Man, it's too early in the morning for my poor brain to decide if this stuff is real or not.
Former World Chess Champion and Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov has been attacked by radio-controlled penis during a meeting of opposition activists. Pro-Kremlin demonstrators decided to interrupt Kasparov’s address, designed to unite opposition political forces, by launching a rotor-assisted plastic phallus towards Mr Kasparov.
Apparently.... with video? |

| The Good, the Bad and the Ugly |
[Aug. 24th, 2007|12:22 pm] |
The Good: I finally finished my thesis. As nothing on this road is ever simple or straightforward, I have still yet to actually give it to my defense committee, however that should be taken care of within the hour. I am scheduled to defend in just under two weeks, and following a few days for corrections and getting my margins correct (grad studies apparently requires very small tolerances on the alignment of whatever printer you choose to use) I should be completely finished.
The Bad: My water test results came back, and apparently the tap water in my house has 280x the safe levels of lead in it. So high, that the environment department thought there must have been a problem with the testing. But really, how bad can 4 years of drinking heavily lead tainted water be for you?
The Ugly: Me, apparently. Damnit ladies, the good doctor is IN. |

| House Guest, No More Urn |
[Apr. 12th, 2007|12:22 am] |
somerled has been over for the past couple of days. I don't know. It's either awesome, or fantastic.
Adam is now my hero. He picked up the cat urn, and asked why I kept it. I told him I didn't even like it, and he took it far away! He said he was afraid it might attract other cats if he poured it out, so he made sure to walk further. And further. |

| Update Journal. |
[Mar. 30th, 2007|03:31 pm] |
I frequently wonder what I'm doing with my life. Today two things become clear:
1) I had been doing nothing. Of course I already knew this better than anyone, but following a long chain of e-mails about my research work really crystalized it. The meeting ending with the re-sending of an e-mail from July which contained the goals of my work. It was resent because I've made no positive progress towards them since then.
2) I will be finished my research in its entiriety by the end of July. I will then have August to write, and I will defend sometime in the fall. I do not believe I will be (significantly, if you can call it that) funded after August.
My wondering and wandering is not limited to school either. However those failings and dreams that may come are for another day. |

| Bedroom Persuasions. |
[Jan. 28th, 2007|01:54 am] |
I feel one of those furniture buying swells coming on. Probably I need to get a dresser of some kind, so I will match my other bedroom furniture. However, I will also have the option to get the remaining items in the set:
- a headboard/footboard for my bed - a night table - a bedroom mirror (full length)
The more of these things I get, the better deal it becomes. But what is actually worth paying any money for? I suppose a complete bedroom set would have two night tables, but I would feel all kinds of wrong having a bedroom with two of those right now. |

| All good things must come to an end? But at least we may dine first. |
[Jan. 20th, 2007|04:10 am] |
So I am leaving your white trillium covered province tomorrow and I would like to extend an invitation to all for a late brunch before I go. I need to pick up some things from the apartment of Mr. Jon and and Mr. Peter, so maybe it would be best to meet at their place (or in front of, I don't want to invite people up to their place with asking them :|) for 2pm. Then we can set forth and find someplace worthy. I will still have some hours to chill after food for those interested - my flight isn't until 7:45pm.
So to recap: Brunch tomorrow, meet at Mr. Jon and Mr. Peter's building at 2pm. Call or text me sometime tomorrow if you are coming I guess!
P.S. Thanks to everyone, Toronto and Ottawa, for your hospitality. |

| Youtube Excitement. |
[Jan. 17th, 2007|03:48 pm] |
I'm so excited! Youtube finally has tons of chess videos online!
It's too bad this one is so dark... It's pretty intense! :|
This is where I travelled to in the Netherlands a while back, although it is the tournament for this year in the video (currently happening, the video is from a couple days ago). |

| Travel x2. |
[Jan. 11th, 2007|04:13 pm] |
Ok, for those in Ottawa I have not yet been able to catch up with, I am planning on taking the 9:30am bus tomorrow (Friday the 20th) morning, which gets me in at 2:30pm. My game starts at 6pm, and if I don't meet up with you guys that afternoon, I can stash my stuff in my team's hotel room until after the game. However, I have given away my bed in the hotel, so I'll have to grab my stuff afterwards and find one of you! Or I could sleep on the park bench. My new coat seems pretty warm.
For those in Toronto, I am thinking that the best way to guarantee my making the bus is to have a breakfast meet of sorts. So anyone who likes to get up early is welcome to come! Please let me know. Fran's is close to the bus terminal, but maybe it would be too busy during breakfast? I think Eggspectation or whatever it is called is where I did this last time, and is just down Yonge. a block or two from Fran's?
EDIT: It's written in stone: Fran's at 8am. |

| Christmas Alert. |
[Dec. 22nd, 2006|12:59 am] |
|
Alert! I have not bought or made any gifts yet this year. I was stressing today about receiving gifts I've been informed are coming and having nothing in return. I don't want to buy something you won't really like, and I won't be happy about giving you a sub-par gift. So, I am postponing Christmas until it clears up. I have an idea or two, however it will probably take me more than three days to get it done. Hopefully before I leave the province I will have something. |

How do you all clear your head?
Mine is pretty messed up. It kind of switches to something new really quick and I never get a handle on what it's thinking. I just feel like it's full of noise. Everything all at once. Been keeping me up at night. After today it's just going to be worse.
I found out I have no more research meetings until January, this after the last two weeks were both cancelled (two weeks ago there was technically a meeting, but it was about 10 minutes long and consisted of me being asked if I was hungry, and then the suggestion that I go for lunch). I agreed to play in a tournament in Ottawa following New Year's, so by the time I get back, it will probably be nine full weeks being written off before I can discuss any results I might have (I say might, because it seems obvious to me there is something wrong with the ones I have). And still, I don't even have a clear topic.
I don't wish to be negative, so I hope this isn't contrued as whining. I'm hoping it will just be informative. The real point is that first question, how do you all clear your head? |

| Sexually Confused. |
[Nov. 21st, 2006|07:23 pm] |
I just saw this:
Poll of the Week ---------------- Sexually, I am a: a) Volvo b) Jaguar c) SUV
I don't get it, is there some kind of obvious symbolism here (well the Volvo I can see, but the other two?!), or is it just meant to be confusing and weird? Volvos tend to be safe cars, so if you are cautious and reserved, ok! But jaguars are expensive and break down a lot? And does being an SUV mean you think you do it like a soccer mom?
For the record, 60% of people think they are a Jaguar, followed by 25% SUV and 15% Volvo. |

Booked: Westjet Flight 663: Dec 30 Depart Halifax YHZ 6:30am Arrive Toronto YYZ T3 7:57am
Since it was way cheaper to fly Westjet up and Air Canada back, I'll book my return flight later... As long as I remember... Or I'll find some other transportation... Or maybe I'll just run away and never go back. I'm sure something will come up? |

| We're not gonna take it. |
[Nov. 18th, 2006|05:05 pm] |
Saturday morning Farmer's Market you have bested me for the last time. You're so coy with your 1pm closing time, and your slick methods of drugging me into slumber. That must be the only explanation. But next week I will be on my guard.
Milton Friedman died in the last couple days. I had just read an article about him (and watched a bunch of tv appearances on youtube). I hope one day I can be just as infuriating as he was.
Ok Toronto people, I will come to your New Year's Eve! But how long would you like me to stay? Probably I could stay until the 9th or 10th, but I suspect you may find me at least temporarily infuriating before then. |

| Not So Foreign Films I. |
[Oct. 28th, 2006|05:55 pm] |
I saw Marie Antoinette and Shortbus recently.
I was very critical of Marie Antoinette afterwards, but I think it is not as bad as I might have made it seem. I liked the music very much, and although I was very bored through the whole movie, I didn't want to leave. So maybe it wasn't that bad. I would say it was just barely entertaining enough to hold my attention throughout most of the movie. I remember being much more impressed with Versailles in person than I was from the movie, but that's probably to be expected.
I loved Shortbus on the other hand (but I'm basically a perv). The sex scenes were kind of shockingly explicit at first, but good. However, I liked the other parts of the movie far more. It was great, with all the miniatures, and the conversations. And that song at the end! I can't remember feeling as happy walking out of a theatre since I saw Amelie. I'm going to finish tracking down Hedwig and the Angry Inch so I can see that too. -- If you are ever in doubt as to whether to kiss a pretty girl, always give her the benefit of the doubt. -Thomas Carlyle |
