| Director of Clueless on Brittany Murphy |
[Monday December 21 @ 12:57pm] |

I just got off of the phone with Amy Heckerling, who directed Brittany Murphy in her breakthrough film “Clueless” (1995) nearly 15 years ago. Heckerling authorized me to post audio of our six-minute conversation, which you can listen to by CLICKING HERE, but for those who would rather read text here are a few excerpts…
* ON BRITTANY’S WORK IN “CLUELESS” “She was wonderful. She was just such a sweet, innocent person. And when we were working on that movie, her mother was going through cancer treatments, and was always on the set, and they were inseparable. And Brittany was just this little teenage person that was so loving and caregiving towards her mother.”
* HOW DID BRITTANY GET THE PART? “She came in, and read, and she was just perfect. She just had such a lovable, innocent quality.”
* DID SHE KEEP IN TOUCH WITH BRITTANY? “I haven’t seen her recently. I mean, I didn’t see her, like, maybe over the past year. But over the years, yeah. She’s not one of the people that I email like Paul [Rudd] and Alicia [Silverstone], you know, where you’re making jokes during the year and stuff. But, yeah, a little bit. I really wasn’t in her crowd, you know?”
* WERE THERE WARNING SIGNS ABOUT BRITTANY? “You know, everybody’s shaking their heads and going ‘drugs,’ of course. I don’t know what was happening on the last movie. I know that, you know, she seemed to go through a change, you know, on ‘Clueless.’ Maybe she felt like she was not the, like, skinny, pretty girl, you know? And then the next few movies she was, you know, thinner, blonde, you know, at MTV Awards and all sorts of things like that, and going out with Eminem and Ashton Kutcher, and, you know, suddenly got more into that whole glamorous scene… I think she felt the pressure to become a different sort of commodity to survive in show business, and I think it was awful.”
* WHAT KIND OF A CAREER WOULD BRITTANY HAVE GONE ON TO HAVE? “I think she could have done anything… I think she did a few things after “Clueless,” you know, before she, sort of, tried to be more of a glamorous girl. I mean, she certainly, you know, had talent and could have done a lot of things. She could have, as she got older, been a wonderful character, too. She had ‘acting chops,’ as they say, and, you know, she could have gone on for as long as she wanted.”
* HOW DO YOU THINK/HOPE BRITTANY WILL BE REMEMBERED? “She was sweet, and playful, and fun, and a very lovable girl… I’m so sorry for her family, and her mother, who she was so close to. I just can’t imagine what she’s going through.”

| "John Hughes movie with dogs" aka "Marmaduke" Teaser Trailer Debut |
[Monday December 21 @ 3:14pm] |
For Phil and Debbie Winslow, moving their family from Kansas to the O.C. is a big deal. For their enormous Great Dane “Marmaduke,” (voiced by Owen Wilson) however, the move means a whole new way of life. It’s chaos at home and awkward at work as the Winslows struggle to control their angsty teenage canine. Based on the classic comic strip about a Great Dane that causes all sorts of mischief, Marmaduke hits theaters on June 4th and Yahoo has debuted the brand new teaser that's really only a shot of the pooch hanging out of a car while Owen Wilson talks about how hard it is to be a teenage dog. And as much as I really want to write this one off, it does boast a pretty impressive supporting cast that includes Emma Stone, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Ron Perlman, Judy Greer, Steve Coogan, William H. Macy, George Lopez, Stacy Ferguson, Damon Wayans Jr., Amanda Seyfried and Jeremy Piven. Guess we'll have to wait for a longer trailer, though I know it's going to take me awhile to get used to the voice thing. And what's up with the line about being hosed? Who still says hosed?

| the Associated Press’ Entertainer of the Year |
[Monday December 21 @ 2:16pm] |

It should come as no surprise that Taylor Swift is being lavished with yet another honor- this time it’s the title of the Associated Press’ Entertainer of the Year.
The “Love Story” singer dominated 2009 with her hit singles and awards show winnings and the AP declared her dominance in the entertainment industry.
In typical humble fashion, Taylor was giddy to hear the news, telling press, “I am so honored and excited. This was so unexpected and I could not be more grateful.”
And it sounds like Taylor may be treating her fans to another new album before too long. “The second that I put out Fearless, the moment that album came out and I was done with it, I started writing for my next album. I love to plan 20 steps ahead of myself, and it’s really fun competition game that I play with myself, trying to top what I’ve done last. For this next record, that’s all that I’ve been thinking about, that’s all that my mind has been fixated on for the last year, and it’s all that I’m going to be thinking about for this next year.”

| Avatar Doesn't Quite Break The Record |
[Monday December 21 @ 3:12pm] |
UPDATE: Not quite. 20th Century Fox's official number for "Avatar" domestically is $77,025,481, which falls just short of "I Am Legend's" record of $77,211,321.
Twentieth Century Fox is doing cartwheels over box-office figures that show that its expensive space adventure “Avatar” performed sharply better on Sunday than initially expected. Fox said Monday morning that “Avatar” sold $77.3 million in tickets in North American theaters over the weekend – instead of a projected $73 million – to narrowly beat a record for a December opening.
The stronger-than-expected showing indicates that positive word of mouth is fanning interest in the 3-D picture. (The initial box-office figures that come out on Sunday are based on actual ticket sales for Friday and Saturday and the studio’s best guess of Sunday’s grosses.) The “Avatar” tally is a whisker ahead of “I Am Legend,” which opened in 2007 to $77.2 million in domestic sales and held the December record, although that does not account for inflation.
The powerful snow storm that pummeled the East Coast over the weekend took a significant bite out of Saturday sales for “Avatar,” with analysts referring to the initial total as “solid but unspectacular,” especially given the movie’s jaw-dropping cost (some $460 million to produce and market, before deducting about $30 million in tax benefits). It was a different story overseas, where “Avatar,” directed by James Cameron, sold a strong $159 million in 106 countries with several big markets – Japan and China – still to come.

Court Rejects Polanski Move to Have Case Dismissed

A California appeals court has rejected Roman Polanski's bid to have his sex case dismissed.
The California 2nd District Court of Appeal announced Monday it had denied the petition, with justices saying they are "deeply concerned" about the alleged misconduct.
"We encourage all participating parties to do their utmost to ensure that this matter now draws to a close in a manner that fully addresses the issues of due process and fundamental fairness raised by the events of long ago," the court's opinion stated.
Attorneys for the fugitive director argued earlier this month that misconduct in the case was grounds for dismissal of a charge of having unlawful sex with a minor. They also contended Polanski didn't need to be present to argue for dismissal.
The court disagreed on both issues.
"The passage of more time before this case's final resolution will further hamper the search for truth and the delivery of any appropriate relief, and it will also prolong the agony that the lack of finality in this matter continues to cause Samantha Geimer," the opinion states.
Polanski fled the United States in 1978 on the eve of sentencing. He pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual contact with a minor.
He remains under house arrest at his Swiss chalet.
A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's office had no immediate comment on the ruling. She said attorneys were still reading through the 70-page opinion.
A message was left with Polanski attorney Chad Hummel.
