America the Beautiful

Recital
No matter who you wanted to be put into office today, please recognize the historical nature of this moment. 100 years ago in his inauguration speach, Taft said, "Negros are Americans." Now, it is possible for the son of an African immigrant to be President of the United States. This is the realization of Dr. King's dream, the picture of freedom, the escence of democracy. Whether you agree with his politics or not, rejoyce that we live in a land where this is possible. Rejoyce that so many children growing up in situations most of us can not understand will look at this man and say, "I can do that too." Dare to hope that though this world is fallen and nothing wil ever be perfect, that things will change for the better.

Those of you who are Christians, if you oppose his ideas, don't forget that God expects us to respect our leaders and to pray for them. Prayer is powerful, and changes things. Pray that Obama will lead this nation with patience, wisdom, and that he will seak wise council and God's guidance. Do not let bitterness take root in your heart. Rise above those feelings and stand behind your leaders.

I am moved deeply by this moment, and hope you are too.

I'd never heard the Taft quote before. Wow. I guess we have come a long way, and I hope change continues to shake up this society.

We watched the speech this (now yesterday) morning. It was one of the best I've ever heard. I have hope that he can carry through on what he says, but it'll be a hard road, and he'll need the help of many to actually accomplish it. I particularly liked the benediction. I think I'm going to go find a transcript of that. Actually I can probably find a copy of the entire enoguration if I look for it, video and all. I think I'll try to find that.

I thought what Archbishop Gene Robinson said in his prayer on Sunday was very appropriate; he said something along the lines of "Remember, Barack Obama is a human being, not a messiah." It is easy to swing the other direction from the detractors and place too much pressure and hope on one man's shoulders. We need to remember that the work has only just begun, and that we must all take part if we want to see change.
