Thanks in part to suicide guides, sites and clubs on the internet, Japan is in the midst of a suicide epidemic. Hundreds of Japanese have killed themselves this year by mixing ordinary household chemicals into a lethal cloud of poison gas that often injures others and forces the evacuation of entire apartment blocks.
The 517 self-inflicted deaths by hydrogen sulfide poisoning this year are part of a bigger, grimmer story: Nearly 34,000 Japanese killed themselves last year, according to the Japanese national police. That's the second-highest toll ever in a country where the suicide rate is ninth highest in the world and more than double that of the USA, the World Health Organization says.
Suicidal man on fifth story ledge finally decides not to jump, but then while trying to get down, slips and falls to concrete. He's in critical condition.

Quick note about some of the stuff I post here: Almost all of it is from the same few handful of sites most of you savvy weblurkers know about, but a lot of what I put up here are for the benefit of some of my friends who don't really know what the internet is about and would never hear about this neat stuff if I didn't tell them. So it's really for the benefit of some of the n00bs in my life.
That said, here's today's dose of amusing internet miscellanea:

Creative suicides are another bizarre artifact of modern Japanese culture, apparently.
TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A 14-year-old Japanese girl killed herself by mixing laundry detergent with cleanser, releasing fumes that also sickened 90 people in her apartment house, police said Thursday as they grappled with a spate of similar suicides.
The deadly hydrogen sulfide gas escaped from the girl's bathroom window and entered neighboring apartments.
The girl's suicide Wednesday night was part of an expanding string of similar deaths that experts say have been encouraged by Internet suicide sites since last summer.
A 31-year-old man outside Tokyo killed himself inside a car early Thursday by mixing detergent and bath salts, police said. A local police spokesman refused to give further details, but Kyodo News agency reported that the man put a sign reading "Stay Away" on the car window.
At a business hotel in Shiga prefecture in western Japan, a man in his 30s was found dead Thursday morning by employees who noticed a strange smell coming from his room, according to national broadcaster NHK. Shiga police said officials are investigating the incident as a case of suicide by hydrogen sulfide gas but could not elaborate.
Reports of another similar death emerged Thusday afternoon when the body of a 42-year-old woman in Nagoya, central Japan, was found in a bathtub. According to Kyodo, there was toilet cleaner and bath powder nearby, along with a sign outside that read, "Poisonous gas being emitted. Caution."
"It's easy, and everyone can do it," said Yasuaki Shimizu, director of Lifelink, a Tokyo-based group specializing in halting suicides. "Also, there is a lot of information teaching people how to do it on the Internet."
Police say they have not tallied the number of detergent-related suicides, but media reports suggest that it has reached about 30 this year, including several cases in which others were also sickened.
Japan's government has long battled to contain the country's alarmingly high suicide rate. A total of 32,155 people killed themselves in 2006, giving the country the ninth highest rate in the world, according to the government.

A gallery of outdoor dentists and hairdressers in India and China.
This is one of those things you see pretty much every single day on any street in India (and China), but those of you in the Western Hemisphere would find this greatly amusing and curious.
A gallery of a Japanese penis worshipping festival, or "WTF JAPAN?!"
And finally, a gallery showcasing the rich, middle class and poor in China. I have to say that this would tranfer fairly well for India too.
Although to be honest, what I'd really like to know is what these particular people do for a living.
The cliche is that India and China are full of poor people who live like many of the people in these pictures. But on the other hand, there are people who are educated, English speaking, computer literate, and live relatively comfortable lives - earn a salary comparable to American minimum wage, except their cost of living is a fraction of American cost of living (like me, for example).
So I'd love to see a mention of these peoples' incomes and education and jobs to set the record straight. In my neighborhood in South Delhi for example there's an office with a Bentley Continental GT regularly parked outside. My neighbourhood alone is home to three Ferrari owners, one Lamborghini Gallardo owner, and at least three Porsche owners - and it's not even what we'd call the "really rich" part of town.
India and China aren't full of poor people. It's just the divide between the rich and the poor is so much greater than it is in any developed country that the average alien might not be able to even comprehend it.

Where to start.
Backstory: Okay, first of all, in case you somehow hadn't heard, Japan was in the news recently when after several incidents of unwanted babies being abandoned in public places, a controversial anonymous "baby drop box" was introduced at some hospitals. This way at least the babies would at least be taken care of quickly (as opposed to babies being dumped in public parks and whatnot).
