The Table

Blair and Serena have two beginnings. All the other fights and make ups on their way are just ups and downs, but these are the life altering up. These are where the two most important parts of their life started.

The first one is when they actually met. Not really when they met, actually. But the first time Blair noticed Serena. They had been playing together since they were babies, but even then Blair already had Isabel and Kati who followed her everywhere. And Serena was too bubbly and overflowing for Blair’s taste.

But on the third day of kindergarten, when they were both 4, Blair noticed Serena lying on the floor alone, just coloring a picture in a coloring book about Disney Princesses. Since she found that to be unusual, she went over to the blonde. She had never seen Serena alone, or sitting in one place for more than five minutes. And Blair could have bet her favorite lilac dress that Serena had been sitting there for about 20 by that time.

“So, whatcha doing here all alone?” She asked, as she peered into the coloring book.

“Coloring,” Serena answered, without even looking up. The tip of her tongue was slightly sticking out from the corner of her mouth, as she was trying really hard to stay in the lines. Little Mermaid was her favorite princess, and she wanted the picture to look good. She wanted to have the red hair shine, like she imagined it would.

“Why?” Blair acquired further. She sat down next to Serena, to get a better look at the picture.

“’Cause,” Serena simply answered. She wasn’t going to tell that snobby Blair Waldorf that the other girls didn’t want to play with her now that they had learned that she has a baby brother at home. Eric wasn’t even that gross or weird. He was Serena’s little brother and she loved him. She really didn’t get what the big deal was. It was like having a playmate around the house all the time. Or at least that’s how Serena imagined it would be in a few years, when Eric was more grown up.

“They heard about Eric, huh?” Blair asked with a smug smile. She always knew everything. The only person more informed was that creepy little boy Chuck Bass, who hung around with Nate a lot.

Serena looked at Blair for the first time during their conversation. “Yeah,” she answered with a sigh. It seemed to her that there was nothing mean in Blair’s smile.

“They’re stupid,” Blair said with a roll of her eyes. “Eric’s kind of cute. For a baby.” Lily had been over with both Eric and Serena more than once. Blair had seen the little boy just a few days after he was born.

Serena giggled. “Yeah, they are.” She looked down at the picture and then up at Blair. “Do you want to help me with this? I’m not that good at coloring in the lines. But you’re really great at it.”

“I would love to,” Blair answered and lay down next to the blonde. “It’s not that hard, really. You just have to be careful.”

Serena nodded. “Little Mermaid’s my favorite. Don’t you just love her hair? It’s so...red.”

Blair shrugged. “Her hair’s alright. I like Sleeping Beauty, though. Her hair’s kind of like yours. Golden.” From that day on, Blair couldn’t remember a day without that golden hair. Except for that one year, when Serena was away.

Their second beginning is very different. It’s in the summer after Serena came back.

Serena had been at the Hamptons, waiting for Blair’s return all summer. So to say that she wasn’t pleased when Blair returned with James would be and understatement.

Blair was in the middle of one of her rants of how great James was, when Serena suddenly snapped. “Could you just shut up about him? I know you’re only doing this so you could hurt Chuck, and he’s not around right now. He went to play squash or something.”

Blair arched her brown and stared at Serena for a few moments, thinking over exactly what to say. “You can have James, after I’m done with him, if you want. He’s not really even that interesting.”

Now it was Serena’s turn to stare, her mouth slightly open. “You think I want James? I’m not jealous of you, if that’s what you think.” She took a deep breath, before continuing. “It’s him that I’m jealous of.”

Blair played that sentence over a few times in her head, to make sure she heard and understood it right. “Oh.” She reached out for Serena’s hand. “Really?”

Serena swallowed. “Yeah.” She looked down at their joined hands. “I’m sorry. You can forget about that. I don’t even know why I just told you that. It’s that you kept talking about James and I jus-” But she couldn’t continue, because Blair’s lips were on hers. It wasn’t their first time kissing. It wasn’t their second time either. But from that day on, Serena couldn’t remember a day without those lips on her own.
