Vote - Week 1

A few words from clauderainsrm:

In a mini-season that is all about moving quickly - LJ going down on the day of the original deadline was ill-timed to say the least.

But, we internet folk are tough, we figured it out and got through Week 1! Or rather, we are about to officially do that.

Welcome to the first poll of LJ Idol! Sure, you had a Week 0, but that was just the warm-up! This is for real!

Two of your fellow contestants were not able to get their entries in this week. Fortunately, for them - for all of you really, we ARE having “Second Chance Idol”. That means, from now until I say otherwise, if you are eliminated in the main poll, you get one more shot to hang on!

Which means, Welcome to SCI to:

pipistrelle and ugawa

In a couple days, you will have EIGHT more friends!

Yes, that means that we are losing the eight contestants with the entries that receive the fewest votes.
Even though it is an Intersection, this time around, all entries will be completely on their own. (no adding totals, unlike some Intersection weeks in the past)

Having a good partner to bounce ideas with is extremely valuable when it comes to the creative process. Who made it pay off for them?

I guess we are about to find out!

The poll will be closing Wednesday, May 22nd at 9pm EDT. So I hope you have been keeping up on your reading!

Read! Comment! and Vote! for your favorites!

Good luck to everyone!

“Janice! Janice? Janice, I’m home! What’s for dinner?”

My arms were full of clean washing, so I was struggling with the back door when I heard my husband’s usual 6pm greeting from the hallway. He probably heard me. I’m always in the yard at this time of day, either sweeping or weeding the flower-tubs, or bringing in the washing like today.

“Nigel! Nigel?” I called. Would he come and help me? Would he ever come and help me? Or, as per usual, did he think I was shouting for the good of my health? Oh! No, he’s sitting in his chair like it’s a throne, taking off his boots without a care in the world. Leaving them in the middle of the floor to get tripped over, probably, and I very much doubt he’ll have wiped his feet! Thirty-eight years of marriage, and he’s never once wiped his feet! I don’t know why I bother sometimes! I don’t know why I end up down on my hands and knees with a stiff brush when he leaves for work, trying to get last night’s dirt out of the carpet. I don’t know why I bother going over it every morning with the carpet cleaner, only to have the muddy boots trampled all over it again a few hours later.

Even taking them off in the hallway would be a big help. But does that thought occur to him? No. No, it does not. If I haven’t even managed to get him to wipe his feet, why would I be able to get him to take his boots off in the hallway, or better still, on the porch?

Well, I say “get him to,” the man’s got eyes in his head, and it astounds me why he’d never think to use them and notice these things for himself sometimes. One of these days. I keep telling myself this, one of these days. One of these days, one day, he’ll notice. He must do. Sometimes that fellow lives in a world of his own.

There’s an almost-finished pile of folded clothes on the kitchen table by the time he finally ambles in to where I am, padding around in his socks, getting a beer out of the fridge and leaving the half-empty can on the worktop. That he never noticed he’d left out. Like he never even noticed that his socks need darning too, and I’ll have to hunt them out later to do it instead of just reaching into my mending basket, where I manage to put any clothes that need mending, so why can’t he?

Well, I’m not going to. He can bloody have new socks for a change, and he can bloody go and buy them for himself for once, too!

I heaved a big sigh. No, I’ll buy his socks. I am his wife, after all.

“Janice, love, what’s for tea? Is it sausages?” my husband asks, as he picks up his newspaper.

His feet are up on the – clean! – glass coffee table and half his attention has gone as he’s sitting back, cool as a cucumber, by the time I follow him through.

“I’ve made chicken stew with dumplings, Nigel, but would you really like sausages? I can freeze the casserole if I have to. Oh, and we can use some of your peas to go with it?”

“Ah, thanks Janice, you’re a gem,” he smiles. “Come here and give us a smooch.”

One last thing for the day...

I'm with ecosopher.  There are four days left--make a donation of $50 or more to this campaign, report back here, and I'll send you some of my delicious Russian Tea cookies as a thank-you.  These cookies have become the stuff of legend.  Just go for it--you'll be helping a business and a businesswoman I believe in.  :)

I have a friend (haha, I know -- bear with me) and this friend... you know, she's that kind of person where you think, how is all this bullshit happening to you right now, and how are you still going, still able to see the silver lining? How is it you haven't given up and fallen in a heap? I mean, don't get me wrong, she's got some lovely people in her life, and she's talented and funny and caring. But life and work has really been a drag for her over the last 12 months.

And of course, being her, she doesn't fall in a heap. She gets back up again and starts her own business.

That's just the kind of person she is.

She's taking on a small publishing house which has already had some successful and exciting publications, and has some innovative ideas about where she wants to take it.

How cool is that?! A publishing house!

Obviously, jumping from unemployed to managing a publishing business brings some financial challenges, and so she's set up an Indiegogo campaign so that she can raise some money to help pay for the costs of starting up. This is why I really want to boost the signal. The campaign only has a few days left to run, and it could really use some more support. And I know that there are a lot of campaigns out there and sometimes people get donor fatigue, but I really wanted to bring this one to your attention. Obviously I'm biased because it's my friend, but I think you'll agree that she's got a pretty small goal to reach, and every little bit counts (plus there are some rather decent perks in there, too).

Interested?

And well, I want to see this business succeed, because it was the business which put out the book I'm in :)

Green Room - Week 1 - Day 07

Here is your Green Room.

Here is your link to the topic post, which is due TONIGHT: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/652241.html

Here is Monday. You can’t give it back. You just have to make the best of it.

btw - if there is anyone in a strange and distant land (meaning anywhere other than my apartment) who is interested in showing a globetrotting ceramic gnome/adventurer a good time in their city, please let me know!

I'm looking to expand his horizons and have his picture posted on facebook in new and interesting places! :)
This piece intersects with that of the talented and utterly fabulous malruniel11! You can find her rendering of this story by clicking here.  These pieces can be read in either order.

"Here she comes!" Becky whispers.

I glance to my left and see her approaching, her eyes cast down toward the floor, her arms clutching her schoolbooks to her chest.

Green Room - Week 1 - Day 6

I was at Epcot yesterday, and in front of the Chinese area, there were a bunch of guys (and a couple girls) who I will stereotype and call "Jock-type". Which of course is horrible of me to place them in a category like that, as especially to assume that all people of a certain "look" are a certain way.

More to the point though, they were everything that people stereotype about that group. Which pretty much means their true grouping would be in the "asshole" category.

What were they doing to deserve this title? They were taking a picture in front of China - and using their fingers to pull the sides of their eyes. I'm not sure if that's a good enough description, but hopefully people know what I'm taking about.

I'd never actually seen that it person - at least not since elementary school - and I was in a really small town who had never actually seen a Chinese person. On the other hand, these "people" were in the middle of a place dedicated to diversity, in an specific area devoted to China, surrounded by Chinese cast members!

I wanted bad things to happen to them. It was pointed out to me though, that bad things *were* happening to them, every single day that I had to wake up and be that ignorant and unaware of who they are and how they are perceived.

I'd still like to order a drone attack.

In other news, you have one more day until the deadline! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/652241.html

Green Room - Week 1 - Day 5

Welcome to the Week That LJ Will Not Allow to End!

Hopefully you are taking advantage of LJ actually being up to get some work done! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/652241.html

How is your weekend going?

Green Room - Week 1 - Day 4

What I was saying before we were so rudely interrupted, is that the deadline for Week 1 submissions is Monday, May 20th at 8pm EDT. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/652241.html

I understand that there are still folks without a partner, now would be the time to correct that!

Don't just sit around complaining about Charles Clymer, actually *do* something - like post your entries! ;)

Hopefully everyone can check out the Idol Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/LJ-Idol/120173881339154?fref=ts which seems silly to update a social media page *about* a social media site. But in times like these when LJ goes totally wonky and I need to get a message out to the masses, that would be where I would post it. I also try to post links to Idol polls, so it's an easy way to "share" them, for those of you into such things.

In other news: Mischief Managed. Let's just say that the special mini-seasons have served their intended purpose. Now it is a matter of timing!

So thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

Green Room - Week 1 - Day 2

Hopefully, everyone is paired up and getting to work – but if you are not, it’s time to raise your hand and see who else is in need of a dance partner! We should have an even amount of people, so no one should be left sitting on the sidelines. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/652241.html

Special note to Idol Veterans – most of you remember what it was like your first time through, so do your part and grab up a newbie to show them the ropes!
Special note to Newbies – use that rope to ultimately hang that veteran and grab your victory!

Special note to special notes: Remember to use your “inside voice” so that no one knows the plan!
