Name:Daphne Greengrass
Location:United Kingdom
Website:Firey Inception
Bio

The Basics

Character Name: Daphne Helen Greengrass
PB: Virginie Ledoyen

Age: 21
Birthday: January 22nd, 1980
Wand: 12 1/2", a unique combination of yew and unicorn tail hair. Many would say that these two elements contradict each other, while in fact they fit with one another quite well. Yew is the wood of death and rebirth, making it a useful tool in dark magic. Unicorn tail hair, on the other hand, is said to be best for those who are pure of heart. Pure, however, does not have to mean, 'good', 'honourable', 'benevolent', or 'innocent', although that’s often what it implies. Purity comes in many forms, and can be found in a heart with clear, unclouded intentions or desires.
House in School: Slytherin
Bloodline: Pureblood.

Political View: Pureblood supremacist – Death Eater. Daphne believes that muggleborns are of far lesser worth than those of pure wizarding blood. The more wizarding blood is mixed, the more diluted the power becomes, and as more non-magical people become aware of the wizarding world, the more wizarding culture must be changed to suit them. She believes that the ways of wizards are ancient and venerable, and should be treated with respect. Muggles, in her opinion, are lesser beings that deserve to be treated as such and ought to have nothing to do with wizards.

Appearance

Height: 5'6
Weight: 135-ish.
Eyes: Brown.
Hair: Very dark - nearly black.
Build: The average side of slim. She is neither very skinny nor very curvy, but falls unremarkably somewhere in the middle.
Dress Style: Elegant and simplistic – she prefers solid jewel tones over pastels or patterns.

Basic Physical Description:

Defining Marks: Daphne stands at 5'6, and is of a slim build. Her hair is dark and falls to her shoulders in a straight cut, but she is rarely seen with it down. She isn't terribly fond of it, and since she can't be bothered with fussing, she generally wears it twisted at the back of her head. Her eyes are a dark brown colour and her skin is relatively pale. Daphne, if one looks with a purely aesthetic eye, could be termed good-looking. Her features are aristocratic and well-formed, and her clothes are simple and elegant, but there is something off-putting about her entire demeanor. Her presence is distant and haughty, but her default facial expression is generally unreadable until one accidentally prods something beneath the surface that doesn’t want prodding – she is then quite shockingly changeful and abrupt in such a way that makes most want to back off. She tends to leave people with quite a bad taste in their mouth – perplexed and perhaps uneasy at it’s best, and fearful at it’s worst.
Personality

In a nutshell – Daphne is cold, driven, ambitious, tempermental, intelligent, and self-interested. She is magically talented, especially in areas that require precision, such as potion making, arithmancy, and transfiguration. When it comes to vaguer arts, however, such as divination, or even the casting of charms which is often emotionally based, she is slightly lacking since she has a difficult time wrapping her head around concepts that seem abstract or illogical. One of her largest faults is her refusal to admit that she has any. Aside from her magical endeavours, she largely believes that, personally, she is perfect. She doesn’t make a show of this – to Daphne, it is simply fact, and so if someone is ever to point out to her an area in which she lacks, she dismisses it. This is a dangerous trait to have, because if one cannot acknowledge ones' downfalls, it is impossible to fix them. Hence the fact that her negative qualities have never ebbed in their prominence.

Daphne is skilled, however, at twisting situations to suit her own purposes. If there is something she is after, it’s almost impossible to deter her from trying to gain it.

Daphne’s stance on others is as follows: if you are not dirt-veined, completely stupid, or against the pureblood cause, you will fall under the category of tolerable. If you are any of those things, you are hated. If you are one of the few people that Daphne considers an equal, you are respected, and if you are one of the even rarer creatures that she deems better than herself, you are unabashedly adored.

To those few people to whom Daphne does become attached, she is fiercely and unflaggingly loyal. Otherwise, she mainly has her own interests in mind, and won’t hesitate to harm those in her way.
Psychology

Extrovert/Introvert: introvert.
Boggart Would Be: Daphne’s boggart would take the shape of her mother, and most recently probably her mother’s dead form. Daphne’s mother was a marked Death Eater, but was a woman famed for a frivolous personality and for making unintelligent choices. Where Daphne is almost painfully serious about the Pureblood cause, Kacia Greengrass seemed to support the Dark Lord because it was the ‘thing to do’ in the circle that she desperately wished to be a part of. A woman of no remarkable magical talent and no truly deepseated passions, she realized it quickly when she had gotten in too deep. After seeing which way the tide seemed to be turning in the war, Kacia, beset by her own fears, planned to turn herself into the Ministry as a spy. She made the mistake of thinking she could trust her own daughter with this information – or more than likely, she was simply careless when trying to conceal her plans – which ended in her demise. Daphne’s loyalty to her Lord and zeal to prove herself to Him far surpassed any emotional ties Daphne ever had to her mother.

Daphne’s deepest, most overwhelming fear is ending up weak and a traitor, like Kacia.

Patronus Would Be: Daphne has never attempted to produce a patronus.
Sexuality

Daphne is straight. No gray areas, and she is not at all open-minded where her own sexuality is concerned. She doesn’t particularly care what other people do with their genitals as long as pure bloodlines are continued. If, however, she were confronted by a pureblood who had such a strong homosexual preference that he or she refused to reproduce, she would consider it a travesty.

Just like many other aspects of Daphne’s character, her sexuality tends to run hot and cold. If caught in the right mood, I imagine she would be a very passionate lover, likely with fairly violent proclivities… but this would require her to loose the hold logic and intellect have over her actions, which, to put things mildly, is a dangerous thing for her to do. Her natural temperament is vicious bordering on completely unstable, but years of learned self-preservation and societal influence have taught her to keep these things under careful wraps. More on this topic later.
Lifestyle

Occupation: Currently unemployed.
Residence: In the suburbs outside of Manchester (Blackley, to be exact), the Greengrass family resided in what they enjoyed terming their 'ancestral manor', which is more aptly described as a decaying mess. There are certain areas of the house that are not at all habitable. Since Manchester is a heavily populated area, this is part of their method of protection. The Greengrass home is not unplottable, but simply appears to the unseeing eye exactly how it looks on the exterior: a mess, completely not worth living in, and not worth giving a second glance. This isn't to say that it wasn't a fine building at one point in time, because doubtlessly it was, but years of refusing the cost of upkeep has caused it to crumble around the edges. Daphne now lives there alone.
Financial Status: The Greengrass family used to be quite wealthy, but between Aidan foolishly squandering a lot of his money before his death and a current lack of steady income, the money Daphne has been left with is dwindling, and quickly. She is used to a certain standard of living, and has so far ignored the fact that in a few years she will have run her family's fortune into the ground.
Family

Parents: Kacia Greengrass (nee Rosier) and Aidan Greengrass.
Siblings: Morrigan Greengrass.

History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

Daphne was born on January 22nd, 1980, to parents Kacia Rosier and Aidan Greengrass. The pair married young for political reasons, and had their first child, the quiet Morrigan, 4 years before Daphne. Ever since she was a child, Daphne showed signs of having an unusually violent temperament. It manifested itself first in bursts, in temper tantrums that were not easily soothed. These displays mollified her parents, since neither of them were particularly passionate people. Kacia, as I previously mentioned, could not take anything seriously enough to be passionate about it, and Aidan had always been reserved. Her parents were quick to teach her that it was wrong, and bad, to break things when she was angry, and far worse to cause harm to living things. This meant no biting, no scratching, no throwing glass objects at the house-elves, etc. It was simply not done.

Daphne was very hesitant to comply to these rules, but her desire not to be a disappointment won out. It was easier, she discovered, to get what she wanted by being good. Determined even as a child, she set her mind to burying her natural tendencies.

She looked to her older sister, who was always so studious, prudent, and polite as the idea of what a young lady should be. For a long time, she struggled to repress violent, sadomasochistic emotions, hoping to please her parents as much as Morrigan did.

While Morrigan ended up being quiet and disinterested in the Dark Arts, Daphne developed a great interest in them at a young age, trying to take after her mother. Kacia openly practiced the Dark Arts in her home, and it was not long before both her children were to become solidified in their beliefs that she had ties to Voldemort. At first, this awed Daphne, but that was a short-lived feeling. When she entered school, Daphne learned that her family’s reputation preceded her in the pureblood circle. Kacia, apparently, was widely recognized as a frivolous woman of little talent, and dismissed merely as a socialite seeking elevated status by weaseling herself into the Dark Lord’s inner circle of supporters. The more Daphne learned and grew, the more willing she was to accept her mother’s reputation as the truth. When finally it hit her that every sneering word said about Kacia was deserved, Daphne did everything in her power to prove to both herself and her peers that she was nothing like her mother – that she was, in every way, better. Though she had already been a dedicated student, Daphne threw herself into her schoolwork and private studies, leaving little time for anything else.

Even though it was fairly illogical, she harbored an immense amount of anger and a keen sense of betrayal towards her mother. She felt that Kacia had let her down by giving her family a bad name, and most of all, she was embarrassed that she had ever thought such a woman worth admiring. The veil between her cool exterior and the temper beneath became markedly thinner, not at all helped by the fact that it was primarily to suit her mother’s idea of what she ought to be that Daphne had set it there in the first place. It occurred to her that if her mother was such a failure, any advice that she had given to Daphne was likely false. If she was supposed to control her emotions, Daphne decided she would not – she would use them. The Dark Arts had always interested Daphne in an intellectual sense – the temptation of the forbidden was powerful to her, but it began to dawn on Daphne the more she learned that the Dark Arts would also provide the perfect channel for so many of her tendencies. In that way, what she had always been told were her faults would become her assets.

After Voldemort’s return, it became Daphne’s primary goal to enter into his service – and to prove, once and for all, that she was infinitely better, smarter, and more powerful than her mother could ever hope to be.

Having already been raised a pureblood supporter, Daphne now became a zealot for the cause. It was the one thing about which she truly cared – she had no family of whom she could be proud anymore. Her father had been nominally behind the cause, but was never a Death Eater. But when the Dark Lord returned to power, he grew terrified about what this might mean for his family. He refused to be active in Voldemort’s service, and discouraged his family from being so as well, fearing anyone being killed or imprisoned. Morrigan, who trained in journalism when she left school, was a foreign correspondent for the Daily Prophet. As she gained her independence, she had grown distant from her family, and eventually was heard to publically speak out against Voldemort.

There was only one thing about which Daphne's mother proved insightful - the fact that her daughter's vast potential in the realm of the Dark Arts was not something Kacia could handle on her own. During Daphne's later years at Hogwarts, Kacia put Daphne in contact with one or two of her Death Eater cohorts, with whom Daphne then communicated. Kacia's peers were quick to discern that Daphne's levels of intelligence and dedication were on an entirely different scale than her mother's, and through this new connection, Daphne was mentored in the Dark Arts. She did not complete her formal school training after 6th year, not seeing the need to while the wizarding world was in the midst of a war. She was engrossed in her private tutoring, and when the time came, she was marked as a Death Eater; it was the proudest moment of her life.
Daphne proved a loyal and useful servant to the Dark Lord. It was during the years of the war that Daphne came most into herself as a fiercely passionate, dangerous woman.

During the war, Kacia Greengrass tried to turn traitor against the Dark Lord out of fear and met her death. Aidan was another casualty, though his death was purely a freak accident. He was killed in Giant attack on muggles in his home town of Blackely.

The defeat of the Dark Lord sent Daphne to pieces. Though she was never herself charged of being a Death Eater, her mother's (though unfaithful) allegiances landed her on the Ministry Registry. Daphne, however, appealed this decision, pleading innocence, and that a parent's crime ought not to be reflected on the child. She never knew, she claimed, that Kacia and Aidan had any connection whatsoever to the Dark Lord. The death of both her parents, and the discovery of their service to Lord Voldemort was a 'horrible, devastating blow' and she just did not know how her family (only her and her sister) would recover.

The appeal was successful. Several people, however, especially those who attended school with Daphne, still remain very suspicious of her.

When all was said and done, she secluded herself on the Greengrass family’s estate, of which she was now the sole occupant. The time just after Voldemort’s defeat was the darkest time in her life, where, as many other of his servants, she was overwhelmed by a sense of purposelessness, failure, hopelessness, and more than anything else – blinding fury at her former classmate, Harry Potter, the pronounced ‘hero’ of the wizarding world.

But there were shreds of hope yet. Bellatrix released, Lucius Malfoy again in public respect… they had not yet given up.

Neither would Daphne.
