| Mini Dream Catcher |
[21 May 2013|10:26pm] |
Made this last night. It's now hanging in my car. I'd like to get some different feathers for it eventually but the only thing the local walmart has is those kinds. So that will have to wait 'til my trip in to the city. I also want to get some elastic bands or thread of some kind so that I can actually take the thing on and off my car mirror.
I also have a question! The long "grizzly feathers" you see people wear in their hair...can you find those in craft stores or would they just be available a specialty beauty shops?

Hello! I'm a rather new sewer, having mastered things like purses and PJ pants, and I'm having my hand at Barbie clothes for my niece right now. I've made a few successful things so far!
I'm making Dress A from McCall's M6258 (link below), and I've got the bodice all sewn together (It was in 8 panels). Now that I'm looking to attach the straps, though, the instructions threw me a curve ball (my commentary in parentheses).
"Pin ends of strap to upper edge of bodice, centering over squares. baste. (No problems here) For lining, prepare remaining bodice sections in same manner, disregarding reference to straps for View A (???). Pin lining to bodice, having right sides together and matching seams. stitch along upper and left back opening edge, pivoting at small circle (which I have marked). Clip to small circle. UNDERSTITCH lining."
I'm confused because there seem to be no remaining bodice sections left. I can cut out more, certainly, but the lining part throws me. Am I just going to make another copy of the bodice and sew them together right sides facing each other? What's going on?

Thanks so much in advance.

| Rip-stop nylon |
[20 May 2013|10:04pm] |
I'm going to be sewing a few pairs of poi tails (description and picture) using rip-stop nylon.
Any tips or tricks for machine-sewing with this material? I've never worked with it before. Anything I should be aware of before starting?

I am getting brave! 2nd post! I created these two over the weekend as a little pick me up break between 'real life' work. Thinking about trying to complete a whole set of characters. Got my eye on Princess Bubblegum and Gunther next!

| issues with the third dimension |
[19 May 2013|01:19pm] |
Sorry for the stupid question. I'm super new at this whole sewing thing.
Basically I'm trying to make a cute little bag to put my mp3 player in when I carry it in my purse, but trying to resize everything to fit the dimensions of mine is confounding me. I'm fairly certain the original dimensions were for a Nano or some equally small, thin player.
This is what my mp3 player looks like. As you can see, it's a wee bit thicker than a Nano. So what I'm having trouble with is how to alter the pattern so mine will fit in the bag. It's obviously going to have to be bigger than just width + height + seam allowances, but I'm struggling to figure out how much more I need to add.
The actual dimensions are 1.36" x 2.16" x .60"
Thanks for helping me out. I'm fairly helpless. :/

Now, it's not perfect by any means but considering it was my very first project all by myself I think it could have been a lot worse. I even think the peculiarities of it give it some extra personality. I'll get better--I already am! I want to thank everyone here for answering my various questions and helping me out.

In about an hour I will be leaving for the big event. Here are the last items:
( First Verse, complete! (but no mittens)Collapse )

The only thing I skipped was the 'warm woolen mittens', which I think would've been bad luck anyway. Given that just two weeks ago we had 14 inches of snow an hour south of here!

| Diggin up the oldies: 1953 singers |
[17 May 2013|01:30pm] |
Hello! I came across your group through a previous serger search so I'm hoping that I might be able to find someone here that knows more of these classic characters better than I.
I purchased an old 1953 Singer industrial serger about a year ago and have been rewiring it since (the original plug was a disaster!). I have a rough photocopy of the manual but nothing more. I've used various sewing machines but never a serger in my life so when I finally turned this beast on I was more than a little intimidated. The motor sound whirred and hummed, sending the vibrations into the floor. I tested the main pedal to see just how fast it really did go and boy did it go!
I know the main 'head' of the machine needs oil, the reservoir being completely dry. The pully (belt driven) cries out if I take it too slow but other than that and a few million vintage dust bunnies that I;m trying to evict from the serger, all seems ok.
My trouble now is I haven't a clue how to thread the blasted thing. It's a powerful serger that will fly through the heavy materials I work with and needles seem to still be in supply long after it was decommissioned from the factories but for all the digging I have done, I cannot seem to find anyone that can show me how to thread it, online or locally.
If you're curious to see it, here;s a shot of when we first brought it home:
Does anyone here have thoughts or ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

| Shoes |
[16 May 2013|10:02am] |
Never tried this before, and am frankly a bit intimidated by the cool costumes that've been posted of late. But I'm pleased with how these turned out on the whole.
Here are the shoes for my now-complete costume for the Sing Along Sound of Music on Saturday. Someone guessed that I'm going as 'girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes' and they were correct. I've also hit a few other items from the song with the overall ensemble. It's either clever or lame; I'm never sure which. The shoes were done with mod-podge, distressed lunch bags, nail polish, craft string.

Brown paper packages, tied up with strings.

| New Banners |
[15 May 2013|04:55pm] |
I haven't posted for a long time, mainly because I haven't been crafting. Something about winter drains my creativity by February. With the (mostly) spring weather, though, I'm getting started again. First up - I've had an idea for a while for Pentecost banners for my church. For any who don't know, Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came down to the apostles, looking like tongues of flame above their heads. The liturgical color for that Sunday is red, so I used that as a starting point. I found lightweight, crinkly red fabric for the main background. Then I added coppery silk and a see-through orange fabric with red glittery dots, which I cut into strips to provide more movement. I wanted to portray the flow and swirl of the flames. These are smaller banners to be hung as the side of the aisles. I will make four in total (we have four hooks), but due to time, I've only finished two for this Sunday (Pentecost). It was a challenge to take what I could clearly picture in my mind and try to create something similar for real, but I'm pleased with the results.
Let me know what you think:

| DIY Pretty placemat pillows |
[13 May 2013|10:57pm] |
|
This has to be one of the simplest DIY projects I have done yet. Everything is pretty much already done for you. Lucky for me I found this 4 pack of place-mats at Target and they matched my decor perfectly. Woohoo! I really said that in the store and people were staring at me.
The things you will need: place-mats that have a front and back a seam ripper Stuffing fluff thread & needle scissors
- Open up your seem
- stuff your pillow with fluff
- sew it closed
It took me longer to stuff the pillows with the fluff than anything.
Not to shabby for new pillows out of place-mats . I really like them and they are way better than what was originally on my couch.

| What I made |
[12 May 2013|08:57pm] |
|
So I haven't posted here but I'm pretty proud of this so I wanted to share. A simple pillowcase dress for my 15 month old daughter. I just got a new fancy sewing machine and I haven't actually made any clothing since I was in the 6th grade. The majority of my sewing has been curtains, pillowcases and some baby blankets. I didn't use a pattern for this, just traced another dress of hers and allowed for seams and hemming. Only took about 35 mins to make (took longer to figure out how to thread the new machine!) :)

| Some knitted things and first crochet project |
[12 May 2013|06:12pm] |
Heya, this is my first time posting something here... So, just before christmas holiday last year, I knitted some... I'll just call them keychains. I asked the people I made them for which country they like and made these. I made an Ireland, Greece, Japan, Poland, Iceland, England, Scotland, another England and a Wales flag. The Scotland one and one England keychain went to my sisters and I kept Wales for myself =)

And, I crocheted the first time (the times with my grandmother don't count, I already forget those lessons...) and made a "Plue" from Fairy Tail for an upcoming birthday of a friend. It's not exactly as I thought it might be, but it was my first time and for that, it's not that bad.

Well then, I might do some more crocheting and then I'll post pictures of those... Wanted to make something for my mother (but I see her in a week, later than the birthday, so I made this first) and for my sisters... And something for myself, so, I am going to busy myself ^^
