I don't know which version of Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie by Joanna Newsom is better. They're both fucking flooring. I am overwhelmed by her delivery, her lyrics; the phrasing of all the music is just so slow and deliberate in the one off of Milk-Eyed Mender and the version on the Ys Street Band EP is the boldest thing she's ever recorded in my opinion. They both put the listener in his or her respective place. There's a sense in both songs that Joanna is real and nothing more - the microphone pops and hisses with the instruments and her voice being placed too close - it is this, well, error that allows the listener to really sit within the song.|
She sounds so out there sometimes, but sometimes I'm unable to find anything more accessible on the inside.
