HeroDex - Trading Card MMO

Hi all, I think most people know but this is what I've been working on for the last few years:

*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***

29th October 2012 - London, England: Zero Separation Ltd has just opened the first sections of the website and released the first full Trailer for their upcoming Trading Card MMO: HeroDex.

The Trailer is available on the Zero Separation YouTube stream at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkpvHtiMHIM
The website is available at: http://www.herodex.net
Press information including screenshots and other artwork for Zero Separation and HeroDex can be found at: http://www.herodex.net/press/sheet.php?p=herodex
The release date for the game has yet to be determined, however an invitation-only Beta will be announced soon. The game will initially be available on Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms.

HeroDex features online solo play versus computer opponents along with competitive and co-operative play against or alongside other players. This brand new Virtual Trading Card Game offers quick-paced matches that can be completed in only a few minutes. The gameplay, with a unique feats-based advancement system and a flexible deck building system, will keep people coming back for more.

Matches have been described as a cross between Poker and Rock-Paper-Scissors (Roshambo) with bluffing and anticipating your opponent's next move forming a large part of the strategy. All moves are made at the same time with each round finishing once everyone has made their move or the time limit is reached - so even large matches proceed quickly. The suspense of waiting to see what cards your opponent will reveal can become intense and outsmarting them very satisfying.

Players start with a free "Fighter" hero and starting deck. Further cards can be acquired in game or purchased from the store; as can a range of different Heroes, each with their own deck. A tutorial introduces new players to the game and allows the first new cards to be added to your deck as you progress.

Play is free, with no subscription or credit card details required and no hidden fees. Buy packs of cards from the store or earn cards in game and once you have them you will never be charged to use them.

Zero Separation is an independent games developer based near London, England.

Accidental Damage!

You know those Extended Warranties shops always try and charge you ridiculous amounts for?

Well I did the math ages ago and realised they are virtually never worthwhile. However twice I have bought them - both times because it included accidental damage and was on something I considered reasonably likely to get damaged!

My laptop got water spilled on it within a few days of purchase, and then a puppy chewed through the power cable 9 months after that...so I got repairs and replacement power cable on that warranty!

Then a few weeks ago I bought a new camera, I figured since I'm going to be taking it out and about and photographing LRPers etc it would be worth buying the warranty.

3 weeks later the screen is broken (I still have no idea how, it was in my back pocket but I keep my phone there all the time!) and I have a shiny new camera! The shop were pretty good as well, I took in the receipt and old camera and they just gave me a brand new one in its box!

I bought a case for it this time as well to try and prevent it happening again.

So it seems that buying accidental damage cover on things seems to ensure they get broken, but at least it doesn't cost me any money!

The funny thing is I nearly didn't buy it this time, but the shop discounted it down to about £10 or £15 pounds (I forget which) so I took it. Good thing too...

Slow but steady progress

I've applied for a trademark for my project. Just got word that's it's through the first stage and although there is one possible prior it is different enough that hopefully it won't come to anything.

I've also got the domain name already so hopefully will be able to switch on the website once the trademark is approved.

The project itself is behind where I wanted to be but still making progress. I'm hoping to start a closed invitation-only alpha in the next month or two and then gradually build out from there.

Merry/Happy Festival of choice

Hi all. I'm about to leave to pick up my parents from the airport (they spent Christmas in Australia!) but thought Livejournal was overdue an update.

My project has been continueing apace with steady progress on all fronts. I've got a functional playtest and soak test client working and most of the main server infrastructure and website. If all goes to plan the website will go online in March although the game itself will only be in closed Alpha testing at that point. The main big thing that needs doing at the moment is tidying everything up and a serious overhaul on the graphical side of things. I need to make the client pretty and easy to use and shiney and suchlike...

I spent Christmas with Clare and Leon at our house and Clare's mum hosted Christmas dinner at her house again. (Nummy!) We had snow before and now (after) Christmas but not on the day itself. Probably just as well though as it made travel easier and safer. Just before Christmas we went to a party hosted by my mum at my brother's and saw a lot of my familly there so that was nice.

I'm sat here looking at live flight arrival time information from heathrow and at the snow falling outside (it's a proper snowfall as well, big flakes and lots of them) and debating how much extra travel time the snow will cause compared to how long it will take my parents to get through baggage claim and customs!

Still here!

Hello. Remember me?

I've been busy busy busy so not much time for posting, I am still reading though!

Life is generally going pretty well, making excellent work on my little project and yesterday I had a player with 5 heroes active all running around Hastin City successfully. Next job is getting it so they can actually fight duels with each other and then getting a basic market and trading in place and it is actually ready for some very early alpha testing.

The look&feel is crap at the moment but that is expected as I'm concentrating on the server and game mechanics. I'm planning to spend quite a while polishing the GUI once everything is working.

Going to the Gathering this weekend (leaving today in fact) which should be fun. I'll be out grabbing some more photos as well while I'm there so get more raw material to work with. I'm still a Staff Ref and Clare is Head of Department for make up and costume!

I've only been making it to the gymn once a week but once Leon is back in school I should be able to pick that up a bit.

Clare's work has cut her hours, which is good for spending more time together but bad for money. Will have to see how that works out.

Talking about money - I just got word that my tenant has given his notice and is moving out near the end of Sept. Anyone want to rent a house in Newbury? :)

Exhausting weekend...

I had a good weekend, but I'm now seriously knackered!

I was working as a staff ref again for live role playing (The Grand Edrejan Fayre this time) and I think every muscle is feeling it today. I'm getting old!

High points:

  • Clare got a promotion (more details later once it's public knowledge).

  • My ref appraisal went well - they are basically happy with what I'm doing although I need to work on a few things.

  • I started getting rated proficient in stealth reffing, just need to do a couple more for practice

  • I'm now rated expert in periphery and plot which means once I get the stealth reffing rating I can run out pretty much any encounter.

  • I got a load of really good photos for my project, and a lot of people interested in modelling for more

  • Dain (my character for those who don't know) still kicks ass

Low points:

  • Having a serious first aid incident on an encounter I was reffing. (LT ambulance, then external ambulance and guy shipped off to hospital). I ended up as point on the whole thing although the guy was ok in the end and back on site the next day.

  • Being absolutely knackered. The heat was terrible and I had a 12 hour shift one day which didn't help either.

Yeaarhghfdgjhskdfhsgdasa point:

  • Big bad wandering around doing nasty things to people transports out to a wraith tainted unliving-infested circle - while still having 7 players in the circle with her. The other players trace the transport and send in a rescue party that lands 90 seconds later. Having to keep track of what everyone was doing, where they were landing and resolve the whole situation was a bit of a head fuck but I got it done in the end. None of the player's characters died but several were really close and I think they got a good sense of it being a skin of their teeth rescue - so it all worked out well in the end.

Free swimming

The local swimming pool just signed up to the kids swim for free scheme - and as a member of the Gymn I get free access to the pool already...so as a result we can both swim for free.

I forsee lots of water in our future :)

LARPEXILES ROCKS!

A big box of shoes just arrived for Clare. She's so happy she's bouncing around the house, already tried them all on (they all fit perfectly except one pair) and is impatient to go to work tomorrow so she can wear some of her new shoes!

So a public thanks to Dawn for all the shoes she sent to Clare :D

FUCK

Just called the lettings agent. Not only has he still not signed the contract but he's now emailed to say they are doing lots of redundancies at his work and so he can't sign. No-one is even sure what happens about the money he's paid so far...although as far as I'm concerned it can go into covering the rent until I find an alternate tenant, assuming I can at this time of year.

I've offered a compromise with a 2 month minimum period to get us past Christmas and let him see if he is redundant or not but I fucking knew some shit like this was going to happen.

Today has been a Good Day

Finished at work...unless something comes up over the next week they need to call me in for then I'm finished :) I now live in Watford!

Natwest finally gave in - they wrote to Clare saying they will pay her back all her money and even some of the interest we claimed!

The NHS phoned Clare to say it looked like they wouldn't be able to do her operation on January - so they were booking her into a private hospital to do it instead!

The case of the disappearing tenant...

It appears the curse on my house is strong enough to make people completely disappear...

Friday afternoon - tenant supposed to collect keys and sign contract.
Friday morning - tenant calls to say he is ill and will have to come in on monday to do it.
Monday - no sign of tenant, no phone calls, not answering his phone.
Tuesday - still no sign or calls. Still no answer on phone. His work can't get hold of him either...

Naturally he waits until after I've given in my notice at work to pull this disappearing act!

Gah.

Moved out

I'm knackered and my back really hurts but it's done.

House is empty and clean and tidy.

The last of my stuff is piled into my Car.

Insurance is sorted, phone and internet cancelled. (The lettings agency are supposed to sort all the other bills).

Just another 2 and a bit weeks of work and then I'm free.

Updating

Clare and Leon came back to my house with me this weekend and we cleaned and tidied the house, then Tim Smith came with his pickup and took a load of stuff to the tip and/or into storage. Clare was a star doing lots of cleaning and repainting and suchlike. We are just about managing to fit all my stuff and all her stuff into her house although it's very much a struggle.

End result: virtually empty house - just need to do a bit of plumbing DIY and it is ready for Thursday...

Which is the day my tenants move in.

...although things can still go horribly wrong between now and then. (See - I'm an optimist!)

Gah, need to cancel everything in sight too, phone, internet, etc, etc ... a few evenings on the telephone methinks :s

phoenix_blaze is kindly letting me crash at hers until I've finished working my notice period as she lives in Basingstoke.

Still a few days for everything to go horribly wrong...

References on my new prospective tenants finally came back.

Handed my notice in at work.

They are moving in on Thursday.

VICTORY!

I had my court case this morning about the car accident 18 months ago.

Apparantly I was "an impressive and credible witness" and the defendants statement was "a work of fiction". The judge really said both those things!

The case was awarded entirely in my favour despite the defence trying to wriggle for contributory neglicence at the end. Finally after 18 months it's all resolved - I just need to wait for my money to arrive and possibly chase the insurance company about some they owe me now.

Stuffs

I bought plants and put them in the garden.

Thinking about adding a mirror too.

I may not be able to make the garden bigger, but maybe I can make it look bigger to idiots.

The Farce Continues

They mounted a defence - according to my solicitor it is a pretty pathetic one but it still means we now need to go to trial.

And it could take 5 or 6 months to get it booked into court due to the waiting list.

I mean, FFS. This system is all fucked up. He's lying, wriggling, pulling a false witness out of his arse and generally cheating and delaying this as long as possible. And the insurance companies seem to be happy just to go along with him as he strings it out further and further.

By the time it gets resolved it's going to be over 18 fucking months since the idiot decided to try and pull a u-turn in front of me. A year and a half for what would have been an open and shut case if any of the monkeys at his insurance company had bothered to use their brain instead of pissing money and time away.

The worst thing is he will get no comeuppance at all for all this. His insurance company will foot the bill anyway so every month it takes is one month he has an 'unresolved' instead of a 'fault' claim, still has his no claims bonus, etc. He's not gonna get his excess back but then he wasn't going to get that anyway. Proving perjury is going to be really hard when he can just claim to have 'misremembered'.

It's just RIDICULOUS!

I wasn't even annoyed at the time. Accidents happen, you just need to sort them out and deal with them. Now I'm fucking steaming though as this idiot just keeps wriggling trying to avoid taking responsibility for his fuck ups and putting me, my witness, my solicitor, and basically everyone else through loads of hassle.

A time of change

It seems to be a time of change for quite a few people on my friends list at the moment (myself included)!

The best of luck to everyone in your new endeavourers.

Now for the bored amongst you - some quotes. Who can tell me where they are from? (If you google own up!)

1: First a serious and more obscure one
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

2: And then some light relief
"No need, little lady, your tears of gratitude are enough for me. You see, I was once a bad-ass vampire, but love and a pesky curse defanged me. Now I'm just a big, fluffy puppy with bad teeth. No, not the hair! Never the hair!"

3: Another funny one
"How can I save anyone? Okay, I look ridiculous, I am wearing clothes from the ex boyfriends pile, I have hair in strange places and I have a PENIS! This is so not funny!"

4: And an appropriate one to end on
"Change. Change. Change. Change... Change. Change. Chaaange. When you say words a lot they don't mean anything. Or maybe they don't mean anything anyway, and we just think they do."

Hatching but on life support

Had quite a few viewings over the weekend and one last night that went very well.

They called today to say that they really like the house and will be making an offer BUT they haven't sold their house yet so they can't buy until they do.

The good news is that it is a couple moving in together and they only need one of their two houses to sell so that they can afford to buy, but I'm still not going to be holding my breath!
