Hello there guys!
I've been watching this community for some time, and now decided to share some of my works with you. I work with wool, make felt, and love it so much. Even though it's summertime now, here in England the weather is so moody you can never tell when you might need a woollen scarf :-)

I've made these things recently from raw undyed wool, as a part of my eco-friendly collection. I love working with raw wool as well as sheep and alpaca fleece.

Hi @ everybody!
I am watching this community for one week now and I am really amazed of the fantastic work I am finding here! I found this community while searching for ideas what to make for my kids. I am an elementary teacher (and the best proof that not every teacher is gifted when it comes to crafting) and I was searching for ideas for little presents because I am leaving the school. It´s a tradition that kids that are leaving my class (my second graders - the first graders are staying) get a self-made present from me. Now that I am the one leaving every kid gets something which means much work since I have 22 cuties in my class.
Two years ago I made little animals out of pearls and last year I made about 20 pigs (for my kids, friends and family). It´s nothing compared to your work but I feel like sharing. Remember: I am a beginner and not as talented as I wish I was. Pics are under the cut.
Once more congratulations of all your amazing works!!!

Crochet Flower Necklaces [22 May 2013|10:12am]

I've recently found myself living out of the spare bedroom in my parents' house after a fire in a neighboring apartment forced me out of mine.  So, I have had to move onto smaller scale and less messy forms of craft.  I stocked up on a bunch of yarn, chains, and jump rings and have started making some large-ish fibre based necklaces.

I am liking how they are turning out.  And, I have even found uses for some of the vintage pendants I have laying around.

Made this last night.  It's now hanging in my car.  I'd like to get some different feathers for it eventually but the only thing the local walmart has is those kinds.  So that will have to wait 'til my trip in to the city.  I also want to get some elastic bands or thread of some kind so that I can actually take the thing on and off my car mirror.

I also have a question!  The long "grizzly feathers" you see people wear in their hair...can you find those in craft stores or would they just be available a specialty beauty shops?

I am getting brave! 2nd post! I created these two over the weekend as a little pick me up break between 'real life' work. Thinking about trying to complete a whole set of characters. Got my eye on Princess Bubblegum and Gunther next!

The only thing I skipped was the 'warm woolen mittens', which I think would've been bad luck anyway. Given that just two weeks ago we had 14 inches of snow an hour south of here!

So today I made a thing. I am a first time poster and long time reader of this community and this is a very nerve racking thing to do as I have seen how amazingly talented all you other people out there in internet land are! This is a felt brooch based off the tumblr famous "you tried" star :)

Shoes [16 May 2013|10:02am]

craftgrrl

[kestrel337]
Never tried this before, and am frankly a bit intimidated by the cool costumes that've been posted of late. But I'm pleased with how these turned out on the whole.

Here are the shoes for my now-complete costume for the Sing Along Sound of Music on Saturday. Someone guessed that I'm going as 'girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes' and they were correct. I've also hit a few other items from the song with the overall ensemble. It's either clever or lame; I'm never sure which. The shoes were done with mod-podge, distressed lunch bags, nail polish, craft string.

New Banners [15 May 2013|04:55pm]

craftgrrl

[meneleth]
I haven't posted for a long time, mainly because I haven't been crafting.  Something about winter drains my creativity by February.  With the (mostly) spring weather, though, I'm getting started again.  First up - I've had an idea for a while for Pentecost banners for my church. For any who don't know, Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came down to the apostles, looking like tongues of flame above their heads.  The liturgical color for that Sunday is red, so I used that as a starting point.  I found lightweight, crinkly red fabric for the main background. Then I added coppery silk and a see-through orange fabric with red glittery dots, which I cut into strips to provide more movement.  I wanted to portray the flow and swirl of the flames.  These are smaller banners to be hung as the side of the aisles.  I will make four in total (we have four hooks), but due to time, I've only finished two for this Sunday (Pentecost).  It was a challenge to take what I could clearly picture in my mind and try to create something similar for real, but I'm pleased with the results.

Let me know what you think:

What I made [12 May 2013|08:57pm]

craftgrrl

[kateandtito]

So I haven't posted here but I'm pretty proud of this so I wanted to share. A simple pillowcase dress for my 15 month old daughter. I just got a new fancy sewing machine and I haven't actually made any clothing since I was in the 6th grade. The majority of my sewing has been curtains, pillowcases and some baby blankets. I didn't use a pattern for this, just traced another dress of hers and allowed for seams and hemming. Only took about 35 mins to make (took longer to figure out how to thread the new machine!) :)

Some knitted things and first crochet project [12 May 2013|06:12pm]

craftgrrl

[kayasatochi]
Heya, this is my first time posting something here... So, just before christmas holiday last year, I knitted some... I'll just call them keychains. I asked the people I made them for which country they like and made these. I made an Ireland, Greece, Japan, Poland, Iceland, England, Scotland, another England and a Wales flag. The Scotland one and one England keychain went to my sisters and I kept Wales for myself =)

And, I crocheted the first time (the times with my grandmother don't count, I already forget those lessons...) and made a "Plue" from Fairy Tail for an upcoming birthday of a friend. It's not exactly as I thought it might be, but it was my first time and for that, it's not that bad.

Well then, I might do some more crocheting and then I'll post pictures of those... Wanted to make something for my mother (but I see her in a week, later than the birthday, so I made this first) and for my sisters... And something for myself, so, I am going to busy myself ^^

Bad weather cozy [12 May 2013|02:09pm]

We've been hit with a cold snap again. The weather has yet to breach 20C, so I made this for a friend with all my newfound free time. I'm tempted to keep it, haha.

And, to top it off, here are a few flamingo facts:
1. A flamingo's knees can bend backwards
2. Flamingos are pink because of the keratin pigments in the food they eat
3. A group of flamingos is called a 'flamboyant'
4. Flamingos are actually born with straight beaks; they develop the curve several months after birth

That is all. =)

Two things today... [11 May 2013|09:44pm]

I got some Super Sculpey recently. I missed sculpting, which I did a lot as a child. I made some bits for some Warhammer 40,000 scenery I'm customising, and then I made a kitty...Collapse )

I also have a friend who has been a bit bummed out recently. She also (after 6 YEARS of my haunting her) got into Doctor Who recently. So... What better gift than a TARDIS cross-stitch?Collapse )

Last July, I finally went and got my Harry Potter tattoo. I love it -- even though it sometimes gets me eye rolls and disbelieving laughter. Because, for every eye roll, there's someone who gets SUPER EXCITED because I have a HARRY POTTER TATTOO! :D

I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed, or worse, expelled.Collapse )

Advice on Digital Cutting Tools [11 May 2013|08:28am]

craftgrrl

[kittrel]
[ mood | curious ]

I'm looking for some advice and thought maybe someone in this community might be able to help me out. I'm looking at purchasing a new "art toy" and I've been eying up electronic cutting tools / personal die cutters.

I found some great and helpful reviews here: http://die-cutting-machines-review.toptenreviews.com/

I like the top 2 in that list (Gazelle and ECraft), but my problem is... my computer is a mac. Very very few of these machines have mac-compatible software. The top 2 don't. I found 3rd party software here: http://www.craftedge.com/ that claims to make the machines I was looking at work with my mac. I'm kinda leery though.

Does anyone out there use a machine like this on a mac? What's your experience? Do you have any recommendations? Any warnings? It's a pretty major purchase and I don't want to screw it up. :)

As an aside, I'll be using the machine to do cards and art. I like to draw but I'm honestly better at graphic design - I think designing artwork in adobe illustrator (which I have and love) and then piecing it together in layered paper cutouts would be awesome. I was excited about the possibility of cutting balsa wood too.

Any Chicago knitters or crocheters out there? [11 May 2013|08:09pm]

craftgrrl

[chomem]
GingerOfTheNorth very kindly taught me awhile ago the basics of crochet, and I made a friend a baby blanket. That baby is now two years old and has a sibling on the way.

My next project was going to be to make two lap blankets, one for my great-grandmother and one for my rather suddenly wheelchair bound grandfather. They died, within a week of each other (unrelated causes), long before I managed to complete even half of one blanket. I was somewhat put off of crochet at this point, and ended up giving GingerOfTheNorth all my yarn when I moved to Chicago.

I almost kept it, though, because I was considering taking up crochet again, and/or learning to knit. Then I found out A was pregnant again. Not long after that, I found out another friend is pregnant. And now, my sister is pregnant.

So, I think it's time to pick up my hooks again, or possibly some needles. If there's anyone in the area that's willing to take some time to remind me of my crochet or teach me to knit, I'd greatly appreciate it.
