Can someone take a look at my final draft of my SOP? You can send me a message and I will place it in the reply.
I am hoping it is good enough to pull me into a grad program.
Thanks |

Hi all..this is a question for those of you who do full-time contract work through an agency. As a full-time employee of an agency, do you get health benefits/insurance or any type of 403b etc? I am weighing out my options before applying for new jobs and was wondering. Thank you! |

| Praxis anxiety! |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|06:56 pm]
|
I recently took the Praxis on June 8th. In my opinion, it was terrible. I used the Advanced Review book and a set of Mosby's flashcards and took a total of 6 practice tests to prepare. Going in, I felt confident but coming out, I felt like I bombed. I had no time to go back and check my answers or even make sure I kept with the same numbers. Does anyone have any words of comfort? I know the test is adjusted for difficulty and a scaled score is given. Just wondering, in the past, does anyone remember how many questions they may have missed and still passed? Our program uses this for comps and we have to pass to graduate so the extra stress really stinks. Thanks for any advice you can give me! |

| Lip frenulum |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|04:38 pm]
|
Hey everyone,
Lurker-turned-poster here, now that I've started work in Early Intervention and am frequently running into situations that are completely new for me!
Has anyone ever dealt with a case of an attached lip frenulum? I started seeing a little girl who is highly unintelligible and does not have errors that fall into any clear phonological pattern. Her upper lip is noticeably pulled upward, and she has a large gap in her front teeth. While she is able to occlude her lips to produce plosives, she does not do so consistently. Her dentist says she has an attached upper lip frenulum, and recommends having it cut. Has anyone had a client who underwent this procedure? Was it worth it? Was it painful to recover from, and did it have a large impact on speech? I've heard conflicting things on the actual extent that a short tongue frenulum can affect speech, and while it seems reasonable to me that this could be important for my client I'm not 100% sure how to advise her mother.
Thanks! |

| Change of settings |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|03:21 pm]
|
Hi everyone,
Has anyone here changed settings from adults to children? How hard was the adjustment? I went through grad school with no plans for working with kids, just adults. I do have experience working with them because it was more of a school-based program, but would have some major brushing up to do.
Thanks! |

| Praxis Advice |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|03:08 pm]
|
Hi all,
I'm graduating with my Master's in August and was hoping to find some advice as to exactly which Praxis tests I should take.
I already took the Praxis specifically for Speech Pathology, but I have heard mixed opinions as to whether or not a general test is also needed. When I try to look on state websites for license requirements most just say "pass the national Praxis exam"--- so I'm not sure which version they are referring to.
I'm most likely applying in New Jersey but I am open to relocating, so all insights are welcome! Especially if anyone knows if we even need the state license before completing the CFY.
Thanks for your time!! |

| Need some information on working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing population |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|12:49 pm]

Hi everyone, I am taking a class this summer on Aural Rehabilitation. If any current SLP has time, could you answer a few questions for a paper that I'm writing: QUESTIONS FOR INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSIONAL THAT WORKS WITH CHILDREN WITH HEARING LOSS 1. What is your role in working with children with hearing loss, or more specifically, what are your duties that involve children with hearing loss? 2. When you work with children who have hearing loss, what are the two or three consequences or effects of the hearing loss that you think have the biggest impact on the child’s life? 3. Do you think that children with hearing loss are being adequately served in the area where you work? 4. What kinds of things would you like to see happen differently for children with hearing loss where you work? 5. If you are familiar with the speech and language services that children with hearing loss receive in your school or community, do you think that these services are meeting the needs of the students? Why do you think this? 6. If you are aware of the hearing related services that children with hearing loss are receiving in the schools or community where you are, do you think that these services are meeting the needs of the students? Why do you think this? 7. Do you have anything that you would like to see done differently by people who work with kids with hearing loss? (e.g. programs, funding, devices, etc
Thanks so much |

| Resume Advice |
[Jun. 17th, 2013|05:08 am]
|
I am now primarily looking for a career in another field, largely since I have had such a difficult time finding a CFY that I am in dire financial straits and need ANY job that will hire me soon. However, I actually recently found a somewhat local (an hour away) opening a place that is willing to consider a CFY and decided to send out my resume for it. I plan to continue to send out resumes if I come across more somewhat local speech positions that are open to CFs. Therefore, I want to try to make sure my resume is in good shape so that I can increase my odds of securing a position.
I was just wondering how long the speech resumes of people on here are, especially those of you who have managed to secure a CFY position? I am not sure what the guidelines are for speech, but I have heard that for other fields, it's best to stick to a one-page resume. I am a little bit older so I have some prior work experience as a writer, but am not sure whether I should include that because it causes my resume to be 2 full pages long. I'm only able to keep it on one page if I don't include the writing experience. Any thoughts? Thanks! |

| ASHA Certification courses....grade? |
[Jun. 16th, 2013|09:46 pm]
|
Hi everyone!
This community is always so helpful, and I was hoping that someone has time to answer a quick question:
I'm currently enrolled in graduate school, and I'm simultaneously working on getting all of my background courses for my CCC's (namely, biology, physics/chemistry, and stats) at a nearby community college. Since I'm putting most of my energy into my grad school work, I'm not keeping up as easily as I should be with my background courses. I've searched all over ASHA's site, and I can't seem to find if they require a specific grade, or whether it's on a pass/fail basis. Does anyone know if we need to have a certain grade to have the classes count for our certification? |

| CFY jobs |

Hello!
I am currently on the hunt for a CF position and am not having any luck whatsoever. I have put out probably close to 20 applications over the past few weeks and haven't heard a peep from anyone. I've been applying in a few different states in all kinds of settings too. Ideally, I would prefer a medical setting because I am more interested in that than a school but since I never had a medical placement in grad school and have zero experience whatsoever, I'm not holding my breath on snagging something like that. I'm trying to keep my options open.
Is anyone else having difficulties finding a CF position? Am I just being impatient by thinking I should have heard from someone, anyone by now?
Thanks for any advice or input! Sorry if this has been asked before...I'm about to make my way through the tags now. |

Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm currently living in Texas, in my second year of grad school, and I'm starting to think about CF positions. I ideally want to work with Adults in a medical setting, so I was thinking about going for a SNF CF job and then doing PRN at a hospital/rehab facility to get my foot in the door. However, my boyfriend just accepted an offer for the MPA program at NYU. I would love to move to NY but I'm afraid I'll never be able to get a job without the TSSLD requirement, and the thought of taking more school and having to put off starting to pay my student loans even longer is TERRIFYING. Any advice? Is there any way I can work on some of the TSSLD requirements? I've tried researching on the NY Department of Education, but it's not very clear to me even what the requirements would be or how I would go about fulfilling them if I already have a master's degree. I'm thinking that SNF would be the only safe bet that wouldn't require the TSSLD but it seems like those jobs are few and far between. :( |

| from schools to PRN SNF |
[Jun. 13th, 2013|08:59 pm]
|
I completed my CFY in the schools and earned my CCCs in December of last year. Since then, I have stayed in the schools along with some work in a peds outpatient clinic. My passion is with peds, but I did an externship in acute care with adults during grad school and am interested in supplementing my income and keeping up my adult skills. I have an interview for a PRN position in a SNF. Any suggestions for specific resources for brushing up on dysphagia, cognitive therapy, etc., would be greatly appreciated, as well as any information on what to expect in this setting. Thanks in advance! |
