I've never been able to put my finger on it myself until I read this article.

saying appalling things, or convicted by a court, can hold legitimate hope of a comeback—unthinkable in the West.

Um, not so much any more. Think Sara Palin and Marion Barry. The politicians are now able to recover and spin things to appeal to very confused people. It has become an art form in the US. OTOH, I don't think for a second that it compares with what the author is talking about.

Thanks for the heads up - I shared it on FB with the other godless heathens on my fl.

Well, it's on a much more blatant, ridiculous, overt level here than anything you've seen Stateside, and yet they get away with it. A big enough scandal for an American politician can sink his career; over here, it seems no scandal can get big enough or outrageous enough to do any damage. I'd post links to prove my point but I just ate :/

My congressman was caught choking and beating his mistress. He nearly won re-election. Of course, I live among idiots who would vote for a Republican Balrog over a Democrat with a visible halo.

Honestly, I don't doubt you for a second. Here it depends on the spin and the party. What I'm getting from you is that there it just doesn't matter at all.
