The aftermath of Snowmageddon 2009

mmebahorel

Ended up with a total of 21" here in Silver Spring in approximately 24 hours. Third roommate was downtown and ended up having to stay with friends, but she made it back yesterday (and has now gone to the airport to go home for Christmas). I am currently drinking tea with overpriced milk for the first time in days. (Giant, why do you think you can charge $1.49 for a quart? I only paid it because I was only making one grocery trip for the next three days. Yes, I'm bitching about a 50 cent difference, but when you're talking about breaking the dollar barrier, that's a huge psychological difference.)

The downside today is that we have no water. Pipe break sometime after 10:30 or so - I got the last of the hot water to shower this morning. So that trip to the grocery store also involved bringing back a gallon of water that I hadn't anticipated and boy is that heavy when you don't plan on buying heavy things.

Now, being snowed in, you'd think I must have accomplished something. You would be wrong. I haven't even written much.

Ok, water's back (it was out 5 hours or so).

Yeah, totally not getting anything done.

M*A*S*H book.

My apologies if this has been posted already. (Maybe even by me!)

I heard a bit about this book some time ago:

TV's M*A*S*H: The Ultimate Guide Book

But I just came across this bit from one of the authors that made me want it even more!

Mr Gelbart actually wrote new MASH dialogue, and it's in our book. If you fans recall Mr Gelbart's final episode, The Interview, it featured Clete Roberts interviewing the characters. Mr Gelbart has written all new dialogue for his most legendary episode, featuring Clete Roberts interviewing characters who were not actually in "The Interview" episode. These include interviews with Trapper, Henry, (Rogers and Stevenson had left the show by then) and Margaret (who was not available at the time of filming) and a special, surprise interview with another well known character.

Source

How awesome is that?

The price is steep at 50 bucks. But it might actually be worth it if it's 800 pages long! I wouldn't normally drop so much money on any book. But I would be willing to consider it in this case. I just wish I could find it in a bookstore so I could look through it and see whether it really is worth it.

If Santa brings this for anyone, please tell us what you think of it!

R.I.P., Brittany Murphy

I can't believe Brittany Murphy is dead. It's just too weird to comprehend.

Random Ki

evila_elf

Ki loves to join me in the bathroom when I take a shower. She has until I get the towels laid down and my clothes off before I close the door all of the way. Just as I stepped into the shower, I heard her 'knock' at the door. AKA push against it to make it rattle.

Shower shower shower, lalala.

When I get out of the shower, she starts knocking again, which really makes a racket. oi

I grab my hair dryer and see her pay snake under the door just before I turn it on. She quickly pulls it back (has a hatred of the dryer). Once hair is mostly dry, I let her in. She looked put out that the 'party' was all over with. o.O I crouch to pet her some, and she headbutts my knee, almost knocking me over. *sigh*

Exciting, no?

Anyway, going to see Avatar tomorrow (Sunday) with Mom and one of her friends. They've never seen a 3D movie before, so shall be interesting :) I hope the 3D not make her sick. Heard a few reviews that mentioned it made them a bit ill, but there is no 2D option at the theater this time.

Why did I have to be snowed in today?

mmebahorel

I'm actually sorry I worked yesterday because it means I do not have the two things that would make being snowed in rather awesome: bacon and booze. Also, milk and eggs would have been nice, too.

(ok, bacon for this pasta recipe I want to try - also wish I had italian sausage I meant to pick up because really, this weather cries out for heavy meaty cheesy pasta casserole thing, and I have no sausage.)

But really, I have no booze. Isn't this weather just crying out for mulled wine or hot buttered rum or even just a shot of something other than milk in your tea? (and I don't have any more milk for my tea, either.)

There are all kinds of things I ought to get done today. Somehow, I think I'm mostly going to be watching the snow and the news coverage in complete awe. The blizzard of 1999 only (only!) gave me 14" in one go. This looks set to pass it.

I don't even know

mmebahorel

The Washington Post has us on a map of doom predicting 16-24" by the time this whole snow thing is over on Sunday.

TWO FUCKING FEET.

TWO.

I ought to be pissed off, perhaps, but I'm just in awe. How in the hell are we getting two fucking feet of snow? (we're not - but boy will it make the one foot of snow look way better than if they were predicting OMG ONE FOOT OF SNOW!!!!)

I told Amanda at Ford's to call me if she needs ushers tomorrow. So I'm almost certainly going downtown tomorrow because I'm a nice (crazy) person like that. That was before I knew about the 16-24" thing.

Metro can't guarantee running above ground with more than 8 inches. God help us all with the drivers around here (though at least we had ideal conditions - plenty of notice and it started well after rush hour - for salting).

This should be interesting.

Temp jobs at the holidays - so weird

mmebahorel

So this afternoon, I'm filling in a receptionist for a law firm that is having their Christmas party in house instead of at a hotel (at least the caterers in town are probably doing ok this season).

I am currently in the "library" because they have commandeered the lobby for karaoke. Yes, karaoke. There is currently a version of Can't Take My Eyes Off of You that would make Frankie and Bob weep, and I don't even mean the quality of the singing. Some songs don't need an R&B version.

On the other hand, I got free lunch and have internet access.

I suspect I won't be working next week. Three days really, and if no one is calling about them yet, I rather doubt I'll get a call.

Can I get another of those temp Fed gigs, though? $17 an hour to do nothing.

Latin form of the name 'Humphrey'?

askahistorian

(hyarrowen)

I'm writing a story, and I'm here via little_details, and it is a very small detail. But I can't find this anywhere - I've tried baby-name sites, and the Duke Humfrey's Library site at Oxford University. Though it's a Germanic name there must surely be a formal Latin version for offical documents???

Thanks in advance!

ETA: Asked and answered in the space of hours! Thanks, guys.
