundtrack to Super Mario RPG was one of the most memorable things about it and hearing the songs in this game give me a rush of nostalgia and childhood memories. There's not a single song in this game that I wouldn't be able to recognize because the soundtrack was just that good. Of course, everyone loves the Forest Maze theme but there is so much beyond that too. Both Booster themes, Seaside Town, the boss battle, both Smithy battles, the touching music when Geno leaves at the end of the game--the whole soundtrack was just brilliant. The soundtrack was written and performed by the talented Yoko Shimomura, who is easily one of my favorite game composers of all time. She's also done the soundtrack to the Kingdom Hearts series, the Mario & Luigi series, Street Fighter II, some work in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and so much more. As a bonus treat, here is some of her work from Super Mario RPG and some other games she has worked on with the last one being the most epic "final battle" theme ever.

<lj-embed id="14" /> <lj-embed id="15" />
<lj-embed id="16" /> <lj-embed id="17" />
<lj-embed id="18" /> <lj-embed id="19" />
<lj-embed id="20" /> <lj-embed id="21" />
<lj-embed id="22" /> <lj-embed id="23" /> <lj-embed id="24" />
