Best of Crimes, Worst of Crimes...
Quick one, my latest commentary's up. Anyone in the St. Louis area can hear it live on NPR during Morning Edition this morning at 7:33 a.m. The podcast will be up sometime after it airs for the second time. I sucked it up and listened through their live streaming option this morning at 5:33, now I understand the whole Mother/Author/Student subject lines of various emails...still not used to hearing my own voice. Here's the link if you're interested - http://www.kwmu.org/Programs/Commentaries/commentary.php?cid=726Will pop on later to tell my other news! | | Thursday, November 2nd, 2006 | | 9:30 pm |
You can take the girl out of the Midwest... | What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. | | Philadelphia | | | The Inland North | | | The South | | | The Northeast | | | The West | | | Boston | | | North Central | | | What American accent do you have? |
Is anyone else impressed at how exact they can pinpoint where you grew up? Good to know about that radio thing, I just got notice another commentary will run next week. Will post details closer to the day. | | Friday, October 20th, 2006 | | 8:18 am |
"real women have curves" hehe
So I was just checking in and catching up on my pseudonym's blog after a long absence - http://aimee-ferris.livejournal.com/and noticed someone slammed me for my cover! As you can see from my pics or those who've met me in person, it is kind of funny that I'd be in the position of having to retort to a "real women have curves" accusation that I am furthering an unhealthy body image. I know I should feel spoiled. Other than the one crazed Shatner non-fan major profanity-filled flameage after I posted about my bizarro-land dream, I've never had any negative comments on the blogs. I hope I handled it okay. As far as the other blog goes, I am catching up friending folks from this one from that one...if that makes any sense at all. And in response to someone else's question, the bio is not made up. It's just a pre-Taco bio of the stuff I did since that blog address is on the book jacket and in the catalogue and I don't want all the Taco stories to be quite so public. | | Monday, October 9th, 2006 | | 1:03 pm |

We Made It!
And...WE LOVE IT! We are having such a blast! Still up to our ears in boxes. Still in search of a preschool for Taco. Still in search of doughnuts for Taco who is slowly adjusting to the idea that there isn't a Tim Horton's "baby doughnut store" on every corner. Understandable that he would be perplexed considering there were 63 Tim's locations in the city we moved from. Yes, 63. In one city. Insane. So Taco is being weaned from his doughnut addiction onto a temporary chocolate chip hazelnut Bread Alone scone replacement. Kind of like those folks who use methadone to kick the heroin. I think the process is going well. ( Read more... ) | | Sunday, September 24th, 2006 | | 12:26 pm |

Awooooooooo!!!
That was me sounding like a wolf. So we've been spending as much time as possible with Roomie and her little guy while we can. We are all carefully avoiding the thought of not living within a mile of each other and making the most of the time we've got. We've done days to the beach, nights at the drive-in, trips to the state fair, afternoons at the children's museum...and Thursday morning we left for this place- http://www.greatwolflodge.com/Locations/Niagara/explore.aspx( Read more... ) | | Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 | | 10:36 am |
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
-for all the nice comments about the cover. You guys are the best! Here's me while I was recording the radio commentaries. I think I found a middle ground on the image size.*EDITED TO ADD* DANG! I'm huge. Arrrrrrrr (as the pirates would say) I am so not techie! Working on it, sorry for my hugeness*** The first one is running during Morning Edition on NPR affiliate KWMU at 5:33 and 7:33 (for you St. Louisians) and anyone really desperate to hear it live (I'm referring to blood relatives who might fear being mentioned and want to get a jump on calling me to complain) can do so on the live streaming website http://www.kwmu.org/Programs/Commentaries/index.php And it will also be available after airing through podcasting. I recorded several commentaries, most more general in topic, but this particular one is about a Route 66 custard stand called Ted Drewes that has achieved a cult-like fan base all over the country and beyond. http://www.roadtripamerica.com/eats/drewes.htm Anyone been? And...I'm totally freaking out about having to hear it...hehe

Cover!
I know, I know. So SMALL. Okay, all you technowiz-i out there, what are my options here? The very cool border that really makes it pop didn't come out either, arrrgh. But yay! What an amazing artist! I love it. | | Sunday, August 27th, 2006 | | 10:19 pm |
ROADTRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hehe. Super quick one. Taco and I cancelled the plane reservation and hopped in a rental car for a nine hour roadtrip Friday! Much fun was had by all...as you might imagine, hehe. Just wanted to drop a note since I haven't had access to answer emails/comments and things like that yet. See everyone Monday (when I have internet again)! | | Monday, August 21st, 2006 | | 9:11 pm |
The Cruelty of Getting Old...Or Getting Old Feels Like, er, um...
So the party went great. Just a laid back fun time, not sure if the adults or the kiddos liked it more, really. I definitely can endorse the whole party on the fly method. So much less stress. And because I hadn't really planned things out, it was no worries that it all went out the caboose window within minutes. But before that, was no one amazed that they rent out the whole caboose, including hitching it up to the train for a total of ten dollars? That ASTOUNDED me! I Think I Can, I Think I Can...
So yesterday, I made the decision to go ahead and throw Taco his birthday party. Party's tomorrow. Heh. I really do work best under pressure. This might be a bit ridiculous though. My main concern was not getting anyone to come on such short notice. Initially, I decided to skip the idea of a party at all since everyone is out of town and doing things (or so I thought!). But Taco was not down with that. And you know how I hate to disappoint the Tacage. Soooo, twenty-five people have RSVP'd that they are coming in the past 24 hours. Heh. The Boys Are Back in Town...
Okay, so technically they weren't OUT of town...but I am sooooo happy! You might have noticed the absence of any roomie talk the past few months. Yes, I know, we moved into our own place. But she'll always be "roomie" and having spent half of Clouds' life, her little guy who's two months younger than Taco, together living in the same (often very small) house, I love the kid. Clouds will just always be my second favorite boy in the world. ( Read more... ) | | Thursday, August 10th, 2006 | | 6:25 pm |
It Takes a Heap of Loafing to Write a Book...
Or something along those lines. I've been trying to nail down that quote I thought was one of Gertrude Stein's. Found several versions with the same meaning, no solid reference to her saying it (unless you count the 39,000 google sites), but regardless of whose and what was the precise wording, I like it... So, fill in the blank - It takes a heap of ______________, to write a book. Mine would be napping, coffee, chocolate, and skittles. Not sure which order... It's official, gonna have a piece in Wondertime Magazine. It's a great mag, really looking forward to working with them. Will let you know when and where!

Tut Tut, It Looks Like Rain. Tut Tut...
Oh, if only it might be so. When it rains it pours, right? I want that in writing. As some of you know, I am a queryaholic. I know, it's a sickness and a rare one at that. But I love to query and I'm not ashamed to admit it. So back in early July, I sent out a rash of queries to mags. And today I got my first article assignment for a very nicely done parenting mag! Due to the usual superstitions, I'll spill the details after getting the official assignment letter. Here's hoping for a little black rain cloud to move in... btw, we don't usually do hot dogs but bought a pack for a BBQ. Taco has passed on the ultra charcoalized favorite method of preparation I favor and wants to eat it plain, or raw. Is that cool? Or not so much? They taste cooked but the package doesn't say. Thanks to anyone who knows!

Tiny, whoa- cool moment...
I was googling the pen name to see if the blog or anyone else by that name popped up, and there was a mention of the book on PW. Freaky. It was just listed under the Spring 2007 sneak preview page, but still. Freaky. | | 10:28 am |
Everyone's a Critic...
I was amused/dismayed/proud to see Taco react to a certain book I was reading him with most obvious scorn and distaste. I won't mention which since I happened to agree with his take on it. There was much exasperated rolling of eyes, confused shaking of head, and deep sighs of boredom until I finished it. At which point he put on a fake smile and thanked me for reading it. I know, I know, but it had nice pictures and I didn't have time to preview at the library. Usually when this happens, I just make up my own story to go with the pictures. But I kind of wanted to see how he'd act if I read it straight. ( Read more... ) | | Thursday, July 27th, 2006 | | 2:34 pm |
No Pressure...
I am going to do a workshop for the city's Book Camp in the end of August! Gonna be forty kids, 10-12, of course I'm very honored, looking forward to it, very excited...until... She just sent me an email saying, "This all looks great! Oh yes, we just also need to get your number one tip for young writers? We need it to put in the brochure by four." Geesh. No pressure, eh? I must have written forty things down and backspaced through them. Too cheesy or too trite or too something or not enough something else... Man. So, kind of curious - What would your Number One Tip be? **************************************** ******************** UPDATE - What I came up with in the end, followed my own personal philosophy about writing and fit in nicely with the workshop I'm going to do - Read. Be Brave. Live Life. Thanks for sharing all of your views which were most inspiring (and occasionally, snortworthy). ;)
