Damn... I had ASCII Jesus in a Santa Hat all ready and everything...
_53_53 on December 23rd, 2005 02:51 pm (UTC)
for christmas i want a beautifully painted, lovingly rendered image of a nativity scene with a little santa claus in the manger.

or on the cross dying for the sins of mankind, that would be good too.

I have a neighbor with a giant, red glowing, highly inappropriate looking cross in his front yard. And another neighbor with a plastic glowing nativity scene and a missing baby Jesus. I have to stop myself from knocking on his door and asking him if he's found Jesus, yet... I should take pictures...

Or, I could send you this: http://www.ie.lspace.org/art/kidby/xmshgftr.jpg

sometimes people don't put the baby Jesus out until December 25th, since he's supposedly 'not here yet" until then. but the cross? no idea...maybe he's trying to convey that the birth is not the end of the story? I dunno.

i'd love to put up a nativity scene with santa claus in the manger, or santa on the cross, but then no one here would get it.

christmas in new delhi is some inexplicable holiday and an excuse to not go to work and get drunk. which is just as well.

wait a second...
not to be pissy, but for someone who defends christian belief tooth and nail, you sure do have a poor attitude towards the birth of Christ.

Re: wait a second...
you mean the birth of santa claus.

Re: wait a second...
and relax, i've gone back to being a heathen.
rosasmom: hahahahaha!rosasmom on December 23rd, 2005 03:01 pm (UTC)
Re: wait a second...
yeah, yeah. :-P
we're ALL heathens, I think. That's the whole point, isn't it? Jesus came for us ALL. but truth be told, I don't think ANYone in the whole world has it right. But we all do the best we can with what we THINK we know. I truly believe God is pleased with us when we just TRY. we won't truly KNOW until we meet him face to face.
the only thing I think is really a sin is hate, and things done out of hate. Doing things with good intentions and love, even if they're wrong, is not a sin.

Re: wait a second...
i'm thinking of that famous scene in south park: bigger, longer and uncut, where kenny dies and goes to hell. there's an orientation session there for the recently damned, and a spokesperson (or satan, i forget which) comes up the stage to the microphone, and everyone's like, "hey, what's up, i shoudn't be here, there's some mistake, i've been a devout christian / jew / muslim / etc." and the guy at the mic goes, "yeah, you were all wrong, the ones who had it right were the mormons, yes," and everyone in the crowd goes "aww, man, dammit, etc."

late and wrong...
oh. well, when i even HAD TV, I only managed to stomach about 2 minutes of southpark. i HATE that show. HATE.

Re: wait a second...
well, no, not really that. i've decided to chill out a little also. rather than swing from one extreme to the other, sit in the middle you know.

i'm kind of like God's C average student :-P
irishfire81 on December 23rd, 2005 06:50 pm (UTC)
Re: wait a second...
Last time I checked, C average wasn't heathen. :P

I got all excited. Next time say something like, "Gee I suck at this christian thing" instead of "woah, I'm a heathen now" and I won't have the huge let-down later.

Re: oh yeah...
i heard it was actually much earlier, like september (hence the shepherds being out with their sheep and whatnot) but who knows.

point is that christmas has very little to do with jesus. i mean it always did but even less nowdays.
rosasmomrosasmom on December 24th, 2005 02:00 pm (UTC)
Re: oh yeah...
ok. it is true that christmas has become very commercialized. but it is what YOU make it. If it's not a commercial in YOUR heart, that is what matters.

Long ago, the time of christ's birth was actually celebrated as just that. I think it was even celebrated some other day. (and you should know as someone that lives in another country that the middle eastern climate is DIFFERENT than the rest of the world for one, and two, it was 2000 years ago. Climates CHANGE. It's possible that it was warm in December 2000 years ago in Bethlehem. but anyways.)
Then, if I am not mistaken, the Church decided to have it around the time of the solstice, since they liked the idea of celebrating "the light of the world" at the darkest time of the year.
But it makes no nevermind to me what day christmas is, as long as I know in MY heart what Christmas is supposed to mean to me. And it makes no nevermind to me that most of "christmas" symbols come from paganism. To me, it just goes to show that religions can and do spill into one another. I think it is NEAT how the evergreen symbolizes regenerating life in paganism, and everlasting life in christianity. So all the fuss and fighting about who stole from who, and what means what, and all that crap is just SILLY.

i give gifts because it makes me feel good to do so. They're never expensive. Just a token to show I'm thinking of people during this special time. The joy that lights up on my loved ones' faces is what makes it feel so good. But besides that, i give random gifts all year, if I see something I think someone would like, and can afford it.
