Bird of the day. Nearly thought this was a white-crowned, till I saw in the book that they don't come here, but further west mostly.

Photo taken on 05/07/13, in the East Bay part of California's San Francisco Bay Area. This little bird has a big, beautiful voice, and I've been greatly enjoying his singing. Click here to visit a page that offers recorded Bewick's Wren songs. Click the photo to zoom in a bit. I recently found out that "Bewick's" is pronounced as if one were saying "Buicks." (I'd been assuming it was pronounced BEE-wix. I like BYOO-ix better.)

Bird of the day, fossicking around in the compost heap.

Amazing! Getting a new bird every day. This one chased all the others off the feeders, with a beak like that...

My book says rufus-sided towhee, but that has recently changed as the spotted (?) has become a separate species. I was puzzled about where towhees fitted into things and found they are related to juncos and to European buntings. Anyway a first for me :-))
As forecast we had SNOW yesterday!!! - or rather a sort of frozen rain that seems to be called 'grackle' here, AND -3°C last night :-((

Caught this morning through the window -- hence the blur -- for the first time this year and, of course, on the coldest morning this month with frost, even threats of snow, forecast!!
