RIP George Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)
Don't give your money to the church. They should be giving their money to you.
- "Interview With Jesus", A Place for My Stuff (1981)

Here's another question I have. How come when it's us, it's an abortion, and when it's a chicken, it's an omelette? Are we so much better than chickens all of a sudden? When did this happen, that we passed chickens in goodness? Name 6 ways we're better than chickens.
- "Abortion", Back in Town (1996)

"Happens to be." "He happens to be black." Like it's a fucking accident, you know. He happens to be black? Yes, he happens to be black. Ah, yes, yes, yes. He had two black parents? Oh, yes, that's right, two black parents. And they fucked? Oh, indeed they did. So where does the surprise part come in? I would think it would be more unusual if he just "happened" to be Scandinavian.
- "Minority Language", You Are All Diseased (1999)

Religion has actually conviced people that there's an invisible man. Living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day of your life. And he has a list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any, any, of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and ash and torture where he will send you to suffer and burn and scream and cry forever and ever until the end of time. ... But he loves you.
- "There Is No God", You Are All Diseased (1999)

Here's a bumper sticker I'd like to see: "We are the proud parents of a child whose self esteem is sufficient that he doesnt need us promoting his minor scholastic achievements on the back of our car."
- "Parents of Honor Students", Complaints and Grievances (2001)

Call me ignorant, but where the hell in the bible does it actually talk about hell [the place]??

I never recalled EVER reading about this subterranean mythical place which was predominantly red and hot.

Well, the bible mentions a place of "weeping and gnashing of teeth." maybe not "hell" in that literal word, but it's clear that there will be some place with endless fire, weeping, agony, etc. and it will be eternal separation from God and Heaven. There's Jesus talking about the rich man and Lazarus; There's the parable of the sheep and the goats and talk of a harvest where God will separate His holy people from the non-holy; I mean there's good reason to believe there was some kind of hell in mind.

What I find contentious / dubious far more than whether the bible contends that hell is real, is exactly WHY people will go to hell. All over the bible it's hinted that you "won't get into heaven" per se for being a bad person, which kind of doesn't really gel with the idea that the only reason you don't go to heaven (and i guess that means go to hell) is not believing in Christ as your Lord and Saviour etc. I mean it says forgiveness of sins, but then there are sins that are supposedly "unforgivable" too, which is where things get really sticky depending on who you talk to.

My point is, most people can agree that the Bible is trying to say that not everyone goes to heaven when they die. It's where they go if they can't be let into heaven that's contentious and open to endless argument. Catholics believe in pergatory, of which there's even less Bibliical evidence; some Chritsians go for the "once saved / baptized, always saved and going to heaven no matter what", and some say it's possible to lose your faith and be "spit out of God's mouth".

Or at least that's as far as I understand it....

My answer of course coming from someone who approached 'religion' first off on the level of someone who was very seated in the 'what is real/what is un-real' awareness...

It just never caught on for me.

That being said, I was on the way to doing the whole buddhist nun thing but then I decided that one really doesn't have to buy the whole story to just live with the whole mentality/being that most religions, at their core, espouse.

The 'vibe' of most religion is actually fairly down-to-earth and 'respectable' - It's just the way they package it and construct all the junk around the principles that really disagrees with me (:
