Hi All, Not quite sure how to change journals on here but hey here goes. We just had a massive rainstorm - well we'd call it that, living in the UK and all that. As a result, I'm discovering my need to use an online feedreader - I'd luv to be able to hop onto any computer and get MY weather from MY favourite site. any ideas? Thanks!

Report [19 Aug 2008|11:55pm]

Welcome to the next chapter in the book of my life!
I am reporting live from my room in North Spencer Residence Hall on The University Of North Carolina At Greensboro Campus! Moving everything in and setting everything up took about 3 hours, with the entire process going very smoothly. I absolutely love my room, it is perfect for Sunny and I. Having a sink is wonderful, having 2 walk in closets is fabulous, having 2 dressers and 2 desks makes storing everything very easy, and so on. My beds are bunked with 1 being on top of the other, and Sunny loves lying under the bottom bunk. Sunny will be sleeping on the floor from now on, because her shedding is causing my asthma and allergies going out of control. Mom was correct when she speculated that Sunny sleeping with me would create allergy and asthma problems, but as long as I take preventative medications and I am not breathing in Sunny fur I am all right.
I went out to lunch with Carolyn, Michael, and Carolyn's parents, and later on in the evening I ventured over to Grogan Residence Hall with Logan. I reunited with old friends and made new friends, and after I removed her harness Sunny was petted and loved on by everyone. People are still moving in and settling in, thus until classes begin things will be crazy.
Love,
Kolby

What the who!? [21 Aug 2008|04:57pm]

Is it really Thursday already? Is it really Thursday of week 3 already? Dear Lord, time has gone quickly.

Family will be in Perth tomorrow. Yay! I have work on Saturday, but I am not staying for long, so hopefully will hang out with family in the afternoon. Huzzah!

I rode to uni today. It was a good ride; really warmed me up from this slightly chilly day and also possibly counter-acted all the sour worms I ate yesterday. So tasty, but so bad for me!

Big prayers to [info]alyssea who was recently in a serious car crash. I pray you heal quickly and without stress or too much depression while you're laid under.

A very close friend of mine has seriously hurt me. Her name is Angela, and I was the matron of honor in her wedding in June. We've been friends for a very long time, nearly twelve years now. I've stuck by her through practically everything, been loyal and done my best to make this friendship work. I just...

Doro HandleEasy 330gsm [20 Aug 2008|02:10pm]

blindpeople

[slyfoot]
Sorry to post twice in one day, but I am really trying to find a decent cell phone that I can see clearly with text messaging. I can speak, but I am deaf as well as visually impaired so it's twice as hard to find a phone that works for me.

Can anyone tell me if Doro HandleEasy 330gsm mobile phone can actually be used in the United States? I have been searching high and low and this is the most awesome phone for visually impaired that I have seen yet, and it includes SMS... but it looks like it's only available for the UK.

Trying to find a suitable phone that I can SEE is giving me a massive headache. I have never had a cell phone before, so I feel kind of clueless. Somebody please tell me if I can use this in the US... if not, can anyone recommend a cell phone with a display and keypad that is as good as this?

Drug delemmas [20 Aug 2008|01:09pm]

puppybraille
I came across an article which says that
Fruit juices block common drugs
in the article, the researchers explain that they're starting to figure out which chemicals in fruit juices interfere with the absorbtion of some medications. They also state that it's likely that this is a bigger problem than we realize.

The last quote from the researcher says that people should only take their medications with water. If I did that, I'd never take my medication. Pills get chased down with either coffee or soda a lot of the time. If they think they're changing that, they will have another thing coming. I'd also argue that maybe water isn't the best choice either. With all of the discussions of
drugs in the water
it probably isn't safe to take the pills with water. You can argue that the levels are small, but I wonder how much of the small amounts of medications are interfering with drugs we're taking intentionally and we just don't know it.

Good Cell Phones For Visually Impaired [20 Aug 2008|12:39pm]

blindpeople

[slyfoot]
Hey folks.

I have never had a cell phone before so I feel a bit lost. I am deaf, so all I really want is a phone that I can speak into and that will allow me to do text messaging with large fonts and bright text on a black background, sort of like a CCTV using reverse video. That seems pretty straightforward but I am going a little bit crazy trying to find a phone that will do just that. Can anyone recommend a cell phone like this? We use AT&T, but I'd prefer a phone that isn't locked to a specific service.

Thanks!

out and about [20 Aug 2008|06:49pm]

Today I was out and about. I went and had my legs waxed FINALLY! They were man legs, now they're women's legs again. Hurrah! Then I bought a new car stereo for cheaps (and later tried to install it by myself for free. FAILS!). I went into the city, to Target to see about getting my mp3 replaced because it broke and it's under warranty. I read the first two chapters of New Moon at Borders, but didn't buy it. Then I visited Lisey at hospital and that was nice. I ate too many sour worms and felt a little ill. DAMN WORMS! so tasty though...

Although the car stereo installing didn't work out so great, I was pleased by how far I got. I managed to take off the front panel (which was hard work!!) and take out the old one, but the cables and cords for the new one were rather different and I think needs a look at by an experience mechanic/electrician. I put in the new one anyway, I just didn't hook it up at the back. Then I put everything back in its place. I hope I didn't forget any screws. That would be SCREWY! HAH!

Capslock ftw.

Last night I went to Dawn's house because I thought something was on, but it was cancelled last minute and my phone was dead so I didn't know. However, she felt so bad about it (I was rather embarrassed too) that she gave me free dinner and afterwards we went out for half price waffles at Gelare. YUM!

new walks [19 Aug 2008|09:43pm]

Yesterday I went to seattle to meet Butterfly for lunch. We had a great talk as always and the lunch was yummy fish and chips. After lunch we went for a walk along the seattle waterfront about 2 miles total. ellie did some sniffing and some veering to the right I think she may have been trying to take me around cracks but I'm not sure. She was slow on the way back. Overall, I was pleased with her work. She ignored dogs very well. We did one round of obedience just because she was distracted by something and I couldn't get her focus. But considering the number of new smells especially since it had rained she did a nice job for me. The walk was enjoyable flat and open and again the conversation was great. We stopped for icecream on the way bac and then I needed the restroom so we went in to the aquarium. It was wierd because we asked for the bathroom and the people at the desk told us which way to go. So, as we are walking down the hall they come over the loudspeaker and anounce that there is a seeing eye dog in the building! What on earth! Why did that need an anouncement? Were they afraid she'd bite the dolphins? LOL. I had an enjoyable ride home on the ferry talking with a friend's mom who I ran in to a t the ferry terminal. Today a few of us from the PCB went to a town about an hour from my home for a short walk. This town has several little shops over a 2 or so block walk. Ellie was super sniffy and got some hard corrections and her nose lifted off a few objects. She really stressed me and i know my voice and body showed it, but damn it! it is not necessary to sniff every damn poll and corner of every building. When she wasn't sniffing her work was marvelous. We went in to a bakery and I was proud that I did not buy a doughnut or anything else for that matter. I did take a bite of someone's though chocolate and peanutbutter yum! Then we went to a cool store called good scents. This is a natural bath and body type store. They had soaps, perfumes, bath beads, oils, air fresheners and everything else you can think of in just about any scent you can think of, lavender, mango, cherry, vanilla, rose, chcolate, and on and on. She will custom make things for you too. She made me some Jasmine shower gell and man is it awesome smelling. She uses all natural engreedients too. It is a place i will go back too if I ever have the oportunity. Then we went to lunch at a little place nearby. I had a chicken sandwich which was really small only about the size of a half a sandwich, but it was good. I had to wait forever for my bus almost an hour after everyone else got to leave. I just love living at the other end of the county! I got home and found a message from the diabetes education coordinator. i have an appointment on September 2nd at 9 AM. I have to start keeping a food journal for them to review. I guess that means i have to start being good. All right, I'm off to figure out why certain files did not download off my Olympus and work a bit on my APH museum podcast.

A few words from the intern, ewok_626:

Dear friends,

I can't believe that you are sitting here online while the Olympics are on TV!  Go root for Team USA!  And for our non-American friends, keep rooting that your country earns those medals!

I was always amazed by the Olympics.  How all of the countries can come together and put their differences aside to compete.  How they can become friends with people they've never known before but bond because they share a love for their sport?

Wait, isn't that what Idol does, too?!  We put our differences aside to compete for that treasured icon (and bragging rights)!  We become friends with people from other countries, too!  (*sends out Aussie and UK love*)  We meet because we love to write.  And even when the competition is through, we are still friends.  Isn't that amazing?!

The questions of the day:
~What is your favorite Olympic event?
~What event do you think the IOC should add?
~What event should the IOC get rid of?
~If you could compete in an Olympic event, what would it be?
~Do you miss clicky boxes?

Only 13 more days until September... So in 13 days, be watching for the Idol sign-ups!  Encourage your friends to stop by and see what we're about!  Challenge them to get their creative juices flowing!  Come for the competition.  Stay for the people.

Talking Glucose Meters? [19 Aug 2008|02:52am]

Hi all. I am at risk for diabetes, although at this point my blood sugar is always perfect. Because of my extensive family history of diabetes, I'm pretty much doomed, and probably sooner rather than later. What I'm wondering is, where do you blind diabetics get your glucose meters, and did Medicare or Medicaid pay for it? Thanks.

Please Pray? Bad insomnia. [18 Aug 2008|07:10pm]

ladyevidence
Ok, when I say "bad", I mean "really, drive-you-crazy bad".

I was a bad insomniac for nearly 9 years, but I've slept so very wonderfully for the last 4 months! There really wasn't any problems, since I started taking Chaste Tree Berry for my PCOS. Then, this last week or so, it's hit HARD. Two nights in a row where I don't think I got 3 hours of sleep between them. Then, I slept 8 hours the next night, but the night after that, I couldn't sleep at all. I did everything I could think of, but if I did get to sleep, it was for 20 minutes, and then I'd be wide-awake again!

I've been taking my Chaste Tree, I haven't been having caffeine, I don't feel like I've done anything different.

The only thing I can think of is that whole incident about my friend's house being broken into, and the fact that my husband has been in the field a LOT lately (grah, all this week, he's gone).

Whatever the case may be, please pray for me. I really can't take this. My eyes haven't stopped burning in 4 days, and it just makes me feel so ill.

I can't take my ambien, because it doesn't work against the kind of insomnia where you wake up, it only makes you fall asleep initially. I could take over-the-counter stuff, but it makes me so "out of it" the next day. Maybe I'll try 1/2 or 1/4 of a dose? I just want sleep...

Thank you for your prayers!!!

A Cane Question [18 Aug 2008|09:45pm]

blindpeople

[johnmill79]
Hi folks,

My cane met an unfortunate end, having been bent nearly double by somebody's car. At the moment, I'm getting by with a cobbled together spare that's likely to disentegrate at any minute, so I must do something about that quickly.

My question is: do you know of any websites that provide fairly cheap canes? Well compared to, say, Independend Living Aids, which charges like $30 for theirs. I'm tired of buying those, because I always seem to lose them! I guess if there are no other options, I will have to pony up again. I just thought I'd check first. Any suggestions you guys might have would be appreciated.

Thanks.
