At over three times the size of the Knock Nevis supertanker, the proposed world's biggest ship wasn't to be a ship as such, but rather a floating city of over 100,000 residents with its own offices, economy, hospitals, subways, traffic, malls, docks and a full airport on top designed to support take offs and landings of the largest commercial aircraft.

Construction on what easily would have been the biggest ship in the world was slated to begin around 2001, but nothing ever happened. The official website hasn't been updated since 2005.

Reminds me of all the hype after the movie Titanic came out, there were rumors all over the net that someone was going to build a new Titanic in time for the 100th anniversary of the original ship. It was funny that so many people believed the rumors, but I never thought anybody would actually finance such a thing.

Comes 2008, and we now have the above. Ten times the size of the Titanic, with a proposed population 45 times that of the Big T. Can you say "world's worst maritime disaster waiting to happen"? It's still vaporware, of course; I just can't imagine anybody seriously proposing it and, even more preposterous, expecting someone to fund it.

Vaporware is an excellent term for it. Thanks to the threat of terrorism, fears of climate change (whether it exists or not), fears of recession (whether they're valid or not), there's no way this project is getting off the ground anytime within the next decade at best.

Still, some pretty amazing ideas in there if you read through the article.
